JAMES'S CLUB " of Montreal, with a limited membership of 1,000. 2. Politics and religious questions of politics and every description shall be absolutely excluded from the objects of the Club. 3. Each candidate for admission shall Candidate! be proposed by one member, and seconded by another by a proposal in writing, to be inserted in the book of Candidates, and signed by both mover and seconder ; and shall be balloted for at any ballot which may take place after the lapse of one week from the time of such proposal, ^ provided the name of the Candidate and his proposer and seconder have been posted in the cofFee-roora, under the hand of the Secretary, at least one week before the day of ballot. All Entrance Fees and Annual Subscriptions shall be paid either to the Treasurer personally or at the Club. 11. Any Member who may bo absent from the Dominion of Canada during the whole period for which the Annual Sub- scription is payable may be considered as a supernumerary member, and be ex- empted from the subscription during the continuance of such absence ; but any Member availing himself of this indul- gence must notify the same by letter to the Secretary, who shall insert his name in the book of Supernumerary Members. Any such member shall be re-admitted to all his privileges upon his return being notified in writing to the Secretary, and such notification be given within one month of his return to Canada, and upon payment of his subscription for the then current year ; and failing in such notitica- tion and payment, such member shall be considered as having withdrawn himself from the Club. Should his return be only temporary, Name he may, with the consent of the Com- mittee, be admitted to the privileges of the Club on payment of five dollars for each month of his residency in Canada, but the aggregate payments are not to exceed the xinnual Contribution of ordi- nary membership. 12. JAMES'S CLUB. \ -o- COMMITTEE. The ordinary weekly meetings will be held every Wednesday, at five o'clock p.m., at which three shall form a quorum. In the absence of the duly appointed Chairman, a Chairman for the day will be first elected, and the minutes of the last meeting having been read, the question will be put by the Chairman '* that they ha confirmed." If the minutes be objected to by a majority of the members present, the particular subject ob- jected to will be reserved for consideration, either at an extraordinary meeting or at the next ordii - ary meeting, as may be decided upon, and, if not objected to then, the Chairman will affix his sig- nature thereto. After the disposal of the minutes of the pre- vious meeting, all such matters as require the consideration of the Committee will be brought before them, discussed and decided upon. For the dispatch of business, the Committee will at each weekly meeting appoint two of their ■ -.jBsa&ss^s .,..«^' -WSff*^ ! 48 number, to be called the " Active Committee," to superintend the ordinary business of the Club, and submit' a weekly report of their proceedings. SECRETARY AND MANAGER. As M m-iger, he will have the general control and superintendence of the establishment, under the Coiiiinittee. As S v^retarv, he will attend all meetinfjs of the Coiamittee and Active Committee, note their resolutions, and minute them in the books of their proceedings. In all his written official communications, he will state expressly that they are made by direc- tion of the Committee. Besides his attendance upon the Committee, he will conduct the official correspondence of the Club, draw up Reports, keep regular accounts of all the financial concerns of the Club, an account of the wine and other stores in the Stock Cellars of the Club, an account with the Butler and Housekeeper for wines and stores delivered for the c )nsumption of members and for the use of the establishment ; examine the accounts of the Tra lesmen previously to their being submit- ted for li >al adjustment, and will pay the same when pasr^nl by the Committee. r'^MfSfZ ' 4.) He will ascertain that all the Goods and Pro- visions delivered are in strict accordan^^with the orders given, and correctly charged in the Trades- men's books, and will sign such books. ' He will attend to all communications, receive information upon all subjects connected with the business of the Club, and particularly all matters relating to the Members thereof. He will be charged with any deficiency that may occur in the stock of Wines, Liquors, Cigars, &c., placed in his custody. COOK The Cook will have the immediate direction of the Kitchen Department, and of the Assistants therein as far as concerns the pvirformance of their duties ; and will prepare the daily Bill of Fare, with the concurrence of the Manager, keep- ing all orders for the issue of the Kitchen sup- plies for daily comparison with the Dinner Bills, it being understood that no such supplies shall be issued without an order. HALL PORTER. He will enter in his book once a day the name of every member coming into the Club House. Stranofers callino; to see members will be shewn by him into the Reception Room, and intimation of their arrival inunediately sent by him to the member inquired for in the house. If a letter for an absent member be applied for by another member who may wish to forward it, the latter will be required to pay the postage (if xl I i/ 52 any), and to sign an acknowledgment in the Porter's book of his having received the letter, in case of any future question. He will have charge of the Lavatory on the first floor, Cloak Room, and the fires in Reading Room ; also papers and paper boxes, and see Lhat the rooms are kept regularly supplied with paper, pens, &c., and coal on fires. He will assist the Manager in the writing and dispatching of circulars, &c., and make himself generally useful in the Establishment in such ways as the Man- ager may require. WAITERS. The waiters and all other servants in the Establishment will be subject to the order of the Manager, and under him to the heads of the different departments, and will perform such duties as he or they may prescribe. YARDMAN. The yardman will light the fires, saw and cleave firewood, convey fuel at proper times to the var- ious apartments, clean knives, keep the footway in front and yard in rear of the House constantly clean, and perform all such other duties tia the X 63 Manager may from time to time direct. He will also assist the women servants in house-cleaning, when called on to do so by the Housekeeper. GENERAL SERVANTS' REGULATIONS. No officers or servants will receive, under pen- alty of immediate dismissal, any present what- ever from the members or tradesmen of the Club ; and any tradesmen detected in giving such will be forthwith discontinued, and never dealt with again. No male servant will absent himself from the Club House without leave from the Manager, nor female servant without leave from the House- keeper. No stranger will be admitted into the Club House except on business, and the servants are strictly prohibited from receiving visitors or followers. Servants on duty will remain in the Coffee Room, and not leave it, unless sent by the head waiter or a member. Any servant absenting himself or herself with- out leave from the Secretary will forfeit all wages during time of absence, unless he or she can fully satisfy the Committee that the absence was caused by sickness. / ^ /// • 1^ 54 Dinner will not be served to the servants after two o'clock p.m., except when they are prevented by duty from attending at the regular hours. Supper will l)e served from 9 to 9.45 p.m., after which none can be obtained. No linen, &c., will be washed for or by any servant within the Club House. Eatables left on the dishes will be taken direct to the Kitchen, and in no way appropriated by the servants. Servants while on duty will not talk to each other except on matters connected with their business ; and no servant is permitted to address an individual member in the house on matters either personal or relative to the concerns of the Ciub, — all communications of the latter kind to be made to the Secretary for the information of the Committee. If any money or articles supposed to be the property of members shall be found by the ser- vants in the Club House they will be delivered to the Manager. The servants' entrance in rear will be under lock, and the key thereof be in the custody of the Manager. . . . , . . . .55 No application for re-instabnent of a servant who may have been dismissed on the representa- tion of a member will be read or taken into consideration, unless it come through and be re- commended by the member on whose represent- ation he or she was dismissed. N. ENTRANCE HALL. Stranger will be admitted to view, the house unless accompanied by a member, and then only between the hours of 12 and 4 in the day. COFFEE ROOM. Breakfast may be served from eight until noon ; lunches and dinners from one o'clock p.m. until eight o'clock p.m.; hot and cold suppers up to 11.30 p.m. on Saturdays, 11 p.m. on Sundays, and 12.30 a.m. on all other days ; and liquors, tea and coffee up to one o'clock a.m. ; after which no orders of any kind can be received, unless special- ly authorized by the Active Committee of the week, on timely application in writing to the h J / I • '■ 5G Secretary, Members ordering dinner or luncheon will fill up their dinner bill themselves and not employ the waiter to do so. Articles of glass, earthenware, &c., which may be broken by the members, either in the Coffee Room or elsewhere in the house, will be paid for by them. MORNING ROOM AND UPSTAIRS ROOMS. No pamphlet, advertisement, or notice of any kind will be laid on the tables, or put up in the Club, by a member ; but any pamphlet, &c., which it may be wished to make known to the Club, shall be sent to the Secretary to be laid before the Committee for approval. Writing materials will be provided in the ' Morning Room. The Strangers' Room is for the exclusive use of 'members entertaining strangers, in accordance with Rule 13 of the Constitution. The House Dining Room is appropriated for House dinners on such days as the Committee may decide ; on all other days any member may engage the room, with the card room adjoining, for a party of not less than six, provided he gives previous notice to the Porter, who shall enter it in the Book kept for this purpose ; and on days tli'mm Bi >u when the room is not engaged, parties of not less than four can dino in the room, subject to its be- ing occupied by others if required. The Smoking Room is appropriated exclusive- ly to smokers, and smoking is permitted in the Billiard Room. No eatables beyond a sandwich, toast or biscuit will be allowed in any room besides the Coffee Room and Strangers' Room. No servants will be allowed to enter the room where a general meeting is assembled. 4 the DRESSING ROOM. Any portmanteau, bag or baggage of any kind must be taken awa}^ immediately after use, and n£>t allowed to remain in the Club House for future use.
