V. The Officers of this Society shall be a President, Vice-President, two Assistants, Treasurer, Secretary, an Assistant Secretary, a Committee of Charity, and S^teward. VI. The duty of President or Chairman shall be to preside at all Meetings, to regulate the deliberations of the Society, to state and put questions both in the af- tirmative and negative, according to the sense and in- tention of the Meeting— to check undue warmth, or ir- regularity, keep all persons in order; and for this pur- pose he shall have the power of fining an offending Member, not exceeding One Shilling for each offence, without putting to vote; to direct summonses to be is- sued for all General Meetings, and to name the place of Meeting; to have the custody and use of the seal; to approve of all disbursements, and sign all orders of distribution, the account of which shall be submitted to the Society for its satisfaction ; and to execute or super- intend the execution of all the Rules and Orders of tb« Society. VII. The Committee of Charity shall consist of five of the Members, who are to report to the Society any accident or sickness which may befall such of ita own Members as stand in need of aid, with the nature and extent of the assistance required, and in cases where the continuance of sickness, or incapacity for business require attention durir.g the night, they shall w^atch, or procure persons to watch with the sick, at the Society's expense; to inquire into the claims, characters, and circumstances of all who apply for the ordinary or extra- ordinary aid of the Society, to prevent its Charity from 1 i ■A BYE LAWS. 17 t' i Wing improperly or fruitlessly applicii, and to make a regular quarterly report of ttitir pruccedings to the Society. \in. The duty of Steward shall be to attend at tlie place of Meeting, to see it in order, aud to attend the Ballot Box. IX. If any of the Oflicers of this Society, are by sicknfss, or otherwise absent from a regular Meeting, others shall be called to act in their room for the time being, or if any of them move out of the Province, or die during the year, for whith they were elected, the Members assembled at the next Quarterly Meetings shall choose others, as at the Annual Meeting, to serve for the remainder of that year. X. As a stated Provision is made for the Poor, by the Municipal Laws of the Town, to which the Mem- bers of this Society pay their proportion as citizens, the fund of Charity shall rather be applied to the relief and assistance of persons who have met with sudden misfortune, or who suffer by occasional distress, than continued allowance for settled poor, but as no ade- quate regulation can be devised on this subject, suitable to all times and all circumstances, the Society shall al- ways be free tooxeicise its own discression and humani- ty, notwithstanding any thing to the contrary in this liule. XI. At every Annual Meoting of this Society, a Committee of three Members be appointed, to audit the Accounts of the past year, and report on the same at the next quarterly Meeting. XII.
