 As every Assoeiation for the assistance and relief of our 
 fellow-creatures is conunendahle and good, it is hoped the 
 XoKTM HurnsH Sociktv of Halifax will he esteemed sue h hy 
 all who can(h-dly pursue the Rules of its Institution. 
 
 When people meet with misfortune, or fall uito distress in 
 •' pan of the world remote from the land of their nativity, they 
 naturally select iheir countrymen to reveal their situation to 
 them, and to (-laim their aid. 
 
 That they might have it hi their power to interpose with 
 eflectn, hehalf of such claimants, the natives of Scotland and 
 those ol Sc-otch parentage in the city of Halifax, agreed in the 
 year 1768, to form themselves into a charitable Society. 
 
 Tl^" good effects of their association have now been ex- 
 perienced for 125 years, and though the objects .^f their charity, 
 l-ke the contributors to it, have, according to their fundamental 
 principals, been North Britons only, and can, while their pre- 
 sent Constitution last.s, be ,10 other, yet there is nothing .so 
 narrow or ilhlKTal in their Institution as to indispo.se them, in 
 tbeir individual capacity, from acting up to the principles of 
 universal charity, and joining with the community at large, in 
 acts of .social or private beneficence.

 As the e.vistencc and usefulness of the Society depends 
 upon its ordinary nicmhers, what relates to them deserves the 
 lirst consideration.

 art- or were natives ; or, lastly, of those whose fiithers or grand-

 Perpetual members shall ronsist of those persons entitled

 Honorary memlters shall consist of those persons eligible

 office and avocations the Society shall think proper to exempt, 
 though resident, from the duty of ordinary attendance. In 
 either case they shall contribute to the funds of charity a sum 
 not less than six dollars. The admission and enrolment of
