These tables nre not designed to take the place of the more elabo- rate and exi»ensive geograjdiical works, except as a first book to be placed in the hands of '«>arner!'. It is beliflved, and the anthor'n ex- perience supports the con\ iction, that a large maj) with colored tli- visions, assisted by easily ronienibered key-letters or key-words, are ])0werful aids to the mind, in its eilbrt toleai-n and retain considerable niunbers of unconnected names. Not only do key-words help to call to mind long lihts of such names, bur- they stump them u))on th« memory in such a manner, that, without being burdensome, they are not easily forgotten. In about tiireo weeks of half-hour dady lessons, a class of small boys wer« enabled to name, in con.seeutive order, the foktv-six counties of Ontario, beginning on the Georgian Bay, and following the water Una down the Lakes Huron, Erie, Ontario, the Kiver 8t. Lawrence, and up the Ottawa, with the inteiior counties. They also, at the same time, comj)letely mastf^red the sixTV counties of Quebec, in their order on the nuij) ; the fouiitekn counties of New Brunswick; the EioHTEEN counties of Nova Scotia, v/ith the counties of Prince Edward's Isle, making, in all, one hundred and fokty-one counties, or more than they could learn and remember in three months, in the ordinary mode of teaching. They could also give the location of each counfy with the name of the county to the east or west of it, as they are taken in this work in the Older in which they appear upon the map. After tlie counties are thoroughly mastered, the students are better prepared to understand the physical features of the counti-y, with its soil and ])roductious, which is their next step, and for which they are referred to the larger works. This little w^ork. embi-acing only a few of the leading features of America and Eui'ope, is doubtless imperfectly executed, yet it is sub- mitted to the judgment of a candid public, with the hope that it may useful in promoting an essential branch of youthful instruction, 'd perhaps, in stimulating others to acquaint themselves with tlio geography of their country.
