T SHE American tourist arriving at the border has usually proceeded up into the Highlands of Ontario or down the St. Lawrence River, while others have rushed through Canada without even thinking of the vast limitless tracks of navig- able waters and scenerj' of endless variety that many of the island water courses hold out to the lover of nature. But we would now direct his attention to a few • ' the points on the Canadian shores of that larg . s-ater, Lake Huron, and among which we '.'ose Goderich. The ^..pi.larity of this resort has become so marked that during the past year mammoth hotels have been erected at a cost of thousands of dollars to accommodate the ever-increasing travel which is finding its way into the.se parts. As a grand tour this northern country offers a fresh and varied trip through the landscape beauties of Ontario, and has but to be better known to tempt from the well-known ways of travel the wayfarer in .search of new scenes, fresh air and health. Harbor Park, Goderich. GODKRICII ON THK The great attractions in this district appeal to families and those desiring rest and recreation in the qnietude of a lakeside town or village. The bathing lieach is perfect, sandy nnd quiet safe for children, the air is pure and full of ozone, the lx)ating is capital, and in most of the places good fishing may be had. Beautiful countr>- drives are a diversion that can be indulged in, and perfect rest and quietne.ss can be secure' . If the tourist prefers seclusion, comfortable furnished summer cottage;; are to be had at reason- able rates. To those who do not wish to incur the expense of a visit to the more fashionable resorts, no place Harbor and River, Goderich, Ont. offers a more attractive claim for summer rest and healthful sojourn than on the shores of Lake Huron. Canada's summer climate is the admiration of the world ; and the summer breezes that come over the breast of the blue Lake Huron are the mes.sengers of health, and refreshing to all who are fanned by them. Nature has done much to render Goderich a most attractive spot, and so has the hand of man. It stands 120 feet above the level of the lake, with two sides falling abruptly toward the lake and the river. Perfect drainage is thus afforded, and the municipal authorities are taking advantage of it, the result being a perfect system of sewerage, which carries off SHORB UF LAKE HWON the watei in an hour or two after the rain has ceased to fall. It has lieen known to rain all ni^ht in Goderich, and a few hours after sunrise not a vestiRc of the night's downpour aiuld \ye seen by the suninter visitor who, perhaps, with slipperetl feet lounged easily around the grounds of his hotel, «>r along the broad streets of the smiling town. Wcxxlen sidewalks are not needed in Goderich. Mud is an unknown quantity, owing to natural and applie<l drainage, and a system of pavement prevails. The .site of the town was carefully cho.sen and laid out on a plan peculiar and admirable. Occupy- ing a plateau overlooking the lake, and gently .sloping toward the latter, the situation is one i ! Su-iset on I^-tke Huron. that has long commanded admiration. The county court house, a hand.some stone structure, .stands in the centre of the town and is encircletl with a lieautiful park, in which flowers of every hue. shrubs of various kinds and handsome shade trees abound, faced with many of the principal places of business, which encompass the park on all sides. A park surrounded by business blocks is a sight not often seen. The places of business around this square, or octagon, have a frontage of al)out a third of a mile. The roadway between Court House Park and the stores is wide and level, and is a most popular carriage drive, and equally jxjpular with riders of the wheel. Springing from tli's common noDRRICH ON TH* Vifw from McncMrtutiK I'«rk. center — the eml)o\vere<l Court House — run eight streets, crossed at inter\als in a fashion to suggest a spider -'eb. All the streets are much wider than the ordinary, and long avenues of the choicest shade trees, of which the umbrageous majile and the shajx-'ly horse ch-v.-tnut are the most plentiful, line their sides. The vista looking up or down North vStreet, through the dense foliage, is one calculated to ravish the gaze of the lover of sylvan beauty. What is kno'.\n is the Harlx)r Park is several acres planteci »vith sliade and fruit trees, conmiandin^' a grand view of the harbor and of the great lake stretching Ijeyond. Here are seats for those who frequent its inviting quarters, and on the slojx; of the hill is many a coy nook, emlxnvered by cedars, where picnickers can enjoy a quiet time ' ' Far from the madding crowd's ignoble strife" while yet on the town side of the comnuKlious harlwr. The park is the favorite resort of the excursion parties that throng Goderich, and the music of bands is often heard during the summer months. "The Wheelmen's Paradise" is the name now tmiversally 1)estowed ujxjn Goderich by the cycling pres.s. In the town, and for miles around it, are what are acknowledged to be the finest runs for wheelmen in the world. The roads are well graveled, thoro- hly drained, and present a surface that del .n the man who sits on the saddle of a fleet, well- conditioned bicycle. HHORR 'IF LA KB II IP. A lar^e new summer hotel was c«>niplete<l last year, and is known as the Hotel (f(Hlerich. with accomnnKiation for 200 quests. This resort has been erected at an outlay of thousands of dollars, and is situated on the shore of the lake at an elevation of alnn fv, feet, and has a ko<x1 road down ti> the niagnif.oem l)each, which is to Ik; found all alouj? the shore .u this ]K)int. Hathers can wade out t .t.'y deptli and bath hou.ses -'•e provide<l for d. 'jiuR and dres-siuK. The hotei is within ten minutes' walk of the Grand Trunk Railway Station. Another very pleasant and comfortable hostelry is The MencsetuuK, a re.sort situated on the opposite The MencMluiiK. Goderich, Ont. GODBRICH ON THE side of the harbor, at a distance of one mile. This resort is situated in the heart of a well-wooded district, and has all the attributes of a well-run establishment, and offers quietude to those looking for rest and health. The Menesetung has acconi niodation for loo guests, and the surroundings are really beautiful. Goderich is situated at such a high altitude, and the climauc conditions are of such a nature that the atmosphere is a sure panacea for hay-fever. The amusements are various and the hotel is supplied with modem conveniences. The Point Farm, Goderich, Ont. Another ver\- popular summer resort at Goderich is "The Point Farm," situated about four miles north of the town, with accommodation for 200 guests. This hotel is delightfully located on a high bluff over- looking Lake Huron, with extensive views of the surrounding country. As far as possible, the hand of man has not disturbed the natural beauties in the vicinity, and seated in one of the quaint summer houses, within sound of the music of the surf, it does not require a vivid imagination to think one's self out of the bounds of civilization. An Artesian Well giving pure mineral water, has been sunk to a depth of 200 feet ; there are modern sanitarj' arrangements, long-di.stance telephone, etc. Carriage meets all trains and boats. SHORB OF LAKE BUROM Porter's has become a centre for tourists — light reading of a hight order, art novelties, stationery of an immensely varied order, souvenirs, etc. Mr. Porter has met with appreciation of an effort to meet the requirements of the summer visitors. Another point of interest is Hotlgens Bros, display of Furs ; one does not expect to see such goods in Goderich, and the visitor evidently enjoys the surprise. Still another, is Kelly's Jewellery Store ; it has recently been re-motlelled and presents a very fine appearance, outside of the larger cities, you will find few of its class in Canada. A very choice as.sortment of goods is a.- ■ 'ed including a large and varied a.ssortment of souvenirs, there is a special department for watch repairing, in which line Mr. Kelly has attained an excellent reputation. J. B. Hawkins, Hardware Store, where the fisher- man or the hunter can have his wants supplied — is also a fine establishment. Gundrj- Bros. Livery, of which we show a cut elsewhere, is equipped with every sort of rig and excellent horses ; they meet all boats and trains, transfer baggage, etc. The Confectionery and Ice Cream Parlors of J. J. Edward, is another point of interest, and is thronged with lovers of good things. The illustrations in this folder are from photos furnished by R. R. Sallows, of Goderich. F. J.
