PREFACE. The want of Tables containing rates for the Valuation of Debentures, Stocks, Mortgages, Deferred Payments, days, as in the above example, there will be a difference in the result as compared with the tables proportionate to the magnitude of the sum. To avoid repetition it may be stated that when the true ralue is required on any day of the year, the formula used in Example 2 will apply to all calculations in which interest is to be payable yearly and the formula in Example 3, to all in which interest is payable half yearly. In calculating the value of interest-bearing debentures it is customary to value accrued interest (if any), at par. This is erroneous, for it is manifest that the accrued interest should be of the same relative value as the balance of the aeeurity. In cases where the debentures are sold at a premium the advantage is to the kmgf, and when sold at a discount the tfQilt derives the benefit Emmph 4.— -Required the value of 39 half yearly instalments of $1,000 each the finit due 6 months hence, to yield interest at 4| % half yearly. To find the value of a deferred annuity — from the value of the annuitj' for the whole terra, that is from the present until the last i)ayment becomes due, deduct the value for the term the payments are deferred.
