MANUFACTURED AND SOLD IN CANADA BY GEOf^OE F. BOSTCUICJ^. ,.!»- ■ 24 Front St. West, Toronto, Ont. ' er on top. Each sheet has a fastener of special construction attached at the back, at which i)lace the |)nper is strengthened with cloth so that it is impossible for the fastener to tear out. A tin yoke passes around the necks of the fasteners, keeping all in place. The Index is 1 %^\^ perfectly expansible, so that any desireil number of letters can be file i between any two sheets. The press-board cover is very thick, so that when the Wire is down the pressure is evenly distributed, and the curling up of the MSTiNtn. front of the Index (formerly a source of inconvenience, when a light cover was used,) is now impossible. Our wood work is of the best quality — nothing but luoroughly seasoned and choice lumber is used — and handsomely finished inside and out. The sides (and doors also, when made with doors,) are paneled and veneered, and the back is also paneled and made of the same wood and Jinislicd the same as the body of the Cabinet, which allows the Cabinet to be placed anywhere without fear of be- ing unsightly. Cabinets with doors are provided with Locks. This description of the parts would be incom- plete without speciplly mentioning the so-called INDEX FASTENING DEVICES by which the Index is held in the File. As we have before explained, the Index Sheets are held together by a yoke which encircles the necks of the fasteners. The File is cut out inside at the back, forming a recess which admits the projecting Index Fasteners and yoke. The Slide when put on passes over the yoke and hides it from view, and firmly holds the Index in place. It will be seen that the inside of the File is entirely free from obstructions (see cut on opposite page), so that letters can be squarely filed at any ptunt against the back or sides, giving it a greater capacity and making a neat volume. INSIDE View OF SLIOC AND FABTCNINO OCVICCS.I Araberg's System of lyOtter Filing. '■Is If: EXPLANATION. !»^HE above shows the outward appearance of an Ambery Caiiinet, with doors, containnig twenty-four Files. The first fifteen Files are lettered from A to Z. It is our intention that each F'le shall have a proportionate share of lefters filed. If one File were lettered "A" and the next "B," ';he proportion wo'il'l be unequal, as we have ascertained that in one thousand names "A" will average twenty-seven names and "B" ninety-nine — together they make a total of one hundred and twenty-six, and by di aiding as above shown we make the proportion right. "C ' will average sixty-seven nanics in one thousand; "D E" toge^^her sixty-eight, etc. Each one of these fifteen Files has an Index inside, consisting of twenty five expansible sheets, which, by means of lettered ma"gins, subdivides the papers filed. The "H" F'ile, for example, has an Index lettered as per combinations shown on opposite pagt', which shows the style and size of type used. The lecters or papers are placed flat between the Index sheets, \vh.ich expand at any part to accom- modate letters filed. The filing is exceedingly simple— letters from "Hall" would be placed on lop of Index Slitet XT A T l-.>-H.v-10 ll^/Il. . . v,..viv . .jv^.., V,.. vv^|j v,» i_,v,vtv,l.> l l ^_/ I l . l t ^^ I I I I I tl 1 1 , WH LWJJ \J I ^q HEN] H O F HAL In making these Indexes, Mr. Amberg has ascertained not only the relative importance of every letter, but of each subdivision of every letter ; the Index divisions are based on one hundred thousand selected names of his own compilation for this sole object — a work covering many years of tedious labor — and having, therefore, a mathematical or computed basis, there will be as nearly as possible an equal number of letters filed away in each space. The first fifteen Files of the Cabinet illustrated on opposite page are used to file all letters, orders, tele- grams, postal cards, or general correspondence of all kinds. There are in every business, special papers, such as Bills, Contracts, Invoi':'2s, Receipts, etc., which need to be provided for; and again in many instances. Branch Houses, Salesmen, or other correspondents, from whom letters are received daily. To accommodate this class of papers we have a large variety of Indexes, some of which are dated, others alphabetical, and still others entirely blank. Of such Indexes, the ToUowing are used most frequently : • Index No. 24a- " 3 to- ol 08- »»- lOO- 63- a»8- Entire alphabet trom A to Z. ' Two entire alphabets, each covering twelve leaves, keeping two kinds of papers separate in one File. Dated, one month on each leaf, lasting tvro years. Dated, one-half month on each leaf, lasting one year. Weekly divisions, lasting six months, from January to June inclusive. •Weekly divisions, lasting six months, from July to December inclusive. ■Daily Divisions, one day to a leaf, thirty-one leaves. Arranged by dates, to keep correspondence from two persons, or two kinds of papers, separate, in same File. Arranged by dates, to keep correspondence from three persons, or three kinds of papers, separate, in same File. 2»» " 30<> Arranged by dates, to keep correspondence from four persons, or four k, ids of papers, separate, in same File. a 7 a -Six blank leaves, margins not lettered. " a7l Twelve blank leaves, margins not lettered. 358 Eighteen blank leaves, margins not lettered. aaO Twenty-five blank leaves, margins not lettered. aOtt For Filing by numbers, from 1 to 500. a»7 For Filing by numbers, from 601 to 1000. 435 One half with monthly dates for one year, other half full alphabet, A to Z. 434 One half with twelve blank leaves, other half full alphabet, A to Z. Referring to the illustration, the special labels there shown suggest the use of a variety of these Indexes. If "Chicago House" writes on an average once a day, use No. 6i Index ; if twice a day, use No. 98 Index; if four or five times a day, use alternately, Nos. 99 and 100. For "Contracts and Receipts," Index No. 310 is proper. The File "Jenkins-Norton" suggests the No. 298 Index. "Banks" is for letters from Banks and Bankers, which are filed in Index No. 242. "Circulars," when used for the classification of circulars issued, take .say No. 358 Index ; if u.^ed for filing circulars received, use No. 242 Index. Lastly, we have four Files for "Invoices," divided from A to Z. This discloses the fact that it is not necessary to restrict special papers to one File — in fact, in arranging a Cabinet, each class of papers should have as many Files as the quantity of such papers requires. The alphabet is properly divided as follows : Alphabet in 2 Files — A to K — L to Z " 3 Files — A to G — H to N — O to Z " 4 Files — A to E — F to K — L to Q — R to Z " 6 Files — A B C — D to G — H to L — M to R — S to Z 6 Files — A B C — D to 3 — II to K — L to O — P to S — T to Z " 7 Files — A B — CD E — F G H — I to L — M to Q — R S — T to Z " 8 Files — A B — CD — E F G — H to K — L M — N to R — S — T to Z Mr, Amberg has computed the division of Files up to 150, but it is unnecessary to print a further list. We can supply a division of the alphabet to cover any number of Files, ivith Indexes to correspond — we do not limit the choice to a few selected computations, as we have them all. The manner in which the alphabet is divided into 10, 15, 18, 24, 30. 40, 52, and 75 parts is shown in the different illustrations of Cabinets in this Catalogue. HEN a number of papers are to be filed, first partially draw out ail the Fiies — those in the bottom row as far as possible, and gradually towards the top, each a little less, which, will leave ample space to slip the papers into the proper Files; after the letters, etc., are dis- tributed, we take one File after another and put away the papers into proper space in the Index. Should a letter accidentally be "distributed" into the wrong File, it will be impossible to file it; for instance,^ letter from "Baker" cannot be put away in a "C" File, because its Index provides only for names betjin- ning with initial "C" — hence, mistakes in filing into the wrong File cannot occur. In order to obtain the full benefit of the capacity of the Files, it will be profitable to observe the following directions : Always file against the back and also against the upper or lower end of the File. Note size sheets should be put two on a page, except that none should cover up the lettering of the transfer casc—emfty. Index — turn them around if they do. Postal cards should be filed in the corners, and, if numerous, four on a pag" These simple directions being observed, renders reference to the contents much more agreeable, and makes a neat and more compact volume. REMOVALS KROIVl CABINBT. Many persons have a natural desire to empty out the Cabinet at the end of stated periods, say once in six months, or once a year. This is all wrong, for a grmt many reasons. The following system, based on the economical principle o{ emptying no File until full, is the most satisfactory. When one of the Files is full — it does not matter which one it may be — it is emptied of its contents. Index included, which are placed in Transfer Case number I, and stored away. A record of the removal is made on a Record Slip provided in the bottom of the File emptied, embracing the dates begin- ning and ending, and the number of the volume. The volumes are simply TRANSFER CASE— FiLLtD. numbered consecutively, no lettering or marking being necessary. The File being empty, requires a new Index, same form number as the one removed, and a new volume is begun. When another File is full, its contents are removed to Transfer Case number 2, dates recorded, etc. When a third File is full, its contents are placed into Transfer Case number 3, etc., etc. This system of removals is continued regularly, and the record kept in each File makes refer- ence to volumes much more direct and rapid than any other plan that could be adopted. THE TRANSEER CAvSE is a substantial box, the back being of wood, with an aperture or "slot" in the inside. When the contents of a File are placed in the Transfer Case, the Index fasteners are inserted into the slot, and secured by the racking down of a small strip of wood that is provided in each one. Outwaidly the Transfer Cases, when placed on a shelf, resemble a row of books, being neatly printed and lined to present that effect. Each purchaser of a Cabinet is given four Transfer Cases, numbered i to 4, and when others are ordered, the consecutive numbering is done by us without charge. Orders should state ^vhat number to begin with. RECORD SLIP IN BOTTOM OF EACH FILE. (Reduced Siie. Imaginafy Dates are hef^ used.) FROM TO H»rrr 10 Telnae Kg. I — Folding, endorsing, binding, numbering, pasting and inuexing are all dispensed with; the mere act of putting away a letter does more than all these. 2 — So many Indexed divisions exist, that the letters from each correspondent are practically isolated from the rest, consequently few papers need be handled when a particular one is wanted. 3 — Papers are kept free from dust and mutilation, cannot be filed in the wrong File, and are instantly found when wanted. 4— A letter five years old, filed by this system, can be as readily and cerlainly found as if received within thirty days, and in almost the same time. 5— A system of Indexing guaranteed perfect in simplicity, accuracy, detail and extent. Nothing guessed at — all perfected by years of study and actual experience. 6 — A handsome, durable article; A-i in material and construction; improved time and again, tested by experience, perfected in every part, and worth many times its cost. The Cabinets are made to last, and like any other first-class article they more than repay in service the slight additional first cost. ITS PERFECTED FEATURES ARE: 1 — Entirely free from obstructions inside, allowing letters to be filed squarely against back and ends. 2 — A quick acting automatic Spring, which never loses its power. 3 —A constant, even pressure, which is greater as the File Jills up; directly bearing where most needed, and indirectly, by means of h ^y Index cover, over entire surface of contents. 4 — A removable Label, which can be easily changed for another when desired. 5 — An Index which expands freely as File fills up. 6— When raised, the Wire forms a rest while referring; contents open out and may be turned over like the leaves of a book, or taken out and replaced at pleasure. 7 — Postal cards and small pieces of paper are as firmly held in place as large sheets. 8— A Spring; occupying very little space in the inside of the File, so that a compact volume 2)^ inches thick is obtained without crowding. 9 — A Transfer Case in which the contents are as securely fastened as in the File itself. 'o — A Transfer Case from which letters can be removed and afterwards replaced without disturbing others, and which keeps them free from dust. AMBERG CABINET, 8 FILES, WITH DOORS.
