In the 'Auld-Kirkyard' (Saint Andrew's Church Burying- Ground Fergus,) thereare i iSTomb-Stonesor Monumentb: 109 ofwhich are Head-stones, 4 Altar or flat raised stones, 4 are Obelisks, and one is a pillar, with inscriptions on each of its sides. A few of these require setting up, and a few are fractured. Whole or broken, the inscriptions are given. Two of those who are commemorated, rest elsewhere : James Mel vin a promisingy oung man, son of Mrs W. Tytler — now residing in Elora, and Alexander Dyce Wilson, a brother of Mrs James Webster formerly of Fergus, nowofGuelph. , Thcyoungman A. Duncan, who -e death and its cause, are mentioned in the inscription on one of these stones, was not the only one laid here, who met his death in the same or a si- milar way. Alex. Hendry, a good mechanic and respectable man, whose death occurred as early as 1838, was also killed while chopping : Andrew Wood who with his brothers resi- ded in Garafraxa, on the farm which passed into the hands ofMrJohnGerrie, was ) 'lied by the falling of a tree. Being afflided with deafness iic was of course more exposed than others. Hisgrave is immediately behind the Church : that of Hugh Little is just behind old MrKilpatrick's. He was in the employment of Mr Alex. Drysdale, wbo was working with him on4iis farm in Garafraxa at the time. The date of the two last mentioned melancholy events I am ignorant of. The word 'Byd' on the stone eredled by the late Dr Gordon of Arthur to the memory of his wife & child, may be a family motto, corresponding to the old '' Byd(in(f^ pr 'abidinij;'. INTRODUCTORY AND EXPLANATORY. An Altar Tombstone atthebackofthe Church, covering the remains of the hite Mr John Watt, hisfather, and other re- latives — is the only one on which armorial bearings are re- presented. To such as are familiar with Heraldic language, thefollowingdescription will be intelligible: — 'Qiiarterly, 1st a tower or castle, — 2nd three keys barways, — 3d three arrows barways, — 4th nine stars, four-two-two and one.' Thefirst tobelaid in the Church-yard was a mill-wright James Duncan by name, who died very suddenly in 1 835. Its next occupant was an infant, the first child born in Fergus — named on that account Adam Fergus Allan, — and entitled for the same reason to a village lot ; but destined, by not living over two months, to a better and more lasting inheritance. This is all I think that requires explanation, with regard towhatfoHows. For many years this Bury ing-Ground was almost the only one easily accessible to the settlers round a- bout ; so that the number resting in it, is not to be estimated by the marks of respect to their memory in the tomb-stones ere(5led. Latterly, the Elora or Salem Cemetery, with the Burving-Grounds at the Mc Kee Settlement in Garafraxa, and in Lower-Nichol, — have had their tenants from among the older settlers and their descendants. The associations called up by the records of the Church-yard, are, some very pleasant, others very painful. Of this, all are well aware— ^* Keep on the track, some seem to say, the strait and narrow road: , I It leads through trials oftentimes, but always leads to God. Beware of pitfalls others say, -and snares that line the road: We left the track and wandered on-still farther ofFfrom God. NAMES OF INDIVIDUALS COMMEMORATED. Many of the lots were subdivided in later years, in the part farthest from the Church. 2. MrJ. V/heii the site of a Cliurch was set apart in Fergus for the Presbyterian population, of which almost the whole of the small number of settlers was then composed, — a Burying- Ground was included which was afterwards enlarged to its present size, and enclosed by a stonewall in the year 1850. Previously ithadsimplyapicket-fenceround it, which was constantly needing repair ;but, by sale ofBurying-Ground lots and a grant from the Colonial Committee of the Church of Scotland, the wall was erected at the cost if I remember right, of about $400 : an amount corresponding very nearly to the cost of the iron railing, which was put up in the year 1877 — through the exertions of the Ladies' Aid Society of Saint-Andrew's Church, in front of the Church Edifice. David Smith one of the original settlers, was the mason employed to build the Church-Yard wall. He had been a dy ker in Scotland, and did the work very satisfadlorily ; the WTiIl to this day doing credit to his skill and faithfulness. I am not sure but William Logan had also a hand in the work. From the commencement, that part of the Church- Yard alongside the Eastern boundary was reserved for strangers, and here, a number of the Highlanders who came to Fergus in or about 1 849, were laid then and occasionally since. Holders ofBurying-Ground lots, have on a few occasions, been appealed to for assistance to put the ground in order ; some have done their part, but it has been almost wholly by IT f. llilifl^ ,1 {):, lur.- A AfiV* vvs j-uirf-i :;« BURYING GROUND, WALL, &c. It has never been all that could be desired ; — but, it has never on the other hand, been alto- gether negledled. Since the Belleside Cemetery was opened about twenty years ago, a few of those whose relatives had originally been laid in the old Church-Yard, have had their remains moved there : the lots in the first Burying-Ground had by thattime been all taken up ; and inrecentyears, the number ofinterments has been comparatively small. When those still in life who feel a strong attachment to it, and take a special interest in it, have been laid beside their kindred — the old Church- Yard will probably be entirely disused. On this account it seemed desirable, before inscriptions on the stones marking the resting-places of this & that one, were obliterated, — to get them transcribed, and by means of this give a further opportunity for their preservation, for the satisfa(5lion of those who count the spot sacred, from its association with those who have gone but are not forgotten. A list is prefixed, of those who from time to time took up lots in the Burying-Ground, or, for whom they were taken up by othefs^ In this conne6tion it is necessary to obsei*ve — that several of those who originally held lots, having moved to a distance, transferred their interest to others, or allowed others to make use of part of their ground, — which accounts for names appearing on the stones, which have no place in the list of holders or occupants, as they appear on the Plan,
