"I have known Dr. Mathews for upwards of twelve months, and he has on several oc- casions attended me professionally, to my entire satisfaction. I have been much brought into contact with him as the Medical Officer of the Hon'ble Hudson's Bay Company, in which capacity he has attended to the needs of a large Indian population ; this duty he per- forms with diligence as well as with much sympathy. No matter at what time of day or night he was called, he was alwavs ready the needy Indian with his squalid surround- ings receiving from him the same care and attention as if he had on an English noble- man. In an experience of thirty years in this country he is, without exception, the most attentive and painstaking medical officer I have seen in it. He is an high-principled, moral. Christian gentleman, and I consider him ex- tremely well qualified for any position where sympathy, gentleness and firmness are requir- ed, combined with more than ordinary skill." JOHN MOOSONEE. Having been almost daily associated with him from our mutual positions, I have had every opportunity of witnessing his energy and zeal, and I have much pleasure in testifying not only to his care and assiduity, but to the uniform kindness and consideration which he has combined, with the attention and skill he has ever displayed in the discharge of the duties of his profession." S,, etc., etc., Assistant Director of the Royal Geological Survey of Canada. [Private.] The Vacancy in Section IV. of the Royal Society. 6'/>.— The deaths of Mr. George Barnston and Mr. Alexander Murray have left a vacancy for at least one new Fellow in Section IV. of the Royal Society. I would respectfully beg to propose Doctor Percy Mathews, Medical Officer to the Hon'ble Hudson's Bay Com- pany, and now a resident at Fort York, as a fit and proper person for election to the vacant Fellowship. I have known Dr. Mathews per- sonally for seven years. He is a gentleman of high scientific capabilities, an ardent, prac- tical student of Nature, more especially of Zoology, and is a great collector of specimens, of which he has already sent a large number to the Museum of the Geological and Natural History Survey. Professionally he has proved himself to be a skillful and competent physi- clan and surgeon. He is an Englishman, about thirty years of age, and is connected with well - kriown scientific men. Having come directly from England to York, he has heretofore hod opportunities of becoming personally acquainted with only a few of the people of this country; but among this num- ber reference might be made to His Lordship the Bishop of Moosonee, the Ven'ble Arch- deacon Kirkby, D. D., Christ's Church, Brook- lyn, New York; Chief Factor Joseph Fortescue of the Hon'ble Hudson's Bay Co's Service, Hamilton Jukes, Esq., C. E., Otto J. Klotz,' D.T.S., C.E., President of the Dominion Land Surveyor's Association, and Lieut. Gordon, R. N., Commander of the Hudson's Bay Ex- peditions of 1884, 1885 and 1886. The officers of the Hon'ble Hudson's Bay Company have, as a class, always taken a deep interest in Nafnrnl w;cf^,-,r ^,>^ *u.- xt . •••'/ ="'-' tuc i\acurai sciences generally, and they have cordially assisted all scientific men in their researches in the^ northern regions. The writings of Sir A .-A Alexander Mackenzie, Samuel Hearne, Sir John Richardson, Sir John Franklin, Sir George Back, Gen'l Sir Henry Lefroy, Dr. Hector, etc., and the reports of various offi- cers of the Smithsonian Institution and the Geological Survey, as well as of other investi- gators, bear witness to these facts. They have also done much independently to advance science by furnishing for many years valu- able information and large quantities of fine specimens to the United States National Mu- seum, and to various institutions in Great Britain. It was considered proper to have in our ranks, in the person of the late lamented Mr. Barnston, a connecting link between the Royal Society and this important body of in- telligent men, who are scattered so widely over the great northern wilds of Canada; and now that he has gone, his place might be very appropriately filled by Dr. Mathews, who would be of much service to the Society, and who is personally so well deserving of the honor. His election would no doubt be re- garded as a continuation of the compliment to the Service generally, and it would be a graceful recognition by the Society of the de- sire which the Company's officers have always manifested to aid in the advancement of science. For the above, among other reasons, I would beg to solicit your support for Doc- tor Mathews. Yours respectfully, ROBT. BELL, F R. S. Herewith I beg to send you a copy of a pa- per by Dr. Mathews, on " Diseases among the Indians," which was read before the Medico- Chirurgical Society of Montreal, of which he is ati Honorary Member. Ottawa, May, 1885. The Venerable Dr. Kirkby, Archdeacon of York : *• It gives me very great pleasure to bear testimony to tlie zeal and kindness of Dr. Mathews, in his professional duties here, as well as to the general success that has attend- ed his treatment of the diseases brought un- der his care.'* W. W. KIRKBY, D. D., Archdeacon of York, now of Brooklyn, August, 1879. New York. MuRDOCK Matheson. Chief Trader of the Honble Iludson^s Bay Company's Service : "■ This is to certify that Dr. Percy Mathews has served the Hudson's Bay Company for eight years, in the capacity of Medical Officer, two of which he has been with me, and, as far as I am able to judge, I consider him a very efficient member of his profession." M. MATHESON, For Hudson's Bay Company. York Factory, 14th September, 1886. > The Rkv. Joseph Lofthouse, C. M. S. : "Having been personally acquainted with Dr. Mathews during the past three years, and in frequent contact with him in his profes- sional duties amongst the residents of York • Factory, both European and Indian, I have great pleasure in testifying to the universal kindness, generosity, and ability displayed by him in cases brought under my immediate notice. To myself and in my work among the In- dians, he has ever been a most ready and willing helper." J. LOFTHOUSE, York Factory, C. M. S. Missionary. July 17th, 1886. Captain Hawes, Hudson's Bay Company s ship ''Cam Owen:' *'I have known Dr. Mathews for more than eight years. He has once made a voyage with me,^ in 1878, as Medical Officer of 'the Hud- son's Bay Company's ship Ocean Nymph ; and I have known him in the intc / d as Medical Officer at the Port of York, where he year by year attended the ship's crews. In 1883, being frozen into the north of Hudson's Bay, Dr. Mathews walked upwards of 400 miles in snow-shoes, in the depth of the Arctic winter, to the relief of my crew, who were suffering from scurvy. In 1886, being shipwrecked in Hudson's Bay, Dr. Mathews accompanied me and my crew in a long and arduous journey from Hudson's Bay to Winnipeg. : 8 From an eight years' varied experience of Dr. Mathews, I have fromed a very high opin- ion of him; he is patient under dimculty, kind, gentle and attentive to his sici<— a good doc- tor and a gentleman." [Translation.] /^/w// ///jf India'ns of the York District of the Hon hie Hudson's Bay Company s Service. Dear Doctor : This is to let you know that we will all be very sorry when you leave us. For all the years you have been here, you have helped us in sickness. We are all very thankful to you for all your kindness to us in helping us all, and also for all you have done for our sick, hungry, or our starving. We are sure no other Doctor ever will do so much for us as you have done. We hope that those who are over you will say or even think the same. And, again, that our Lord Jesus Christ will reward you for all your kindness and charity to us. And now hoping that all this will make you think of us, as we will always remember you, dear Doctor.
