V ' >- - *:. i'i J^ t RE SOL UTIONS unanimowfy adopttd at the Annual Meeting of the Auxiliary Society for the District, held at Quebec, OH Monday Evening, June 29, 1848. The Rev. Doctor RiCHRY in the Chair. • After the reading of the Report by the Secretary, the Rev. O. Churchill, it was Resolved unanimously, I. — That this Meeting receives with satisfaction, and recommends for distribution the Report which has now been read, and expresses its deTont thanksgivings to Almighty God for the success which has attended the efforts of the Wesloyan Missionary Society, in common with other Protes- tant and Evangelical Institutions. II. — That this Meeting devoutly recognixes the importance and necessity of more fervent ^;rayer to the Great Head of the Church for the removal uf the obstacles to Missionary enterprise which still preuent themselves in different parts of the world, — for the nniversal increase of sealous and devoted labourers in the mission field — and for the more copious out-pouring of the Holy Spirit upon the Church and the world at large. III. — That while this Meetine commends the assiduitj^ which has marked the eiforts of the various Branch Societies in this District, during the past year, it regards at the same time the aggressions and activity of the enemies of the truth, and the amount of spiritual darkness and destitution which still rests upon the heathen world, as a powerf\il incentive to renewed efforts ; — and pledges itself to continued and mcreasing exertions in each depart- ment for the future. IV. — That this Meeting thankfully recognizes the exertions of all parties who have engaged in the laudable enterprise of sustaining and extending these important Missions, and resolves that the following persons constitute the OiHcers and Members of this Auxiliary Society during the ensuing year: — ' . »« •■ ' * Treasurer, ..'. Chubohill, Financial Secretary, REPORT. \^/>AA/\^^/\/VA/WNAn/W In presenting the Anniutl Report of the Camada Bait Auxiliary Wks- LBTAM BfiMioKART SooiBTT for 1848, the Committee beg to remarlc that while the general distress and commercial embarrassments of the year which is past, awakened in their minds the most lirely concern respecting the annual income, necessary to sostdn in an efficient manner th'> operations of the Pasbmt Sooibtt, now so extensive and important— the announce- ment of the Income and Expenditure for the year 1847, very lately received, has excited in their minds the most devout feelings of gratef\il thanksgiving, that so much has been done to sustain operations with which the spiritual condition of so many of their fellow creatures is so largely identified. Although the aggregate amount is smaller than that of the year preceding, yet there is a powerful proof elicited from the returns, of the deep interest felt by the Wesleyan Church throughout the world, in upholding this mighty enterprise — of the increasing desire to manifest its profession of attachment to the Redeemer's Kingdom, in extending its borders to "the " utmost verge of the green earth." The following is the Report (Financial,) for the year 1847, 31st Decem- ber:— FINANCIAL STATEMENT. £ a. d. Total amount of Income from all sources, 103,619 1 9 Balance in hand from 1846, 4,994 9 4 108,613 11 1 ----■■■ — ' •—^^^^•_^___ The Expenditure for the past year has been 114,606 17 6 Leaving a deficiency for 1847, to be provided for, of. 5,993 1 5 The preset duty of the Committee is to oifer a brief Review of the difl^arent Stations occupied by the Society. L EUROPE. 1. MissioMB iv Ibblakd. — The Society now occupies 20 Stations in 13 diflferent Counties — some of which are in large towns or villages, others are extended through large tracts of country, and several are in the most remote parts of the country, where, though the Congregations are small, yet the Word of God is precious, and is gladly received. The number of Mission Schools is 62, containing about 4,000 children. It will be very nfttunlly expected, thut the famine and peitilcno* whicfi, by periaiuion of Divine ProTidenoe, have visited tbit unhappy country, with the powerful political agitation which now prevaili, will have been aeverely felt within the range of the Society'* operations. The diatrcM and suiferinK in lome of the Uwalities have been shared by iieveral of the Missionaries themselves, yet the most gratifying intelligence has been received from these setf-donying .>ien, from time to time, of their unwearied diligence, their untiring zeal, and encouraging success. a. Framok.— The most disinterested state:aen(, and mo»t gratifying whicL could be presented to the public respecting the operations of the Wesleyan Missionary Society in France, may be found in the testimony which has recently been borne in London, both in public and in private, by the Rev. Dr. Baird, who, from many years' attentive observation, personally, of the state of religion upon the continent of Europe, is so competent to decide upon the kind of means needed for its advancement — who says, "The " Wesleyans have done much for France, but I would say to them, that not " fifty, but a hundred more of their Missionaries are wanted here." 3. SwiTZEBLAND. — The State persecution of religion in the Canton do Vaud, still continues to be severely felt. The labours of the Missionaries during the past year, have sometimes been violently interrupted — yet they still maintain their position, and we are not without hope that, in the Provi- dence of Qod, the vigour of the persecution will soon have exhausted itself, and the free and unfettered efforts of the Missionaries be brought to bear upon the prejudices and superstitions of the people. 4. In Spain— the labours of the Missionary have not been in vain in the Lord. In Europe, we have 30 Stations; 50 Missionaries; 4,789 Members; 75iti Scholars. IL ASIA. 1. NoBTH AND South Cbtlon. — In the respective Singhalese and Tamnl' Districts, all the Missions are reported to be in a state of useful efficiency and vigour. In the South especially, the Missionaries report an increase of 37 Members, besides 35 in the Kandyan proviones, which have not been taken into account The printing press is employed on the Singhalese translation of the Scriptures, and in the multiplication of useful school books and tracts. The native Normal School, of which the Rev. Dr. Eessen h the Rector, has prepared 30 Students, who are about to be sent throughout the country, to take charge of Schools, under the patronage of Government. As a proof of the estimation of the usefulness of our Educational Institu- tions by the British Government, we observe that it has passed the follow- ing native Educational Estimate for the current year, viz.; — Native Kormallnstitution, £ 7900 » Preparing and Publishing Books in vernacular languages, 46& « Establishing Thirty Singhalese Schools, 1142 O Salaries to Singhuese Masters in English Schools, 900 o X2600 «• a. FtMiDBiroT or ICadrab and tbb MtiOM TitiiTORr.— Th« raoorda of tho Ifadru DUtriot for the year, are in miniature thoM of the Chrifltian Church at large. The Miuionariei are reported to hare been diligently employed in the different departments of the work, and their tuc- oeu hae been encouraging. Some interesting accounts of conversions and happy ieaths have been received both from Madras and the country Stations of the Mysore country. The Schools, also, both Sabbath and Day Schools, are in a state of pleasing efficiency. The total number of books printed at the Mission Press, in Bangalore, during the year, han Seen 10,760. No. of pages, 843,420. 3. AusTBALASiA AND PoLTMisiA.— In Australia Felix, South Australia and Western Australia, the labours of the Wesleyan Missionaries are confined chiefly to British settlers and their descendants. The work generally on this account does not present such a variety of details — interesting from their novelty, as is presented where the efforts of the Missionary are employed in evangelizing the barbarous aboriginal tribes of distant lands; nevertheless, in the erection and enlargement of Churches — in the increase of numbers— and an extending and growing interest manifested in the prosperity of the Redeemer's Kingdom, at their local Missionary Anniver- laries— the prospects of the Society are very encouraging in New South Wales. Im Vam Dixman's Land there is a reduction of the number of Church Members, through emigration from the Colony, but there are cheering indi- cations of g^ood, for the encouragement of the faithftil and devoted labourer, amidst every source of discouragement that exists. In Nbw Zealand. — Under the excellent general superintendence of the Rev. Walter Lawry, whose episcopate extends to the Friendly and Fejee Islands also, the state of the Mission is such, as at once to excite in the mind of the Christian philanthropist feelings of gratitude towards Him who, in the midst of wars and tumult, has to so great an extent preserved in peace the infant Churches gathered after many y(.^ars of patient and prayer- ful exertion, from amongst a people who were sunk in ignorance and cruelty — and of anxious solicitude that the native converts may hold fast their pro- fession, your Committee look with thankfulness upon the fact, that so many of these converts who have been exposed to all the evil influences attendant upon a state of warfare and of incipient civilization— have proved faithful in the hour of temptation and trial. Im tub Fbibndly Islands. — The death of Josiah Tubou, an aged and Christian King, has placed upon the throne the old and tried auxiliary of our Missions, King Geo. Jaafaahan, of Habai, a leader and local preacher in the Church of Christ— a Christian Sovereign among his people. In one Cir- cuit, 22 Infant Schools are in vigorous operation — in nearly all, the Work of Ood is in a prosperous state. In Fbjeb. — There has been during the year, an extensive revival of reli- gion — there have been printed at the Mission press, 3000 Hymn Books, and I M ! I 8 60,000 Society Tickets. The Missionaries are all engaged in preparing a correct translation of the New Testament, in the language of Fejee. In Asia at large, including Australia and Polynesia, there are 29 Stations; 59 Missionaries; 9593 Members; 16,498 Scholars. ' *' ' ' UL AFRICA. SocTHBRN ArRiOA.— The Society's Missiods on the South Eastern bor- der 6f the Cape Colony, in common with others, have been placed in circum- stances of deep and painful interest. The storm of war has swept over the country, and the beneficial labours of the Ministers of the Gospel of Peace have been rudely interrupted. Through Divine mercy, the Mission families have been preserved firom personal violence — although exposed to much privation and alarm. In the Cape District, in Albany and CafiFraria, and also in the Bechuana District, notwithstanding the troubles alluded to, there is devout reason to thank God and take courage. WssTBRN AvBiOA. — The Superintendent of the Sierra Leone District, writes thus: "I would express my conviction that the Work of God is prospering in every place, while the very orderly state of things in all the Circuits, speaks well for the brethren that are there employed." At the Gambia, the operations of the Mission have been seriously inter- rupted by affliction and death. The Gold Coast and Ashanti Missions have been re-inforced by additional labourers, and a decided slate of spiritual improvement is a source of encouragement to all. In Africa, we have 53 Slatioos; 60 Missionaries; 8,531 Members; 15,461 Scholars. ;V.!/ AMERICA. 1. Wbst Indian Missions. — In the five large Districi^ in the West Indies, there is found a seriously inadequate supply of Ministerial labour. The appeals on this subject are painful to read in the present financial posi- tion of the Parent Society— at the same time, it is a matter of encourage- ment to know that the untiring efibrts of the Missionaries have, with the Divine blessing, realized the most beneficial results. In the whole group, we have 53 Stations, 89 Missionaries, 54,760 Members, 23,674 Scholars. 3. Bbitish North Ambbica. — This comprises the following Districts, viz.: Eastern Canada, (the District of Canada West having daring the year been united with the Canada Conference) — Nova Scotia— New Brunswick — Newfoundland, and the Hudson's Bay Territory. In these Districts, there are found (exclusive of the Canada Conference, which returned last June a membership of 21,749,) 99 Stations, 105 Missionaries, 18,132 Mem- bers, 12,458 Scholars.
