Borthwick has taught in the VUlage of Beaver- ton from 1st October 1850 until this date. During that period I have been a frequent visitor of his School, and always found him assiduous and earnest in his vocation. The progress of his pupils has been moat satisfactory to all concerned, and highly creditable to him as a Teacher. As an individual, his conduct has been exemplary. From my own knowledge of Mr. Borthwick's high qualifications, his experience, and excellent conduct, I have no hesitation in recommend- ing him as an able and eflBcieLf Teacher. CHARLES ROBINSON, Town Reeve, Thorah. 8 XIV.— From Rev. HUGH BORTHWICK, A.M.,Princi- cipal of Ottawa Senior Grammar School. Newmarket (York Co.)) 0. W., February 7th, 1853. I hereby certify that Mr. J. D. Borthwick has taught in the Grammar School here for six months, and has given great satisfaction to Parents and Trustees. Owing to delicacy of health, I was obliged to give him some of the Classical and Mathematical Classes in the School to conduct, which he did to my entire satisfaction and the improvement of the pupils. I know he is thoroughly competent to teach all the branches of an English education, with the Classics and Mathematics required in a Country Grammar School. He is, besides, constantly improving himself by hard study. H. J. BORTHWICK, A.M., Master, Grammar School, Newmarket. DAVID CAW, Local Supl. 9 XVI.— From Rev. GEO. MURRAY, Oxford, C.W. These are to certify that on the 26th of November, 1854, I visited the ochool taught by Mr. John Borthwick, in Mount Pleasant, along with ♦wo of the Trustees and that I have much pleasure in stating that I was both highly entertained and gratified with the examinations of the seve- ral classes. Mr. B. has evidently great facility in adapting his instruc- iioB to the juvenile mind. The style of his teaching is minute and thor- QQgh. The pupils displayed great accuracy and proficiency in all the exercises of the school. I deem it unnecessary to particularize any i)raach, for the same care and diligence were apparent in the correctness and evidences with which the pupils answered the questions put in all tixQ branches taught in the school, and, upon thu whole, I consider Mr. V, Borthwick as a teacher of the first class, of much experience as a teacher, and, therefore, a valuable acquisition to the neighbourhood. GEORGE MURRAY, Member of the Board of Public Instruction for the County of Oxford. Mount Pleasant, 21st Feb., 1855. XVII.- -From Rev. ALEX. A. DRUMMOND, Superin tendent of Schools, Brantford, C.W. Brantford, Oct. 29th, 1855. i have frequently visited Mr. Borthwick's school during the 21 years he has taught in Mount Pleasant. I have carefully examined his pupils in. the various branches taught in schools, and feel myself at liberty to certify that Mr. B., in my estimation, is a first-class teacher. His own mind is well trained, — his acquaintance with the science of education Is up to the times, and it is his manifest desire to excel in his profession : hence his success as a teacher and the proficiency of his scholars. Besides, his moral character is unimpeachable, which gives him a posi- tion in the school-room favourable for influencing the children, and which, in the estimation of all who have enlightened views of education, •will make him to be highly appreciated, and secure for him their respect amd confidence.
