None but the Chief Justice and the Justices of His Majesty's Court of Kings Bench for the District of Montreal, the Advocates duly ad- mitted to practise in this Province, and Mem- bers of the Bar of Montreal, the SheriiF, and Prothonotaries of the District, shall in future be admitted into this Society, and ou admission shall sign the Rules of the Society. ^ RULE SECOND. No Advocate, vi^ho was admitted to the Bar before the twentieth day of February last, and who did not sign the original articles of Con- stitution of this Society, shall become a Member of this Society, except by the voice of three- fourths of the Members composing the Society, at the time when such Advocate may bs a Can- didate for admission, upon condition of the Can- didate's paying an extra admission fee of X'2 ••](>. i MMWUMM mm A RULE THIRD. No Advocate, admitted to the Bar after the ^Oth day of February last, shall become a Mem- ber of this Association, except by and with the votes and consent of two-thirds of the Members of the Institution.' fi" 1-. RULE FOURTH. Each of the persons who signed the act oi' Constitution of this Society, and are original Members thereof, shall pay towards the purposes of the Institution the sum of ten pounds cur- rency, RULE FIFTH. Every person, who shall be admitted a Mem- ber of this Society within six months from this date, shall upon his election contribute towards the funds of the Society, the sum of £12 •• 10s. currency, and every person who shall, from and after the expiration of six months from this date, be chosen a Member of this Society shall, upon his admission, pay into the funds of the Society the sum of fifteen pounds currency. I » 1'* IIULE SIXTH. For the support of tlie Society, antl for pro- moting its objects, each Member shall, on the last juridical day in October Term of each year pay to the Treasurer of the Society the sum of £2 .. lOs, currency, the first payment to be made ju the last juridical day of October Term now next ensuing. KULE SEVENTH. All the Advocates, now being or hereafter to become Members of this Society, shall pay into the hands of the Treasurer of tlic Society, on or before the last juridical day of each Term of the Court of King's Bench, all fees received from Members of this Society, upon taking oft' defaults, as established by the Tariff" of the said Court of King's Bench. RULE EIGHTH. This Society sliall be governed by a President, Vice-President, a Managing Committee of three Members, of whom tlie Secretary shall be one, a Secretarv, a Treasurer and a Librarian to be chosen aiul appointed as hereinafter provided. ->> a srsE • I- RULE NINTH. the President, Vicc-Presitlcnt, Managing Committee, and Secretary, shall be chosen, licreafter, by a majority of the number of Members of this Society, sufficient to consti- tute a General Meeting as hereinafter regulated, at a meeting to be convened on the last juridical day of October Term in each year. KULE TENTH. The President or Vice-President shall preside at all General Meetings of the Society ; it shall be his duty to convene the Members thereof through the Secretary of the Institution. Tlie Secretary sliall keep minutes of all the proceedings of the Society, summon its Meet- ings, under the direction of the President, and carry oa such correspondence by letters, or otherwise, as may be required by the Committee of Management. To the Committee of Management arc en- trusted the powers of purcliasing books, furnisli- inc- and adapting the room for the reception of the same, of naming a Librarian, fixing his sala- rv and ordering tlie payment thereof. ■A This Committee shall liave the general supcr- intcndancc and arrrangcment of the interest and aiTairs of the Society. The Treasurer shall collect and receive the funds ol* tlie Society, as well entrance as annual subscriptions, default tees, fines, &c. and keep regular accounts of his receipts and disburse- ments. It will be tlic duty of the Librarian to attend in the Library during the hours to be fixed by the Committee, to keep a catalogue of tlie books, under the supcrintcndance of the Secretary, and a register of those withdrawn according to thg rules of the Society. KULE ELEVENTH. No monies shall be paid or disbursed by the Treasurer, except by the written order of the Committee of Management. RULE TWELFTH. The Committee of Management and the Treasurer shall report their proceedings to the Society, twice in each year, on the last day of the Terms ot* April and October, at their semi- mniual Meetings, RULE THIRTEENTH. Every Member of the Society shall, while the Library is open, have access to the Library to use the books j and during the Terms of tiie Court of King's Bencli, or of the other Courts of Judicature held in the Court-House in this city, every Member shall, while any of the saitl Courts is sitting, be at liberty to take any book or books into the rooms, in which the said Courts are held ; and every Member who shall remove or withdraw any book out of the said Library, in vacation, or in Term time, except into the Court rooms during the Session of the Courts for that day, siiall pay to the Treasurer in aid of tiie funds the sum of £2 " 10s. currency. RULE FOURTEENTH. If any Member, in contravention of the fore- going rule, shall withdraw any work, and the same, or a volume or volumes thereoi'bu lost, Ije shall, besides the said penalty of 5^2 •• 10s. pay to the Society the cost price of tlic whole work, of which such volume or volumes may form jiart, without receiving the remaining volumes of sucb work. RULE FIFTEENTH. The Chief Justice and the Justices of the said Court, who arc or may become Members of this Society, shall enjoy the privilege of convening into their Chamber, in the said Court- House, such books as they may require, to be returned it: ^W' 9 wiJiin the Library hours of the same day on which they may be withdrawn, RULE SIXTEENTH. Every Member of this Society, neglecting to pay, to the Treasurer of the Society, all or any sum or sums of money, which by the rules of the Society shall become payable by him, shall, after fifteen days notice in writing given to him by the Managing Committee, forfeit his share and interest in the funds and property of the Society, and be excluded from the Society, un- less such penalty shall be commuted or released by the Society at a General Meeting. RULE SEVENTEENTH. The President of the Society shall, at all times, at the request of any five Members of the So- ciety signified in writing, convene an extraor- dinary Meeting of tlic Society. RULE EIGHTEENTH. Every General Meeting of the Society, whether semi-annual, or extraordinary, shall consist of £>nc-half at least of the Members composing the f>ocicty at the time of such Meeting. >5M^*-, ■if J' "f io RULE NINETEENTH. No person or persons, other than the Mem- bers of the Society, and the Honorary Members thereof, shall have access to the Library of the Institution* RULE TWENTIETH. When any office of this Institution shall be- come vacant by death, or resignation of the person holding the same, or from any other cause, an Extraordinary Meeting shall be called accord- ing to rule, and the vacancy shall be filled. RULE TWENTY-FIRST. The funds and property of the said Society shall be vested and remain in the President of the Society and the Committee of Management, for the time being, in trust for the said Society ; for which purpose, the Members of the said Society, subscribing, and hereafter to subscribe, these presents, do hereby assign and make over, to the said President and Committee, for the time being, all and every their shares, and the share, right, title, and interest of each of them, in or to the said funds and property, and every part thereof. w^ iJ*"** II RULE TWENTY-SECOND.- This Society shall not be dissolved by the death, retirement, resignation or exclusion of any of the Members thereof, nor by any forfei- ture of his rights or interest in the Society, and in its property and funds, but shall continue to subitlst among, and be composed oj^ the surviv- ing, or remaining Members, and of such Mem- bers a^ may afterwards be admitted ; and the share, interest and rights of any Member so dying, retiring, resigning, excluded or suffering forfeiture shall accrue to, and be vested in the surviving and remaining Members of the said Society, and such otiier Members as may be afterwards admUte(J> RULE TWENTY-THIRD. This Society, besides gifts of money, will re- ceive donations of books relating to Jurispru- dence, and the branches of literature connected with that science, and of all works, tracts and nianuscripts relating to the Laws and History of this Province, and will with gratitude record the names of the benefactors. RULE TWENTY-FOURTH. The Governor in Chief, and the Lieutenant (jovcnior of this Province, and the person ad- ininistering the Government of tliis Province* and all the Members of His Majesty's Provincial Court of Appeals, the Cliief Justice of the Pro- vince, the Justices of His Majesty's Court of King's Bench for the District of Quebec, the Provincial Judge of the District of Three-Rivers, and the Judges of the Inferior Districts of Gaspe and Saint Francis, the Attorney-General of the Province^ and also the Solicitor-General and Ad- vocate-General, when not resident at Montreal, shall be Honorary Members of this Institution, RULE TWENTY-FIFTH. All votes of the Society shall be taken by ballot. RULE TWENTY-SIXTH.
