ISi ^ Oi IBi T M MONTREAL, US 7 7. i?77 0^) 6^3 f 3 j^ EPORT OF THE Committee. The Cominittiit", ai)poiiit<;d by the Congregation of Unioni&ts from St. Andrew's Church, have already reported verbally to the Congregation, at sever:ii meetings, such transactions as it Bcomed important that tha Congregation should know; and tlxey decire now to present a more formal report with refarence to the aftairs of the Congregation. Your Committee beg to remind you that it is now fourteen months since wc assumed our present position. It is unnecessary to detail the circumstances connected with that event, which will long be fresh in the memory of all. It is to be hoped that, amidst all the painful sacrifices which the wrench from old associations entailed, we shall not soon forget the pleasant relief which wo have experienced in the kindly sympathy and harmony by which all our movements have been happily characterised. Immediately after a-ssumiiig our present position, your Committee endeavoured to make some permanent arrangement by which wo might be able to work usefully together, as wo had done before, in the cause of our Great Master. In their endeavours with a view to such arrangement, your Committee were anxious to keep in view the great principle which led to our present position ; and they sought, accordingly, to recognise, in some practical way, the Union of the Presbyterian Churches in Canada which had just been accomplished. These efforts of your Committee havo been already reported, ami no further reference to them is necessary now. Sinco your Committee last reported, no proposal has been madc'which seemed likely to meet with general acceptance ; and they havo always acted on the understanding that you were averse to any course which could not be adopted by us as a body, but Avould lead to our being scattered among different congregations. Your Committee havo, there- fore, continued to make arrangements for worshipping together and conducting our different congregational operations, as we did at the first Your Committee beg to remind you that at first we had to depend for our services on such occasional su-jply as we could obtain from the clergy of the city, as well as from other ministers ; and your Committee feel that we owe a debt of gratitude to those who, often at considerable inconvenience to thonistlvcB, willingly camo to our assistance at that time. When it became necessary to make some more permanent arrange- ment, your Committee were fortunate in securing the scrviceg of the Rev. Mr. Doudict ; and they believe they express the universal feeling when they congratulate the Congregation on having made an arrangement of fiuch a satisfactory character. As an ordained minister, Mr, Doudiet ha* been able to perform, when required, all the functions of a pastor ; and It must have been a special gratification to us all that, since he cam^ among us, we have twice had the privilege of enjoying the Holy Com- munion together. Your Committee beg to remind you that, since we began our servicer, the Psalmody has been superintended by Mr, Lewis, who has acted as Organist, Few know the trouble and inconvenience to which he has put himself, in attending to this important part of our service ; and your Committee oousider that it is our duty to make this special recognition of his valuable and willing services. Your Committee are also happy to acknowledge that wo are further indebted to several other members of the Congregation, who have voluntarily acted as a choir for the improve- uient of our Service of Praise. With regard to the various organizations for Christian work iu con- nection with the Congregation, separate reports will be presented ; and your Committee have much pleasure in directing attention to the grati- fying character of the statements which they contain. The Sunday School is, when compared with the number of the Congregation, one of the largest, and, in respect of its teachers, one of the most efficiently or[uipped in the city. Your Committee have reason to believe that much good is being accomplished among the yoiiog by means of our Sunday School ; and they feel that, for the success of this important work, wo are indebted to Mr, Morris' long experience as a Superintendent, and the staff of experienced teachers by whom he has been supported. The reports from our Young Men's and our Young Women's Associations will also be found to be of a gratitying nature, A financial statement is submitted, from whioh it will be seen that, after providing for all our wants, meeting all oiir liabilities, and contri- buting the sums requested from us by the Presbytery for the various schemes of the Church, we have been able to purchase the organ used in our service, and to retain a balance of $I9j,31 in our favour. Through the agency of two members of the Young Women's Association, an extra sum of $100.00 was subscribed by the Congregation, and presented to Mr. Doudiet on New Year's Day morning, with expressions of esteem and best wishes for his welfare. Your Committee are pleased to observe that, notv/ithstanding the discouragements of our present position and prospects, our numbers have evidently not dimini.l^cd. The average attendance on Sunday is as good ns a the beginning ; and at last Communion tlie number of those wliu 8at down at the table of the Lord was seventy-two. of whom six were new communicants, and two who recently came to us from another con- gregatton. With regard to our future, your Committee can at present recommend only tlmt we adhere to the course which we have hitherto adopted. Your Committee fully sympathise with you in the many inconveniences and discomforts connected with our position; but they leel that any other course just now would prolablv defeat the end lor which we have made our sacrifices in the past. All which is leRpoctfnlly submitted. On liehalf of the Committee, J. CLARK MUHRAV, Convener. MoKTREAi,, P'ebruary, 1877. STATEMENT. Unionists from ^t. ^ndrew's pnuRcH. * STIPKNl) AND GENERAL EUND. It read as follows : — " New Ukion Sunday School. " Mr. Morris and the Union teachers who have loft St, Andrew's <' Church will commence a Sunday School in the Natural History Society " Eooms, University Street, on Sunday, the 12th inst., at three o'clock. «' All interested arc invited to send their children." At the hour named the teachers ^/ent to the appointed place, not knowing whether there would he few or many scholars present, but con- scious of being in the path of duty, and determined to work for the T.iaster if opportunity offered. To their surprise and joy no less a number than 67 scholars enrolled themselves as members of the school, and this number within a short time increased to 135, of whom 101 were connected with St. Andrew's Church or school. Fourteen gentlemen and twelve ladies (twenty-six in all) offered themselves as teachers and officers of the school. The whole of these belonged to St. Andrew's Church, and twenty- two were teachers in St. Andrew's Sunday School. On the 20th of December a teachers' meeting was held, at which Mr. John L, Morris was unanimously elected Superintendent of the new school ; Mr. David Fraser, Secretary; and Mr. Walter Roach, Treasurer. From that time until now the work of the school has been carried on enthusiast'cally and energetically, and the Superintendent and teachers have had the most encouraging support and assistance from the congre- gation generally. A member immediately volunteered a most generous gift of $50 towards purchasing a library, and a number of other contributions were spon- taneously sent in, enabling the teachers to offer to the scholars one of the Lest libmiies in the city in i)roportinn to th« .size of the school The number of books is now 2C6. On the 2Rth January, 1870, the first Annual Festival was h.-Id an.l was largely attended by parents and scholiuH. In the March number of the Presbyterian Record there was published an appeal to Sabbath School children and teachers, to join in raising a «um of money as a thank offering for Presbyterian Union, in answer t.» which, this school had the honour of being the first to respond, and at tlu- mass meeting of Presbyterian Sunday Schools, beld in St. Pauls Church on the 26th of June, at which thorc Aveio present over 1,500 children handed in $25 as its contribution to tlio thank ollcring. The school was closed daring the summer months. In the month of .September the scholars were entertained at a most enjoyable pic-nic on the Mount Royal Park. The amount contributed by the congregation for the general expenses of the school, Including festival, pic-nic and library funds, was $275.89, of which there has been expended $273.18, loavin- a balance on hand of $2 . 7 1 . During last winter the Association, assisted by the Young Men's Society, arranged for a Congregational Co»iversazione and Sabbath School Festival, both of which gave great satisfaction. The Association also responded to an appeal from the Industrial Rooms Committee by sending contributions of fancy work to their annual bazaar; and two of the members collected for the Hervcy Institute, in the district of the city allotted to them, the sum, of $68.00. A Committee of the Association a!oO visited among the poor, in connection with the Out-door Relief of the city, their visits extending over some weeks. The prayer meetings were held on the first Wednesday of every month, and during the greater part of last winter subjects were selected from week to w^ek for discussion. The Association sustained a great loss in the death of Mrs. Stanton, whose unwearying interest in all its objects can never be forgotten. Upon the occasion of the marriage of the President, Mrs. Beve-idge, H resolution was passed wishing her every happiness in her new sphere, but expressive of the regret felt by the members that they would no longer have the benefit of her counsel and assistance.
