" He shall cover thee with His feathers, and under His wings shall thou trust." From this, the work went on, as time and labor from a busy pastorate could be given to it. At the request of the Y. M. C. A. secretary, London, Ont., it appeared first in pamphlet form ; and then in a larger edition, entitled, "Spiritual Longings and Divine Responses." The present is a complete revision and enlargement of the latter volume, with poetry added. The author's idea in preparing this book has been, that as poet and musician, artist and artizan aim to give effect, by skilfully selecting and arranging their material, so, and much more, should the composer of Scripture Readings. As Israel's royal poet said, "Neither will I ofEer Durnt offerings unto the Lord my God which cost me nothing." Thus in these readings, the author has endeavored, from various versions of the scripture, to select and arrange the passages faithfully, appropriately, taste- fully, and responsively ; developing in each topic the thought. May He " who has magnified his word above all his name," own the imperfect endeavor, and make it a comfort and blessing to many. AUTHOR. Contents. Title . . . Even a glance at " Converse with the King," re- veals its rare value to the devout and diligent student of God's Word. It exhibits fine skill and taste in the selection of its topics, in their alphabetical arrange- ment, and in its thoughtful compilation of the Scrip- tures. But its special value is found in the fact that it brings the soul into communion with Him of whom the Scriptures testify. John 5 : 39. And it is only in the perusal of the inspired writings we understand the meaning of the words, "The King is held in the galleries." Song 7:5. It was while the Psalmist spoke of the things he had made touching the King, his heart bubbled up, and his tongue became " the pen of a ready writer." Ps. 45 : 1. And the reader of this book must experience something of the same joy, as he goes from subject to subject, day by day, beholding him whom the Redeemed and the Angels delight to adore. Rev. 5. To him shall be fulfilled in measure here, the promise fulfilled without measure hereafter, "Thine eyes shall see the King in his beauty." Isa. 33 : 17. After all, there is nothing like the word of God to confirm and comfort the believer, to guide and guard his steps, to sanctify and strengthen him along his pilgrim way to meet the Lord in the air. " The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul ; the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple ; the stat- utes of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart ; the commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes ; the fear of the Lord is clean, enduring forever ; the judgments of the Lord are true and righteous altogether. More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold ; sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb. Ps. 19 : 7-10. May those who have " Converse with the King," be as the King himself, who cop Id say, *' The Lord God hath given me the tongue of the learned, that I should know how to speak a word in season to him that is weary. He wakeneth morning by morning ; He waken- eth mine ear to hear as the learned." Isa. 50 : 4. Thus listening to the voice that sounds through the Scriptures, and is borne in the power of the Holy Spirit to the conscience and heart, they can wait with glad anticipation the time when Jesus shall come forth from the opened heavens, the crowned *'KiNa of Kings and Lord of Lords." Rev. 19 : 16. Eev. James H. Brookes, D. D. St. Louis, Mo. U. S. It is with the greatest pleasure, that I commend these selections, to those who know me in the Presby- terian Church, and beyond. My brother, Mr.Porter, is not only a devoted christian Pastor, and earnest student of the word of God, but has a great deal of the christian poet in his mental structure. Besides, he seems to have a peculiar genius for seizing upon points in christian experience that are apt to elude the notice of others, and put them in a strong, commanding position, as benefi- cial, if not essential, to the christian life. His aim is far from controversial, and his spirit thoroughly unsectar- ian. The selections in this volume will be found admirably adapted to the wants of God's children, and their frequent perusal, under the illumination of God*s Holy Spirit, cannot be otherwise than helpful and sano tifying. Rev. William Cochrane, D. D., Zion ProHbyterian Church, Brantford, Ont. t , I have been greatly pleased with the devotionftl manual prepared by Rev. W. H. Porter, M. A. As re- gards both plan and execution, the work is so excellent in itself, that it will be appreciated wherever it is known ; and Mr. Porter is so well and favorably known throughout Canada, that the demand for the book should be considerable. Prop. Albert H. Newman, D. D., LL. D. Toronto Baptist Goll^^ That God's children may be happier, holie and more useful, by being better acquainted with their heavenly Father, my brother, Rev. W. H. Porter, has prepared this volume, "Converse with the King." No christian can read these scripture selections, arranged with so much taste and care, under the different topics, without being spiritually enriched. They cannot fail to bring him into sweetest fellowship with the fountain and source of all blessing. The selections of poetry too, most of them from Bro. Porter's pen, breathe the Hweetness of the celestial hills. I most heartily com- mend this volume to *' the household of faith." D. Hutchinson, Pastor of Park Baptist Church, Brantford. " Converse with the King," by Rev. "W. H. Porter, M. A., should be helpful to all its readers. A good sel- ection of Bible passages iUumines every topic, making it an easy guide. I regard it prepared bread to hand for all hungry souls in any Church or station in life. Rev. a. E. Russ, M. A. Pastor of Wellington Street Methodist Church, Brantford. " Converse With the King." The idea is worthy of a book. The book matches and glorifies the idea . The book is itself a poem, and de- serves to be illustrated and adorned. It carries the reader into a realm traversed by a Jay, and a Spurgeon, and many more ; and yet it reveals what others have not discovered, and brings us face to face with Him of whom the Bride speaks, "Let Him kiss me with the kisses of His mouth, for thy love is better than wine." The attentive reaV'er of this book will be led to say indeed, "The King hath brought me into his chambers ; we will be glad and rejoice in thee." Rev. Justin D. Fulton D. D. Brooklyn, N. Y. The pages that I saw of Rev. Mr. Porter's Scripture Readings, showed the plan to be very effective. It is better to my thinking than any such readings that I know. Rev. William Briggs. D. D., Methodist Book and Pub. House, Toronto. I have read, and heard read, a considerable portion of the book entitled, "Converse with the King," by Rev. W. H. Porter. The book is characteristic. The striking features of the book are the admirable arrangement of topics, and the deep spiritual insight evinced in the collection of so many scripture texts. The work cannot fail to comfort and encourage many a weary pilgrim on his way to the Celestial City. I augur for this book a mission of blessing. Rev. T. S. Let me die the death of the righteous, and let my last end be like his ! Num. 23 : 10. Mark the perfect man, and behold the upright : for the end of that man is peace. Ps. 37 : 37. Whether we live, we live unto the Lord : and whether we die, we die unto the Lord. Whether we live or die there fore, we are the Lord's. For we know that if the earthy house of our bodily frame be dissolved, we have a building of God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens . . . Being therefore always of good courage, and knowing that whilst we are at home in the body, we are absent from the Lord . . . we are willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be at hone with the Lord. Wherefore we make it our aim tha<: whether at home or absent, we may be well-pleasing unto him. For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain : . . and what I shall choose I know not, but I am in a strait betwixt the two, having the ddsire to depart and be with Christ ; for it is far better.
