Dear Sir : On behalf of our fellow-officials, members of the City Treasurer's staff, we desire your acceptance of the accompanying Photographic Group Picture, as a memorial of the good-will and esteem which we all feel for our Old Chief, with an expression of the pleasure it will afford us if a look at the old faces now and again may bring back pleasurable memories of days gone by. We beg to assure you that your enforced retirement through failure of health, hastened, if not actually brought on, by your devotion to the City's interests, is deeply regretted by every member of the staff, a regret shared in common with the members of the City Council and the City officials generally, and we sincerely hope that rest and change of scene may result in a speedy restoration of your present impaired health. With an earnest prayer to the Giver of all Good Gifts for your future wel- fare and happiness. We have the honor to subscribe ourselves. Your sincere friends. City Hall, Toronto, 15th June, 1889. r-- • .■•/ REPLY OF MR. HARMAN, SENT INDlVinUALLY GENEROUS DONORS OF THE FOREGOINCJ ADDRESS AND PRESENTATION. My Friends, Accept my heartfelt thankH for your kind address acconiiMnying the gift of a grouped picture of your retired Treasurer surrounded by the official staff, and of others connected with the routine, of the City Treasurer's Department, over which it was his happy privilege to preside for so many yeats; and I assure you that these terms are not lightly chosen, or without a desire to emphasize their fullest meaning. Whilst, as the lieail of the Department, I was entrusted with its great responsibilities, it was iilways a plensure to me to know by the innumerable evidences of daily intercourse, that there existed the kindest desire to lighten those responsibilities by individual and united effort, and I now use the term, heartfelt thanks, not merely in relation to your address and presentation, but in endeavoring to convey the feelings with which I shall always regard this kind effort on your part. And in this connection I cordially recognize the courtesy of the Collectoi-s in taking part in the presentation, which affords me the opirartunity of recording my sense of the important service entrusted to them, and the uniform zeal and tidelity with which tliat service is performed. In regard to the presentation it«elf, I have often expressed the feeling that our rela- tions were not the ordinary ones existing between the head of a Department and his staff, but were those rather of the head and members of a family, bound together by the ties of mutual respect, contidence, and esteem ; and, so regarded, this grou|>ed picture is in,deed valuable to me as enabling me to have always before me a representation of all my old friends, than which nothing could have been thought of as a farewell nift which could be more grateful and acceptable. An occasion such as this naturally carries me back to the time when I assumed the duties of office with all the bright surroundings of health and energy, and in laying them down in consequence of impaired health, the result it would seem of pressing that energy too far, it is a great solace to me to know that I carry with me into retirement the good wishes of you all, and foi- these good wishes and the accompanying presentation, so thoughtfully conceived and so happily executed, let me again and again tender you ray thanks. My friends, may every blessing, and of all blessings the continuance of good health especially, be yours, and may you be spared to see Toronto, in whose service we have spent some of the best years of our lives, increase in wealth and prosperity, and attain the tirst rank among the mitny great cities of this great Dominion.
