It is worthy of note that some of the greatest monuments of engineeiing skill on the continent are to be found along the line of the Grand Trunk Railway ; for example — the Niagara Falls Suspen- sion Bridge, the International Bridge at Buffalo, the Victoria Tubular Bridge at Montreal, and the St. Clair Tunnel, which, passing under the St. Clair River between Sarniaand Port Huron, furnishes unbroken rail communication between the Province of Ontario and the State of Michigan, and is the longest submarine tunnel in the world (length of tunnel 6,026 feet — length of tunnel and approaches 11,553 feet— cost, about $2,700,000). Its agencies in all the principal cities are supplied with a large variety of tourist tickets, and will furnish full information as to routes, fares, connections, time tables, &c. Visitors to the World's Fair should bear the above in mind when purchasing their tickets, and see that they read over the Grand Trunk Rail- way, via Detroit or the great St. Clair Tunnel. D. O. It was founded in 1642, and has now a population, exclusive of the suburbs, of 216,000. It is the head of the ocean navigation, although 720 miles from the Atlantic, and is the headquarters of the great Canadian Railways. It has factories and works of almost every kind, and three-quarters of the total imports of Canada come to Montreal. It is called the " City of Churches " from the number of sacred buildings. Those most worthy of the notice of visitors are Notre Dame, on the Place d'Armes; the English Cathedral and St. James Methodist Church, on St, Catherine Street; the Jesuits' Church, on Bleury Street ; and St. Peter's Cathedral, on Dominion Square. Besides the numerous churches, there are many other fine public buildings, among which are the New Board of Trade Building, on St. Sacrament Street; the Y. M. C. A. Building, on Dominion Square; McGill College, with its fine buildings; the City Hall; the Art Gallery; the Depots of the Grand Trunk and Canadian Pacific Railways; the Bank of Montreal. Although the population of Montreal is largely French, yet the Sons of England have a good hold ; no less than nine lodges being in existence, lists of whose officers will be found on othej; pages of this little book. /: f -r-v' REFRESHMENT ROOMS FOB MDIES AND GEHTLEfHEjl, 1833 Notre Dame Street » ^ •» * CITY CAFE CO., 2236 St Catherine St w ^-^•^-«- JAUES WHARTON, Proprietor. 5 ? > , t •» VtJ> f.
