NOTICE. 
 
 The Board of Directors beg' to announce that the Fifth of 
 the Series of Rejjmis, containing Articles on the OuUivaiion of 
 Fruits, Flowers, Vegetables, Sfc, suitable to this climate, will be 
 issued at as early a date as possible. These Rejmrts contain a 
 large amount of valuable information, of the greatest use to all 
 who are in any way interested in matters pertaining to Gardening 
 and Horticulture, but especially to those resident in this Province. 
 The want of reliable information on these subjects has been long 
 felt, and very gratifying evidences of the appreciation of the 
 Society^ s efforts in this direction are being constantly received. 
 
 THE LIBRARY OF THE SOCIETY 
 
 Now contains a number of Books and Reports of Sister Societies 
 in Great Britain, the United States and Canada; and having 
 arranged with the Natural History Society for the use of a Room 
 in their Building, mi the corner of University and Cathcart Streets, 
 the same will be 
 
 OPEN TO THE MEMBERS OF THE SOCIETY 
 
 ON 
 
 Tuesday and Friday Evenings of each Week, 
 
 FROM 7.30 TO 9.30 P.M. 
 
 Some of the Books will mdy be permitted to be used as books of 
 reference, but others will be Loaned the Members, subject to the 
 Rules of the Association. Further contributions of Books are 
 respectfully invited from all persons interested in the objects of 
 the Society. 
 
 All Subscribers of $2 Annually will, in addition to their Tickets, be entitled to a 
 
 copjr of the "Illustrated Agricultural Journal," published Monthly ; also to 
 
 one copy of the Annual Report of the Society, published Yearly.

 1. All specimens placed in competition for premiums must be bona 
 fide GROWN BV THB COMPETITOR OR EMPLOYER; and, if proved not to 
 be such, the competitor to be disqualified for receiving any premium 
 whatever at the Exhibition. 
 
 2. All plants, flowers, fruits and vegetables must be carefully 
 labeled with their proper names. 
 
 3. All articles to be exhibited for premiums must be placed on 
 the stands by twelve o'clock, noon. This rule tvill be strictly adJiered 
 
 4. All articles exhibited shall remain in the Building until the 
 close of the Exhibition, when they will be delivered to the contri- 
 butors, unless otherwise directed. 
 
 6. The Judges shall have the dis^-etionary power of withholding 
 premiums, if, in their opinion, the articles exhibited do not merit 
 them. 
 
 6. In awarding premiums on plants in pots, special reference 
 will be had to tha beauty o^the specimens, profusion of bloom 
 and evidence of superior cultivation. 
 
 7. Dissimilar shall in every instance bo held to ,nean distinct 
 varieties or species of any plant. 
 
 8. Gratuities may be awarded by the Judges for any new or rare 
 fruit, flowers, plants or other objects of particular interest, and for 
 which no special premium has been offered. 
 
 9. Parties will not be allowed to compete for more than one priee 
 in the same section, and no article which has already been awarded 
 a prize will be entitled to another. 
 
 10. No individual, except the Judges, will be allowed to touch or 
 handle any fruit, flower, or other article exhibited.

 11. The dfcision of tho Judgefl, ae regards the premiumB, must 
 be coDsidered i\na]. 
 
 12. The Judges Hhall not be competitors in that clasB for which 
 they are to awaid premiums. 
 
 13. While the Judges are making their awards no person shall 
 be present except parties not in any way interested, who must 
 be appointed by the Directors. 
 
 14. Any deviation, more or less, from the exact quantities or 
 numbers specified in the schedule, will disqualify a competitor. 
 
 15. All Exhibitors in the classes for bouquets must have them 
 «f such a size that they can be shown in the vases provided by the 
 Society. No other vases will be permitted to be used. 
 
 16. Pot plants must have been grown in pots at least two months 
 previous to the Exhibition, and have been also the property of the 
 Exhibitor for a similar period. If proved not to be such they will 
 be disqualified. 
 
 17. In order to allot the space required in each section, all entriei 
 must be made in writing, arid subscriptions paid not later than the 
 Thursday previous to the opening of the Eihibion,_after which 
 date no entries will be received. 
 
 18. The Society will not be responsible for damage done to plants, 
 during or after Exhibitions, but all ordinary care will be taken of 
 them. 
 
 19. Any person residing in the Province of Quebec may become* 
 member of the Society on payment of an annual membership fee of 
 two dollars, for which payment he will receive a ticket of admission 
 to the Exhibition for his own use, and four single admission tickets. 
 Also a copy of any reports published by the Society, and will be 
 permitted the use of any of the books of reference in the Society's 
 library. 
 
 20. Any person residing outsit e the Island of Montreal, but in 
 the Province of Quebec, will be pormitted to compete for any of the 
 prizes offered by the Society, on payment of an entrance fee of one 
 dollar. A ticket of admission to the Exhibition, for his own use, 
 will be furnished free ; also, copy of Fruit Report arid Journal, 
 
tl. The Secretai-y shall not bo obliged to r«!celvo any entries not 
 made In writing, blank fornis for which will be furnished on appli- 
 cation to the Secretary. Parties living at a dintance may make 
 their entries by mail. 
 
 22. Cards corresponding with the entries will be furnished the 
 exhibitors, who alone will be responsible for the placing of them, and 
 are requested tu satisfy then selves that the cards correctly describe 
 the objects exhibited. The Society cannot bo responsible fer any 
 mistake arising from the non-observance of this or any other rule. 
 
 23. A Committee will be appointed by the Society to assist in 
 naming fiuit about which Exhibitors may be doubtful, but the 
 Sociery do not assume any responsibility in the matter, 
 
 34. The Society will, under no circumstances, pay cartage on 
 plants sent for competition. Cartage, however, may be paid if 
 deemed advisable on plants sent for Exhibition only. 
 
 24. Prize Lists and all other information may bo obtained by 
 applying to the Secretary , and all persons interested in Horticultwro 
 are invited to contribute articles for exhibition.

Special Notice to Intending Exhibitors. 
 
 All entries to be made in writing, and all suhscriptions paid not later 
 than the Thursday previous to the Exhibition^ after which date the Entry 
 Jiork will be closed. 
 
 Parties living at a distance will please send their entries to the Secre- 
 tary, accompanied by their subscription («ee rules 17 and 18) by mail, on 
 or be/ore the above date. 
 
 Competitors in the classes for Collections of Plants or Friits will 
 please state, as neatly as possible, the amount of space they will require 
 in each section, on a table 3^ feet wide. 
 
 Exhibitors will have the privilege of selling any articles exhibited, at 
 auction, or by private sale, at the close of the Exhibition, paying the 
 Society a commission of 10 per cent., which will include the Auctioneer's 
 fee on all articles sold.
