 there unhappily exist an immense number of temptations,

 ol'evorv kind are provided for the satisfying of man's natu- 
 ral rippctiics, and even tlu^ most \ icious tastes of corrupt 
 hu?iia-^ nnture are pardcre.1 to by the crafty and designing. 
 YoUi)g men, m&ro f'speciallv th'^sc who have left the country 
 and reside in town, for ti^e p'u-pose of learning some branch 
 of business, too often find themselves becoming gradually 
 entangled in a net of fascinating sin, or perhaps completely 
 involved in a whirl of revelry, before one year has rolled 
 u -.y. Without speci^'ing the evils which predominate in 
 this place, it can truly be said, that from many an anxious 
 parent and many a Christian friend, who know them too 
 well; tears and prayers have mingled before the mercy seat 
 of God. In a number of Christians there has been a strono- 
 feeling awakened to bring some powerful counteracting influ- 
 ence to bear against the existing evil : this feeling has 
 grown, and is now matured into an Association. 
 
 It is purposed that this shall be a social organization of 
 all those who love the Lord Jesus Christ in sincerity and

 in truth : having the same mind that was in IIim " who 
 M-ent about doing good ;"— a union of all those who with 
 " one heart are striving together for the faith of the Gospel." 
 It is hoped that this truly Christian feature of the Institution 
 -the combination of Christ's people, of whatever evangelical 
 (Mrirch-will gather around it many large-hearted and 
 zealous supporters. A Christian fellowship, so often for- 
 vently desired, is thus, as in other instances, realized amoncrgt 
 lis, and many Soldiers of the Cross, who for years fought 
 smgle-handed, arc now found standing side by side, and in a 
 l»road phalanx waging war against the great enemy of souls, 
 •'having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind.'' 
 
 The design o^ the Association will be fully seen in the 
 "Objects" and "llules" which follow. 
 
 A Lib'ary will bo formed, from which sound, useful and 
 religious books may be had, and to which easy access may 
 be obtained, at a charge within the compass of most all. 
 Lectures, at once instructive and calculated to lead the mind 
 to God, will be delivered by persons duly qualified, and 
 invited by tho Association, at stated periods, during the 
 winter season. A Heading Room will be open where all 
 useful and solid periodicals may be read: and above all it is 
 humbly hoped that the genial influence of true religion will 
 work its silent way, upon those who may be brought within 
 Its reach, testifying to them, that <' godliness has the pro- 
 nnse of the life that now is. as well as of that which k to

 That this Association bo called tho " Halifax Young 
 Men's Christian Association." 
 
 ARTICLE 11. 
 
 That the objects of the Association shall bo 
 
 First.— The improvement of the spiritual and mental condi- 
 tion of Young Men. 
 
 Second. — The formation of a Christian Library and Reading 
 Room. 
 
 Thikd.— Rooms and accommodation for Bible Classes and 
 social prayer meetings. 
 
 FouuTH.— Courses of lectures on Religious subjects, as well 
 as secular having reference to religion, and the 
 employment of every other available means whereby 
 the increase of real vital religion may be promoted. 
 
 ARTICLE III. 
 
 That as it is the desire of the Association to admit no one 
 to membership who does not give decided evidence of his 
 conversion to God, therefore no person shall be proposed 
 who shall not be a Member in good standing of one of the

 It shall be the duty of the Committee to manage all the

 AIlTiCLE I. 
 
 That the Managing Committee shall meet at least once 
 a fortnight on the evening of every alternate Monday at 
 half-past seven. Special meetings of the Committee vhen 
 required to be summoned by the Secretary. 
 
 ARTICLE II. 
 
 Seven members of the Managing Committee shall consti- 
 tute a quorum for the transaction of business, and in the 
 absence of the President and all the Vice Presidents a 
 Chairman to be appointed by the Members of the Committee. 
 
 iiETICLE III. 
 
 All payments shall be made by the Treasurer, under the 
 authority of the Chairman of the Committee at ^vhose 
 meeting the payments were ordered to be made. 
 
 ARTICLE lY. 
 These Bye-Laws may be amended or added to at any time 
 by a vote of two-thirds of the Members of the Managing 
 Committee.
