CONDITIONS OF FREE GRANT LOCATIONS ON COLONIZA- TION ROADS. 1st. The locatee is to procecii lo and oceiqn at once the land assigned to him. Should he mit do so wilhiji one month of the date of his ticket, or shoidd lie abandon the land after having been placed on it, he will be considered its having lost all claim to receive the land. 2nd. He is lequired to cleur and place under crop twelve noes of the land located within lour year- of the date oi his ticket, to build a house, and to reside on the land until his settlement duty is per- formed. When this is completed he is entitled to his patent. 'PI 10 3rd. If under the necessity of being temporarily abesnt from his loca- tion, he will apply to the resident agent, stating the length of his intended absence, and the reason for it, which will be: entered on the agent's book, if the reasons for absence seem sufficient. Should he absent himself without permission to do so, or should he remain away longer than authorised, he will be considered as having for- feited his location. -.^ 4th. Any assignment of or attempt to assign the ticket or location, without the previous knowledge and approval of the agent, will also be considered as a forfeiture of all right in the locatee or assignee. 5th. In all cases of abandoment of location, the located land \vill be con- sidered immediately open for new location or sale. 6th. No timber to be cut previous to the issuing of Letters Patent, ex- cept for clearing of the land, fuel, buildings and fences— all thnber cut contrary to these conditions will be dealt with as timber cut in trespass — moreover these locations are subject to the licenses to cut timber actually in force. No location will be allowed for more than 100 acres to one individual. t i. 'h. Note. — The system of Free Grants in this Province (with tl»e exceptioD of" grants not exceeding ten acres for schools, town hall etc, and grants not exceeding 50 acres for places of public worship, and one hundred acres for model or industrial farms) is confined by biw to land set apart for that purpose on each side of the colonization roads mentioned in the fore- going statement. 11 RESUME OF THE MINING LAW OF THE PROVINCE OF QUEBEC, ENTITLED " Thi Quebec General Mining Act of 1880," 43 & 44 Vict., Chap. 12. The chief provisions are : — 1. The declaration of ownership by the Crown and reserve of all mines not specially granted. Sec. 3. 2. For the sale of mining rights on patented and seignioral lands and on unpatented lands acquired for agricultural purposes. Sees. 4 to 12. 3. For imposition of Royalty under Order in Council if deemed ad- visable. Sees. 13 & 52. 4. For granting licenses U) mine for gold or silver on public lands and on conceded portions of Seigniory Rigaud, Vaudreuil, ond other private lands. Sees. 14, 50, et seq. 5. For the sale of lands as mining locations. Sec. 23, et seq. C. For imposition of penalties for contravention of Act. Sec. 23, e^s^;^. Under this Act parties holding Letters Patent for lands granted for agricultural purposes nuiy aaiuire the right to work any mines of gold or silver thereon, withoutlicen.se, by paying the CiHumissioner of Crown Lands a sum sufliciont to make up, with the amount paid before issue of patent, the price oi two dollars per acre. In the case of "free grants" the whole price of two (lollurs i)er acre must be [)aid. Ce)m1aires in the seig- niories \.i which the Crown holds mining rights may aapure these rights by paying one dollar and a half per acre for the whole of their land or at least one hundred acres; and the seignior or proi)rietorof the nnccmced- ed portion of a seigniory may do the same on l)aying two dollars per acre ; the tixtentover which such rights can be ac([uired being, however, limited to tour hundred ai-res, or, in special cases, eight hundred acres. If a nnne of any kind be discovered and worked on bind sold for set- tlement but not patented, the settlement duties not being performed the sale may be cancelled, unless the land be paid for in full as a mining location. Sec. 12. Mining locations, wliich may be of any extent up to (bur hundred acres or in special cases eight hundret= nores, may be acipilred by addressing a letter to the Commissioner of Cruwn Lands, s[)ecilying tin; h)t or h)ts re- quired, and transmitting at the same time — i^ \'i' r i II ; 12 1. The full price of the location at the rate oi'Jive dollars per acre, if it is to be mined ^ov phosphate of lime (this price fixed hy O. C. of 0th April, 1883.); two dollars per acre, if to be mined ^or gold or silver, (price its per Quebec General Mining Act 1880.); two dollars per acre, if to be mined 'Cov anhesiofi, or ochres, (price fixed by 0. C. of 80 Oct. 1882.); one doll (ir per acre, iftol)e mined for inferior metals or other minerals, or deposits of any substance of appreciable value (price as per Quebec General Mining Act of 1880). 2. A specimen of the mineral for which the land is to be worked, with an affidiivit identilving it as having been taken from the land ap])lied for. In ad(!itiby repealed, and section 16 of the act 41 Vict. chap. 4 IS again ni 2. The provisions ot section 18, 15, 18, and 19 of the "Phosphate Mines Act," relating to the imposition of a duty of fifty cents per ton upon the output of phosphate, are suspended and shall not have force and effect until they shall have been again put into force by order of the Lieutenant Governor in Council. o. The Twelfth Section of the said act is repealed and replaced bv the following : *^ " 12. The Commissioner of Crown Lands may from time to time, and as otten as circumstances may require, offer and put up for sale 'such number of phos[)iinte lots as he may deem proper. No such land shall be sold while under or subject to "tim- ber license," 2nd. No person shall be allowed to purchase moi-e than lifty ac- res, or thereabouts, of such land, whether the whole, half, quarter or other aliquot part of a lot. 3rd. Such permission shall be given only to the head of a fam" ily or household, who is not already pi-oprietor of a wood lot pur- chased from the Crown. 4th. No person shall be allowed to purchase any such wood lot situated more than twenty-five miles from his residence. 5th.
