After wishing our agricultu- ral friends " A happy New- Year," we wish to offer them a few hints, which we trust they will receive with kind- ness, and shall then try to give them such scraps of informa- tion on the subjoct of agricul- ture as our limits and circum- stances will allow. Agriculture is considered as the glory of the country. Com- merce we may pursue ; but still, commerce is only the younger sister of agriculture, and must be supported and protected by her. Commerce too, depends upon the fashions of the times, and upon the dis- position of other nations. — Net so with agriculture, we iriay be sovereign in this, and shall ever find it the most sure source of strength, of wealth, and civil liberty. The very earth too, seems to smile in gratitude upon the attention paid to agriculture ; for she not only repays the husband- m'^n sixty-fold, but gives him health, vigour and strength. ( ■■ '<■ r. The most approved mode of preparing wheat, rye, oats or barley, is to soak it from 12 to 14 hours in a strong brine, having salt-petre in it, and imr. cdiately before sow- ing, to mix with it enough of lime, or wood ashes, to make it so dry that it may be sown evenly. A crop of flax may be greatly increased by mixing with the seed an equal quantity of fine salt, and sowing it. Caterpillars. — Destroy utterly every caterpillar; leave no nest undemolished on your fruit trees. This may be done by burning brimstone under their nests ; by sprinkling ash- es or fine sand on them and the limbs where they ttre, wheii wet, or by putting a mop or wisp of tow on a pole, and brushing their nests well with brine.
