FORDYCE AND CONNEXIONS 1884 4-r en ( ^ -( p: The Compiler to the Reader, Early in life a strong liking took hold of my mind, for Family History. With investigations in this line any spare time was occupied : copious extra<5ls made from books to which I had access, parish registers ex- amined for births, marriages, and deaths ; and copies taken of inscriptions on the tomb-stones within reach. Coming to Canada when only 19 years old, I found little if any opportunity, for pursuing such studies. I might now and then look over extradls made in these early days, and so keep the liking from dying out en- tirely ; — but, till the opportunity firose, of reproduc- ing b\ printed copy, information I had gathered, the thought of preparing such a Record* as this, never se- riously presented itself. When it did and nothing ap- peared to prevent the attempt being made, it became necessary to determine what form would be likely to combine most readily, simpicity ofarrangement with convenience in tracing relationships. 34610 Explanatory. An Alphabetical arrangement, sucli as a Dire6lory or Dictionary presents, seemed to be most suitable — accompanied bytabularlistsfittedtogive a particular view of one or another branch orofishoot : the blood- relations, as they are called, not occupying the whole 'record*, to the exclusion of such as were conne(5lions of the family, simply by marryingsons, being married to daughters, or in some such way. The plan likewise contemplated the introdudiion, when it could be got, of the parents and grandparents of such conne6lions. On this plan the epitome now completed has been prepared ;and the same general plan will be observed in the larger 'record', which will be proceeded with, as speed i.y as possible : the chief difference between the two lying in the opportunity aflbrded by the latter for particulars of interest about one or another, which the nature of this small work could not admit of ; and for noticing by means of an Appendix, individuals or famil'es nearly related to some in the 'record* and yet excluded by the necessary limitation of the plan. Where a point arose involving doubt, this has been indicated by an interrogation mark : these marks are few however, and the nature of the doubt will be ex- Explanatory. plained in the fuller record. On minor discrepancies, owing to communications reaching me from different sources on one point, I had to use my own judgment. I have not been able to procure information, about the descendants of Dr George French, about those of Provost David Steuart & Anne Fordyce — or those of Alex. Dingwall & Janet Abercrombie's daughters. I regret that, except in a fragmentary manner, the same is the case with the daughters of John Dingwall and Mary Lumsden. Information on these points, if supplied in time, may appear in the larger 'record*. In this EPITOME, the names of the parents of those who have a place in it, are given within brackets : in some cases the name onlv of one wasknovr '>rg:iven. Friends very kindly gave what information was in their power ; some have taken a very great amount of trouble, and have my sincere and hearty thanks. In making use of DrHew Scott's valuable work — 'Fasti Ecclesiae Scotticanae*, I trust that no error has crept into this record, as I have reason to believe that work is not wholly free from inaccuracies. If any are detected, informing me will be esteemed a favor. Fergus, Ontario, June 2 1884: A.D.F. /^ Additional Note. : I i A simple professional remark made many years since, in a work by Ralph Bigland Esq. Somerset Herald, "Observations on Marriages, Baptisms, and Burials; as preserved in the Parochial Registers, A.D. 1764:" was the means of inducing me, to note down various scraps of information, wiiich have been found useful in tlie preparation of this 'Record.' The remark itself, remains as fresh in my memory after halfa century — as the day on which I first came across it. It is this ;— " It is of importance to every family , --not excepting the meanest, to pay some regard to their pedigrees: and consequently, every circumstance, whether of a public or private nature, —which tends to preserve or elucidate Genealogical History, shouiu be attended to, with the most religious care." Meanness (of origin) according to the acceptation of the term in the above extract, — is well known to be quite compatible with the highest species o{ nobility^ that of cliaradter. This little M ecord* of relatives and connexions, — many of them belonging to other days, contains the names of not a few , who might have been reckoned mean in respe<5l of social standing, but who were truly the honorable of the earth : — descent from whom isregarded with justifiable pride by those who rightly estimate such distuK^iions.
