By-law to increase the rate of Assessment on
Wild Lands in the Ottawa District for a
limited time, for the purposes therein
mentioned.

The District Council of the District of Ottawa, duly
assembled in auarterly Meeting at the Court House in Lon-
gueil, on the eighth day of February in the year of our Lord
one thousand eight hundred and forty two, and constituted
by virtue and under the authority of a certain Act of the
Parliament of the Province of Canada, passed in the fourth
and fifth years of Her Majesty's reign, intituled « A71 Act to
provide for the better internal Government of tha ' ^mrt of
this Province which formerly constituted the Province of
Upper Ca?iada, by the establishment of Local or 3Innicipal
Authorities therein,'' doth Ordain a.id Enact, and by the
authority of the same, it is hereby Ordained and Enacted as
follows :-—

Whereas it is expedient and necessary to raise and pro-
vide a fund not exceeding the sum of one thousand pounds
in one year, for the period of two years next to come, for
making and improving Roads and Bridges within the said
District ; and it is desirable that the said fund shall be raised
from and out of Assessments upcu Wild or absentee Lands
within the said District.

I. Be it therefore Ordained and Enacted^ and it is
hereby Ordained and Enacted by the authority aforesaid,
that for the purposes of this By-law, the Rates and Assessments
now lawfully imposed upon Lands within the said District
but which by reason of the same remaining unoccupied, or
for other cause, may not be included in the Assessment Roll
of the Township, reputed Township, or place, wherein the
sp.me are respectively situated, shall be and the same are here-
by augmented and increased to the rate or sum of one penny
and one half penny per acre, annually, such augmentation
and increase to begin and take effect from and after the first
day of January last past, and to continue for, and during, and
until the full end and term of two years next thereafter.

II. And be it further Ordained and Enacted by the
authority aforesaid, that the said increased Rate and Assess-
ment shall be levied and collected in the same manner and
under the same provisions, as the said Rate and Assessment,
before being increased as aforesaid, were or might have been
levied and collected.

III. Provided ahoays nevertheless, and it is hereby de-
claimed, that is shall and may be lawful to and for tb >wner and
owners of any lot or parcel of land subjected to the said in-
creased rate, to claim and receive the following abatements
and deductions from such increased rate in the cases follow-
ing, that is to say, an abatement or deduction equal to thirty
three and one third per cent, upon full payments of such in-
creased rate, made within two calendar months next after the
expiration of the year in which the same shall have accrued ;
and an abatement or deduction equal to twenty five per cent
upon full payments of the said increased rate made within

two calendar mouths, next after the expiration of the two
years in which the same shall have accrued and remained un-
paid : But it is hereby declared that after the expiration of the
period herein above last mentioned, no abatement or deduction
whatever can or may be lawfully claimed or allowed from the
said increased rate.

IV. And be it further Ordained and Enacted by the
dnthority aforesaid^ that two third parts of the said increased
Kate and Assessment shall be laid out and expended on Roads
and Bridges in the several Townships within which the same
shall be respectively raised : And for that end, that all collec-
tions received by the Treasurer of the Ottawa District, on
account of the said increased rate, shall be entered by him in
separate accounts, to be kept in the name of each Township
for that purpose.
