 Mayor of Montreal, and Member of Parliament fur ilai- 
 sonneuve, was born in Longueuil in 1S50. Ke is a man 
 of great ability and determination, which lias been proved 
 both ill his parliamentary, civic and professional career. 
 
 A graduate of McGill in 1873, a lawyer by profession, 
 and a King's Counsel. 
 
 Elected Mayor in 189S, he is now filling a second 
 term. 
 
 HONORABLE GEORGE A. DRUMMOND 
 
 was born iu Edinburgh in 1829, came to Canada when 
 twenty-five years old. He is a man of unblemished repu- 
 tation, and has been clo.sely identified with Montreal's 
 progress both in commerce, arts and philanthrophy. He 
 was called to the Senate thirteen years ago, is \'ice- 
 President of the Bank of Montreal, and on the directorate 
 of many coumercial corporations.

 moved into the splendidly equipped building on St. Denis 
 Street. Wgr. Laflamnie, the eminent historian, is Rector 
 at Quebec, and Mgr. Racicot vice-Rector here. Among 
 the aluunii are and have been some of the most dis- 
 tinguished Canadians. 
 
 ROYAL VICTORIA COLLEGE FOR WO.,.EN 
 
 IS one of Lord Strathcona's most recent gifs to McG H 
 University. 
 
 The building is situated on Sherbrooke Street, outside 
 the College grounds, but clo.se enough for the convenience 
 of the students. 
 
 In front of the building is a fine statue, in bronze, of 
 our late Queen, the design being the work of Princess 
 Louise, Duchess of Argj le.

 Ill McGill University Montreal can boast of possessing 
 an institution of learning which ranks with the best i:i 
 the world, whether as to buildings, equipment, or teach- 
 ing staff. The foundation of the college was due to Hon. 
 James McGill, who left his residence, Burn.side, for that 
 purpose. Although chartered in 1821, it was 1829 before 
 teaching began. Since then wealthy Montrealers have 
 vied with each other in adding to its efficiency. William 
 Mol.son, Peter Redpath, Thomas Workman, J. H. R. 
 Molson, Sir Win. C. McDonald, and Lord Strathcona 
 being among the number. Dr. Peterson is the present 
 Principal.

VICTORIA BRIDGE. 
 
 Whether t!ie orij^inal construction of the \'ictoria 
 Uridgf or its re-huilding be considered, it is unquestion- 
 ably one of the greatest enj^ineerinji^ feats in the world. 
 The first bridge was a sinyle-track tulnilar one : its suc- 
 cessor is a y;irder and lattice-work double-track bridge, 
 with roadways for pedestrians and vehicles. The bridir*^ 
 is a mile and three-quarters in length, aiul rests on twent\ ■ 
 four jners. Tlie first stone was laid July 20, i>^54, the 
 first tr. 'n passed over the bridge December 19. 1S59, and 
 the Prince of Wales drove the last rivet and opened the 
 bridge August 25. 1S60. The new bridge was constructed 
 between 1.S96 and 1S9S, without interfering with traffic. 
 
THE CHATEAU deRAMEZAY. 
 
 This building is one of the oldest in Canada, having 
 been erected by Claude de Ramczay, Governor of Mont- 
 real, between 1703 and 1706, 
 
 After being occupied for many purposes it was bought 
 by the City, in 1893, for a free Museum, and has since 
 been under the management of the Numismatic and Anti- 
 quarian Society, who handed over their fine coUeclion as 
 the nucleus of a museum. 
 
 There is a priceless collection within its walls of relics 
 of old Montreal.

BOXSI-XOrRS CHURCH. 
 
 Ronsecours Church is the oldest place of worship in 
 ^^ontreal, and tjoes back as a site to the foundation of the 
 city. The <ni-iii:il bniUUiij; was burned down in 1754, 
 and the present edifice was commenced in 1771- In 1S33 
 it had a narrow escape from destruction in the St. Paul 
 Street fire, the steeple catchiiij; several times. Th^ 
 church, which is a most interesting old place to visit, 
 was restored a few years since, an a-rial cliapel constructed 
 high up in the air, and the figure of the Virgin, which 
 had always sto:jd on the roof, replaced by a massive gilt 
 statue.
