JOSEPH STREET, In this Exhibition Catalogue we would direct the attention of Manufacturers, Saw Mill proprietors, Iron Founders, Agricultural Implement makers and Machinists generally to the following des- cription of Barry, Smith & Go's. LEATHER BELTING FACTORY. OF the many industries that of late years have been - dded to the manufacturing world, there is none which occupy a i ore im- portant place among manufacturers of every description than the production of leather belting ; machinists, engineers, millwrights, cotton mill, woollen mill, saw mill, flour mill proprietors and manu- facturers in general finding this article one of the necessities of their several trades. Much skill is required by the workmen in the several departments and large experience in the selection of the materials which form the belting. Among those who, from long experience in this business, have attained an enviable position with the trade, is the firm of Messrs. Barry, Smith & Co., Nos. 594, 596 and 598 St. Joseph Street, Montreal. This house, which has , / r JJ / ADVERTISEMENTS. been established a number of years, hae become well known to the trade, and for the following reasons we would in this Exhibition Catalogue give it a still wider reputation. The leather of which the belting is composed is tanned in the most approved style, only the best pure bark tanned leather that is known in the market being employed, and is entirely free from acids or other injurious application which in inferior grades of leather affect the elasticity and durability of the belting. There are three things wherein lie the secret of good belting and these three must be combined. First, the leather must be made from steer hides and tanned only with the best pure bark. Second, nothing but the heart or solid part of the leather, or in technical phraseology, what is called the butt of the hide should be used, The shoulder and belly should be cut off as they a-e generally soft and spongy and make miserably poor belting. Third, the strips of leather that form the belting should be cut lengthways and not crossways of the hide, and then cemented and riveted with short Laps. The house ot Barry, Smith & Co., is the only one in Canada, that has made a specialty of turning out almost exclusively Short Lap Belting — combining with it all the other requisites herein mentioned. Another matter affecting the superiority, durability and finish of Messrs. Barry, Smith & Go's belting is that great care, practical skill and experience are exercised in every process, render- ing their work uniform in every respect. The factory is divided into several manufacturing departments where the leather is cleansed, scoured, etc., before it is put through the process of stuff- ing, stretching and drying : also the departments where it is cut, trimmed, guaged, cemented and rivetted. Every process is carried on with the aid of improved machinery. The arrangements, throughout the establishment are of the most complete order and it is the largest factory of the kind in the Dominion of Canada. The M'orkshop departments are under the supervision of an able man- ager, who has had a long extended experience in some of the best Belting Manufactories in the United States and Canada. Barry, Smith & Co's lace leather is also of a superior quality, and to the manufacture of leather belting Fire Engine Hose and lace leather they give their exclusive attention. ^m ■^ ADVERTISEMENTS. It is not our intention to give a long dissertation on Industrial Exhibitions but consider a few remarks will not be out of place on such an one as is about to be held now in this the Metropolis and most important City of our great and largely increasing Dominion of Canada, great and important in many respects for we are regarded and watched all the world over, more particularly from the Com- mercial CouutricB of Europe, the merchants of whom are now watching our actions, in a most critical manner, for they believe as well as ourselves, that we are destmed in the future to become one of the greatest and most important Actors in the Drama of this World's History, not only the different countries of Europe are re- garding us with a watchful e;-e but also Asia and Africa are looking at us, and trying to see how we are be made useful to them in a commercial way, and more particularly our sister colonies in those countries, and also the West Indies to whom we are so nearly geographically allied, and then again our most imporiant, and powerful neighbours, from whom we are only divided by an imaginary line, that is in territory are watching us very jealously. Industrial Exhibitions were held iaany centuries ago, but the first in our own times was that inaugurated by our Prince Albert, the beloved husband of Queen Victoria, now very nearly thirty years ago. Tiie object of the Exhibition held in London 1851 was to create a healtliy btimulous to Industry of all kinds, hence the well-known name Industrial Exhibi- tion, and was it attained? There can be but one answer, for it brought together all the nations of the earth to exhibit their wares, we can scarcely name a product or a manufacture that was not then shown to the public, and what was the conse- quence ? It stimulated and emulated the different people of all nations to vie with each other to produce something better than they had seen at the great Fair, ideas and thoughts were exchanged not only between Exhibitors themselves, but among all manufacturers and other producers of almost every article of commerce, and such a stimulus was given to trade as had never before been experienced. After the great Exhibition of 1851 others were held in different great centres of the world, and amcngst them the great Centennial at Philadelphia. From these larger Fairs sprung the smaller ones, which have been held and are now holding in the principle cities cf our own country, all of which are helping to develop the "important and vast resources of our land, not only of our valuable agricultural and timbered lands, but the abundance of our minerals and other natural resources not equalled in any other country, and which will be the means, if propeily developed, of making Canada, if rightly and properly governed in the future, one of the greatest nations of the Earth. Should not therefore this iiea stimulate us, both small and great, to do all in our power to bring all these vast resources into use, and one of these means is the holding of these Exhibitions, where the different products and manufactures are brought together to be seen by all people, and who have there and then the oppor- tunity of exchanging thoughts and ideas, thus causing improvements to be made that probably would have never been thought of, let us therefore give a helping hand, one and all, to forward these Fairs and Exhibitions. II MONTREAL DOMINION EXHIBITION GUIDE. m MONTREAL This the great Commercial Metropolitan City of the Domin'on and the most populous of Canadian cities, is situated at the head of navigation for ocean vessels, 540 miles from the Gulf of St. Lawrence, on the Island of the same name, which lies between the two great rivers of the north, the St. Lawrence and the Ottawa. The island is about 30 miles in length and at its widest some 10 in breadth. With the exception of the mountain, which rises to the height of about 550 feet, it is nearly level, and forms one of the most fertile districts of the Dominion, the climate being particularly favorable to the growth of nearly every kind of grain, vegetables and fruit, and from the display of the latter at the present Exhibition, will prove that no better can be grown in any part of the world. The following are some of the noticeable incidents of the City and its com- merce. THE PORT. Montreal is the point at which ocean navigation terminates and inland navigation commences. Prior to 1851, only vessels of light draught could pass through Lake St. Peter and come up to the wharves ; but a lapse of twenty-nme years shows a great change, for vessels drawing twenty-two to twenty-five feet water now pass down from Montreal to the sea. THE HARBOUR. There is at present existing more than four miles of wharfage in different points from Mill street to the cotton factory at Hochelaga of which more than one-half is in 24 feet depth of water and the Harbour Commissione2S have been duly justified in providing such extensive accommodation, by the immense increase of shipping, arriving in the port this summer, for any person visiting the City will be well repaid to visit the wharves, and witness the number of shii)s from the largest steamer, and first-class sailing clipper, to the smaller, barques, brigs, schooners etc. now moored along side the wharves, from one extreme end to the other. THE WHARVES. The wharves are surmounted by a massive cut-stone wall, along the height of which is a pleasant promenade and wide street, affording a fine view of the PI C ■1 o ■o o a) 3 5 00 ^ O 09 a > H H PI o 3 81 a tti 3 fi» 3 o » fi} 3 a Z o r^ •^ CD D 3 C/3 O z > r DEVINS' VEGETABLE WORM PASTILLES. CHARITABLE INSTITUTIONS. , Among the Principal of which are the following, THE MONTREAL GENERAL HOSPITAL. Owes its origin to the philanthropic efforts of a number of ladies who, about the year 1815. formed themselves into a Society calleo the "Ladies Benevolent Society." The inhabitants entered so heartily into the scheme that, in 1818, a fund of ;^i,2oo was raised for the purposes of the Society, and a soup kitchen was opened, where the ladies superintended the distribution ; but more than this was needed, and the necessity of providing for the sick was presented to the public. The citizens determined to proceed with the erection of a building, and on the 6th day of June, 1821, the foundation stone of the building (which now forms the centre portion) was laid with Masonic honors, by the Right Worship- ful Sir John Johnson, Bart., Past Provincial Grand Master of Canada. In less than a year the building was finished, and on the first of May, 1822, it was opened for the reception of ])atients. On the i8th May, 1831, the Hon. John Richardson, the first President of the Institution, died, at the age of 76 years. His friends, desirous of erecting som.e monument to his memory, at first decided to place a cenotaph in Christ Church, but, when the subscription list was closed, it was found that the amount subscribed for exceeded that required for the work, and, as the demands for admission to the hospital were greater than its capaci- ty, it was resolved to devote the money thus acquired to the enlargement of the building, by erecting a wing, to be called the " Richardson Wing." In 1848, the widow of the late Chief Justice Reid added the wing known as the " Reid Wing," as a monument to the memory of her husband. Two years ago another wing was added in memory of Mr. Morland. V*"' (CLASS 3 -GROUP 5-SECTION 29.) « «» » THE most useful UNIVERSAL Mill yet introduced to public notice is the NEWELL'S PATENT GRINDER. There are many machines so named, but the simplicity and etlcctiveness of this one has fully established its claim to the title used to describe it. Although originally invented to dispose profitably of the bye-product of a lumber mill, the inventor found by experiment it was quite capable of dealing with every substance known to Commerce. It has now been in operation on all kinds of material, for several years. Phosphates. Barytes, Lead, Coal Iron, Copper, Pyrites, Plum- bago, Gold Ore, Quartz, Plaster, Black Oxide. Zinc Ore. Mica, Asbestos, and other Minerals, have all been successfully treated by this Mill. Wheat. Oats, Corn, Flax, Buckwheat, Peas, Rice, I yewoods. Bark, Marabolams, Sumac, Cork, Malt, Spices, Drugs, and all other vegetable substances. Animal substances have been just as surely and cheaply reduced, and include Bones, Horns, G-Uano, Hoofs, and all refuse materials. It is clear, therefore, that no grindable article can be named which the machine is not able to reduce to any degree of fineness. To the manufacturer of Cements, Chemicals, and Fertilizers, this Mill is indispensable. To the Miller it offers a method of reduction, which, for cheapness, economy of the material ground, uniformity in the sample, and coolness, cannot be surpassed. It is the only machine which has ground KOSIN without clogging. Wherever a large quantity of work requires to be done, the Mill is seen at its best. It is now employed on Public Works in Washington City, grinding North River blue lime- stone, for making asphalt sidewalks. The United States Mail Contractor has used it for cruBhing Corn and Oats, for the horses in the Department. Testimonials may be had on application to the General Agency for the Dominion of Canada. The Machines can be seen at work at the Mill premises, 572 William Street, St. Gabriel Locks. The City Passenger Railway Cars, from the Post Office, pass the W^orks every ten minutes, stopping at Chatham Street. A cordial invitation to visit the Mills is extended.
