The books purch.i8cd for, or presented to, this Library, shall be inalienable for any purpose whatsoever, excepting in the case of duplicates, which may be sold, and the proceeds ^plied to the purchase of othei works. II. Such books only shall be purchased as are of general and permanent interest. III. The fee for the use of the Library shall be 10«. a year, payable to the Librarian half-yearly in advance. IV. The Library shall be open at such times as the number of members using the same may warrant, in the following ratio : — For the present, on Tuesday evenings, from seven to ten o'clock. As soon as the fees amount to 25/., or fifty subscribers at 10«. each, on Tut^day and Friday evenings, from six to ten o'clock. As soon as one hundred members subscribe, every evening from six to ten o'clock. As soon as two hundred members subscribe, every day from three to ten o'clock, P. M. And whenever the fees may amount to 150/., every day from nine, A. M., to ten, P. M. V. The Library shall be divided into books of reference and circulation, the latter only to be taken away for perusal. VI. A list shall be kept, in which persons may write the names of books they may wish added to the Library, for the consideration of the Council. VII. No person shall be entitled to the privileges of the Library without producing (when required) his ticket to the Athenaeum for the current year, nor unless all fees and fines be paid as soon as due. VIII. No book to be taken out of the Library, exceeding the value of 10*. currency, unless a deposit be left with the Librarian to its value over that sum, as entered in iiaa /" Librarian's book, under the direction of the Council ; and not more than one volume W be taken out at a time. ,' IX. No person shall be permitted to retain any book in his possession for more th'an one week for a 24rao. or sinaller volume, fourteen days for a 12mo., or twenty-one days for any larger size, on penalty of a fine of one halfpenny for each day it shall be so detained. — The period for keeping new books to be limited by the Council, according to the demand for their use. X. All books to be returned to the Library without exception, on the second Tuesday in December, for the purpose of arrangement and inspection; subscribers detaining books after that period, to be liable to a fine of 'It. 6d. No book to be issued during the remainder of the month, on any account whatever. XI. Any person losing a book, or returning a book to the Library in a damaged or imperfect condition, to pay for the same, or make good such damage, at the discretion of the Council. XII. Any person lending a book out of his own house or family, to be liable to a fine of 2t. Gd., and on repetition, to be deprived of the privileges of the Library. XIII. The Librarian to make a monthly return to the Council, of all infringements against the rules of the Library ; and to be responsible for all damage and loss not so returned, or accounted for. XIV. The magazines and periodicals not to be issued until the following nimbers have been received, nor afterwards for more than three days at a time, under the same penalty as in section IX., excepting that persons may have the privUege of taking away a maga- line within a quarter of an hour before the closing the Library, to be returned within a quarter of an hour of the next opening the Library, under a penalty of 7i
