 A. T. R, No. 261 J.

 The attention of tn tting-horse breeders is called to Chicago
 Volunteer, who is a solid bay in color i6 hands high, and of
 great muscular trotting powers.

 He combines the blood of Volunteer, the best speed-pro-
 ducing son of Rysdyk's Hambletonii^n, with that of (iifford
 Morgan, the best representative of the Morgan family. '1 he
 purity of the trotting gait or the Morgans has never been ques-
 tioned, while perlormance andbiotory are once more bringing
 them prominently before public notice.

 Goldsmith's Volunteer, the sire of Chicago Volunteer, is the
 sire of St. Julien, 2:ft^ ; Closter, 2:17 ; Alley, 2:19 ; IJodine,
 2:19^ ; Driver, 2:19)4 ; Amy, 2:2014' ; Huntress, 2:203^ ;
 Powers, 2:21 ; and fifteen others in 2:30.

 The New York Sportsman, of Feb. 20th, 1886, the leading
 turf journal, in an editorial on great trotting sires, says of Vol-
 unteer, sire of Chicago Volunteer ; " It stands then far beyond
 contradiction, that as a direct begetter of speed. Volunteer
 heads the Hst of great sires, living or dead. Not alone in pro-
 ducing speed does Volunteer rank with any stallion, but also in
 producing that rarer and more desirable product, racehorses.
 How true is the saying, ' There are many trotters, but few
 racehorses.' St. Julien, the fastest of his produce, was a rare
 campaigner, having 28 victories to his credit, and 74 heats in
 .^:3o and better; Gloster, 2:17, who was cut short by death in
 a career that promised to be the most brilliant of his day, has
 to his credit 18 races won, and 39 heats in 2:30 and better ;
 Alley, 2:19, has won 25 races, and 46 heats in 2:30 and better;
 TJodine. 2:10 1/. has a*? wins to his credit, and 66 heats in 2''l<^

and better; while Driver, the greatest campaigner of all, has
 won 56 contested races, and 162 heats in 2:30 and better. A
 brief resume shows that his five sons who have beaten 2:20
 have won one hundred and fifty four races and three hundred
 and eighty-seven heats in 2:30 and better. I'his is a showing
 that no other sire can approximate, and stamps Volunteer as
 one of the greatest, if not actually the greatest sire whose name
 has ever graced the jjagci of turf history."

 Dunton's Spirit of the Times, Chicago, the only paper in the
 \Vest devoted exclusively to the horse, says : " We have no
 hesitation in asking the breeders of Ontario to give this stallion
 (Chicago Volunteer) a fair trial. From his fine breeding and
 the uniform speed shown by his get here, he must prove a
 grand success.

 Chicago Volunteer is acknowledged as being one of the
 greatest of the Canadian trotting sires.

 He is the sire of Country Girl, 2:2414^ ; May H., 2:261^ ;
 Woodstock Volunteer, 2:52, as a three-year-old, and winner of
 tiie 1'hree-Year-0ld Colt Stake, at St. Catharines, Canada, in
 1884; Fusilier, foaled 1882, bay stallion, owned by Dr.
 Roome, Newbury, winner of Sweepstakes at Ridgetown last
 fall, can beat 2:50 at three year old, and is the handsomest
 young stallion in Canada. Dr. Roome writes : " Either of my
 3-year-old Chicago Volunteer colts can beat 2:50." He is also
 the sire of Paquita, winner of the Three-Year-Old Stake at
 Dresden, Ontario. Paquita can beat 2:50, and is one of the*
 finest gentleman's roadsters in Canada.

 His get are natural trotters, and command high prices. They
 have been sold as follows, viz. : Geo. Forbes' May B., $1700 ;
 Nesbitt's bay colt, $700 : John Sherren's Vaultress, $500 ; the
 Qua filly (22 mos. old), $350; Geo. Forbes' G. G. (3 years),
 $325 ; Jos. Nellis' black filly (2 years), $300, and Geo. John-
 son a 6-weeks'-old for $200.

 Terms — $25 to insure, payable when the mare proves to be
 in foal.
