 Sib, — The accompanying report has to do with sixty-five (65) samples purchastO 
 as Tincture of Ginger, between Septi.mber and December of last year. 
 
 This tincture is a solution of the oloo-resin of ginger in strong alcohol. Tlie 
 British Pharmacopoeia prescribes alcohol of 90 per cent; that of the United States, 
 .'ilcohol of 94 9 per cent, both b»- volume. TTnless strong alcohol is employed, the olcd- 
 resin of ginger is not obtained in solution. 
 
 Experimental work recorded in Bulletin No. 110, demonstrated that the resins in 
 solution, from different varieties of ginger, may vary from 0-260 per cent, (weight) tu 
 (>-499 por cent. Moor (Suggested Stondards, p. 11,0) quotes many authorities who find 
 from 0-290 to 680 per cent. SiRgins (The National Vispensatorfi) finds from 0-4S(> 
 to 700 iier cent. T. BBrchiy (I'linrm. Jour., Dwember, 1898) proposes 0-400 per cent 
 oleo-rcsin as a standard below which a satisfactory tincture should jiot bo recognized. 
 
 The specific gravity of the tincture should lie between 0-835 and 0-840. The loss 
 of alcohol in mi'king the tincture need not exceed one per cent. (See Bulletin 110, 
 p. 13). 
 
 Reasonable allowance must bo made for variation due to the natural differoiicMs 
 found in eommercial ginger, for losses in manufacture, and in dis'iK'iisiiig. With tliiso 
 considerations in mind I would suttgost the following limits: — 
 
 Siiecific gravity of tincture 0-8.30 to 0-850 
 
 .Meoliol content (vol. p.c.) mOi) f 90 00 + 
 
 Oleo-resins, per cent 0-250 w 0-700 
 
 The limits sugge.-<tcd allow n very wide margin, and it is hoped that experience 
 will justify a closer approximation to a definite standard. Our experience of this 
 article as found on the Canadian market is restricted to reports contained in Bulletins 
 Nos. 34, 110, 179, and the present report.
