 SiB,— Some time ago repre.sentations were made to this Department to the effec 
 that the drug known us Black Antinuiny was grossly adulterated. In consequence o 
 tliJ!*, a collection of 77 fianiples was made durin}{ March, April and May of this year 
 and the following report >;ives the results of their examination ; and it will lie seei 
 that the charges of ijross adulteration are fully su>tained. The following synopsi 
 gives these results in hrief :

 lllack Antimony is not defined by the British Pharmacopoeia ; hut the purifie( 
 sulphide is defined as Antimonium Nigrum Purificatum. This is the crude sulphidi 
 separated from siliceous niaterial and from ar.<<enical compounds. 
 
 Neither is Black Antimony fouiul in the United States Pharmacopoeia, since 1890 
 In thfi seventh decennial revision of the U.S.P. it is thus deserihtKl : — 
 
 " Jilative Antimony Sulphide, purified by fusion, and as free from arsenic a 
 possible." 
 
 Under the designated tests it is required to dissolve in hydrochloric acid, withou 
 leaving more than one ( 1 ) per cent of residue. The United States National IHspen 
 satory, 5th Edition, p. 2-3, describes it as dissolving in 10 parts of hydrochloric acid 
 without leaving more than 1 per cent of residue. 
 
 Finlay Dun (Veterinary Medicines, 9th Edition, p. 246), says :— "The sulphide 
 or stibnite, the most abundant ore of antimony, when puriflwl by fusion, occurs ii 
 dark-grey, metallic, heavy brittle cakes, or as a heavy grey black, crystalline powder 
 ilevoid of odour and taste, insoluble in water, and known as black, or crude antimony.

 From what I have gaid, it in apparont that no fxact atamlurrl of purity cxintB for 
 I'le. It is, however, <|uitc> certain that it should Im eNKCiitially the -ulphide of 
 y, known ax stibnite ; and I have no hpsitalioii in deHcribinj,' the samplef* 
 fxainined as adulu-raUvl when they contain no antimony whatever. Tliis is the case 
 with 21 H>mples, or 1'" per cent of the entire collection. Where foreign matter to tho 
 extent of nearly .JO per cent ii prcwnt, I have dcclaicl tlia sanipU's to lietwry impure : 
 and wiiere more than 5 per cent of matters insoluble in hydrochloric acid is found, m 
 iiiipnri^. 
 
 It i^i quite evident that many of the adulterated Niimples, consisting as they do of 
 metallic iron, silica and carlwn (graphite) have had an origin such as to preclude the 
 possibility of any honestly misUken intent ; and are entirely and knowingly frauds, 
 not necos»arily known as such to the immetliate vendor, but certainly known to the 
 original prn<lucer.
