Original copies in printed paper covers are filmed beginning with the front cover and ending on the last page with a printed or illustrated impres- sion, or the back cover when appropriate. All other original copies are filmed beginning on the first page with a printed or illustrated impres- sion, and ending on the last page with a printed or illustrated impression. The last recorded frame on each microfiche shall contain the symbol — »- (meaning "CON- TINUED"), or the symbol V (meaning "END"), whichever applies. Maps, plates, charts, etc., may be filmed at different reduction ratios. Those too large to be entirely included in one exposure are filmed beginning in the upper left hand corner, left to right and top to bottom, as many frames as required. The Great Journey "..^gun Till: sixteenth day o( A..ireh, iijdI, witiitssed the hef^mnin^ of wli.it we are now fully justified in regarding; as .i momentous incident in the history of the Hritish Empire. The heir apparent, with hi?, fair consort, upon that day em- harked on their si.\ months' oeean truis'j. With the exception of Inilia, all the chief (Kirtions of the mighty Dotninion, oyer which the Duke's august fathc rules, werecomprehindi-d in thi' list of visits to l>e m.ide liy the illustrious wanderers. It is not the first time, of course, tliat an heir apparent to the Hritish Crown has made personal ac(|uaintance with its outlying; possessions. Kin^; l-'dward did so when he occupied that position ; and his vi.-.it to Canada is rememlicred liy many who will greet his son on this occasion, .ifter a lajise of 40 years. Hut since that date a remarkable drawini; tOf»ether between the Mother Coup'ry and her trans- ocuanic offspring has ■holly changed their previous relation , and that notable fact di -erved commemoration in an ecjualiy :ioteworthy manner. Most rightfully, therefore, the Koyal tour is invested with all the pomp and ceremony befitting a gr.ind state function. All the elaborate details of the long cruise were planned in that lofty conception of its character. 'l"herefore it is that Canada i?. fully jTe- pand, like the .•\ustralian Commonwealth to insure spectai ul.ir grandeur in the reception of the royal guests. The Duke and Duchess of C'ornwall and York have seen ni.iny l.e.iiitilul siglits during their tour thus far, but the trip through Canad.i in this gloriou.-- -.ea- son of the year, will, we proudly expect, be a fitting climax ai a journcN . every stage of which has seer, its own particul.ir tnuinplisand picturescjue lieautie-^. Tlie royal couple, now our guests, were married in the Chapel Royal, St. James, on July 6th, 1893, the procession to the church beins witnessed by dense crowds of people. The service was performed by the .\rchbishop of Canterbury, assisted by the Bishops of London and Rochester, and there were present the Oueen and nil the royal family and a large number of royal and distinguished guests. Her Royal Highness is the daughter of the late Duke and Duchess of Teck (sister of the Duke of Cambridge and cousin of the late Queen Victoria.) Leaving the Shores of England Amid the heirty greetings and the warmest good wishes of their family, the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall and York left English shores on Saturday, March i6th. Londoners turned out in force to wish them good-bye on the previous day, a big crowd cheering heartily as the Duke and Duchess drove up to Victoria 'station in an open semi-state carriage, with postillions and four horses. .\ few moments later came the King and Oueen, with Princess Victoria, and Prince and Princess Charles, occupying open four-horsed carriage.^, with postillions and out- riders and escorted bv Life Guards. .\s the first naval port of the kingdom, Portsmouth, was anxious to w, Icome the Royal party olticially. The special stopped at the town station for the municipal greetin-s. Then the train went .piickly on to the South Railway jetty, where the "Victoria and Albert," and HMS. •■ Ophir" which had been specially fitted out for their Roy.U Highnesses and the -.•scort were berthed. The weather was grey and chilly. m At the Farewell Luncheon At the farewell luncheon on board the " Ophir," Mr. Chamberlain, as Colonial Secretarv Earl Spencer, a former Lord of the .\dmiralty, and the Ivarl of Nort!-.- brook were included in the list of guests. There were two toasts, the King pro- nosing the health of the Duke and Duchess : " God speed, a prosperous voya-e and a safe return." His Majesty displayed much feeling. He spoke ot what w is to be a prolonged absence of their Royal Highnesses as a great personal hardship to himself and Oueen Alexandra, but one of the chief reas,.ns of the tour, s.aid His Maiestv was his desire to acknowledge througn the Duke, the loy.d help the Colonir. had given to the Mother Country during recent events. The Duk.' then proposed the health of the King.
