Maps, plates, charts, etc., may be filmed at different reduction ratios. Those too targe to be entirely included in one exposure are filmed beginning in the upper left hand corner, left to right and top to bottom, as many frames as required. Knij,'hl of Uif iMr.slclass Onlcr of St. Michaol, 1S8G; Honorary Member of the lloyal Academy, Munieh, 188G; Honorable Mention, Paris International Exhibition, 1889. rrofchsor Hcffncr was born at "Wurzlmr;; in 1840. He received liis training at Jtunich, but did not really find lii.s way into his projier ]iatli until ho went to London and discovered in the .scenery of Enjiland that which most directly and .strongly ajipealcd to his .sentiment and temiierament. He has painted Continental subject.s of all varieties, from Haly to the remote North, but his English Landscapes are those in which his greatest art is displayed. The alliance of land and water is his favorite theme. AVide river.s, showery skie.s, wastes of marslilaml, and the luxuriant vegetation of drowned meadows and groves rooted in the moist soil of alluvial streams, ]irovide him with his best-loved material. Among these he is at home, as Daubigny was on the plaeiil current of the Oise, as Millet was in the lields of iiarbizon, and Corot among the silvery willows of Ville d'Avray. Until very recently, the collectors of England absorbed most of his productions. Since special exhibitions have been made of them in Germany and New York, a more general demand for the possession of his work exists amongst collectors.
