Mr. Haun 18 well known in the viciaity, having resided here over fifty years, and is highly respected as a man of the strict- est honor, whose word is as good as his bond. As will be seen from his letter, four physicians had attended him, and it was only after he had given up hope of cure that he had decided to try Burdock Blood Bitters on the recommendation of a neighbor who had been cured of a similar disease by its use. Mr. Haun writes as follows : Dear Sirs,— I think I have been one of the worst sufferers you have yet heard of, having been six years in the hands of four of our best doctors without ob- taining permanent relief, but continually growing worse, until almost beyond hope of recovery, I tried your Bitters and got relief in a few da vs. Every organ of my body was deranged, the liver enlarged, hardened and torpid, the heart and digestive organs seriously deranged, a large abscess in my back, followed by paralysis of tha right leg, in fact the lower i seeing that for the four years since I have had -s good health as ever I had I ' svitrn Tf ^i.^°'''^^ ^"' i^'^^ I ^^^d i*^"* because I wilh to keep my I ww7h«v^« ''Sr'^'"^ .T*^""- J "^^ *^^"^ «* ^« ^«r« lemarkable caseffi I wnat I have myself passed through, and no words can express my thankfulness for such perfect recovery. THE: SHIELD AGAINST DISEASE BURDOCK BLOOD BITTERS Kegrulates and Stpengrthens the Stomach, Llvep, Bowels and Blood. The Seopet of Cuplng Chponlc Complaints. It is a fact that the prime cause of much ill health con- sisto in some obstruction or clogging of organic funciiions, ▼ which prevents a free, healthy circulation of the blood, and other fluids, or in other words an unequal circulation. The remedy in such cases is plainly indicated. Equalize the circulation of the nervous and vital fluids to restore the equilibrium of health. This is just what Burdock Blood Bitters does to perfection ; by its renovating effect upon the whole glandular system it makes pure healthy blood, and causes it to circulate freely to build up the ex- hausted tissues of the body, and thus restores V)th physical and mental vigor. One great advantage of Burdock Blood Bitters over other medicines is that "it acts at the same time on the Liver, the Bowels, tho Secretions and the Kidneys, while it imparts strength. Good Blood and Free CiBCtriiATioN are the main springs of health. Burdock Blood Bitters unlocks all the secretions, makes pure, rich, nourishing blood, and promotes a healthy action to every organ, driving out all poisonous humors, and giving strength to ihe feeble frame. In this way only, by natural and proper means does B.B.B. cure Dyspepsia, Constipation, Biliousness, Headache, Bad Blood, Scrofula and all Skin Diseases. B.B.B. contains no poison. Constipation or costiveness often arises from improper food, ne(jl(!ct of regularity, etc., but more frequently is caused by torpid liver, dyspepsia or bad blood. In its turn it causes a multitude of dis- tressing symptoms and diseases such as headache, piies, fistula, eruptions, sores, stomach troubles and liver -and kidney diseases; in I'act health is impossible while constipation exists. Its Cure. The natural remedy is a toniii lax- ative sucl as B.B.B, is, to gentlj, yet thoroughly act on the bowels, unlock the secretions and remove all impure matter. By \i^ action on the four cardinal points of health, the stomach, liver, bovi^els and blood, this medicine regulates the entire system, and by removing the cause not only curet, constipation but prevents its returr if reasonable care be used in diet. Cases which for twenty-five years resisted all other treatment have been permanently cured by B.B.B. Never stand still in cold v;eather, especially after having t Ven a slight dagree of exercise, and always a, .id standing on ice or snow, where the person is exposed to the cold wind. Why Is Food Required? The quest*, a seems almost absurd, so famil- iar is the fact ; and yet the answer to it in- volves ono of the grandest chapters in tho history of science. In its simplest form it riiay be given in three wordK : it is fuel. We require food frequentljr, for just the same reason that a fire requires coal frequently, and a lamp oil— because we are burningaway. The air that we breathe into our lungs con- tains oxygen, and this oxygen combines with or burus the nt^uscles or otner organs of our bodies just as it does the coals in a fire. About 30 oz. of oxygen a day are thus consumed, re- quiring about 12 oz. of carbon to replace the waste, or say 3 lbs. of bread. The heat pro- duced in a man's tody in the course of a day is considerable in quantity, though not very intense in quality. Taking the average, it ia onough to raise five and a half gallons of water from freezing point to boiling point, and this is about tne heat that would be given off dur- ing the burning of a pound of coal. McNee, of St. Ives, Ont., is Rescued f^om Misery by «^^s§gggg^^ BBB l§aggggggs^ An Interesting: Account of His Case. He Throws Away His Crutches. STATEMENT OF MR. MoNE'E. For eight years I was troubled with a sore on my leg which resulted from having it broken. The doctors kept me in bed five months trying to heal it up, but all to no purpose. I tried all sorts of salves, liniments, ointments, pills and blood medicines but with no benefit. In 1883 it became so bud that I had to sit on one chair and keep my foot on another for four months. I could not put my foot on the ground or the blood would rush out in a stream and my leg swelled to twice its natural size. . . . ELEVEN RUNNING SORES . . . developed on it which reduced me to a living skeleton (I lost 70 lbs. in|four months). Friends advised me to go to the Hospital ; but I would not, for I knew they would take my leg off. The doctor then wanted to split it open and scrape the bone, but I was too weak to stand the operation. One old lady said it had turned to black erysipelas r.nd could never be cured. I had never heard of Burdock Blood Bitters then, but I read of a minister, Rev. Mr. Stout, (see testimony on page 16), who had been cured of a severe abscess on the neck by B.B.B., after medical aid had failed, and I thought I would try iv. I washed the leg with the Bitters and took them according to directions. After using one bottle I could walk on crutches, after taking three, I threw away the crutches, took a scythe and went to work in the field. At the end of the sixth bottle my leg was entirely healed up ; pieces of loose bone had worked out of it and the cor Is came back to their natural places again. That was nine years ago and it has never broken out since, I can walk five miles to-day as fast as anyone, and all this I owe to B.B.B., which certainly saved my leg if not my life. I cheerfully recommend it to all sufferers. Give B.B.B. a trial, it will cure yon as it did me. Yours truly, WM. McNEE, St. Ives P.O., Ont. Mr. F. C. CURES SCROFULA. Seventeen Physicians Failed. Ulcepous Abscess Cured After 20 years Sufferlnar by B.B.B. In Four Months* Time. SCROFULA. For upwards of twenty years I endured the most awful suffering from a scro- fulous abscess on my neck, and not- withstanding the skillful treatment of seventeen of the best physicians in Canada, failed to obtain reli )f . When I had exhausted all the resources of regular medical practitioners, I resorted to nearly all the patent medicines that promised to cure scrofulous and blood diseases, but without any benefit what- ever. Finally, in an almost helpless condition, I tried Burdock Blood Bitters, thinking that if the medicine was good when taken internally, I reasoned that it must be equally good when outwardly applied. So I wet a linen cloth with the Bitters, and applied ; also used it as a wash upon the sores. I took these Bitters for about four months, with the most astonishing and gratifying results, and for the first time in four years I was enabled to dispense with surgical aid, which I firmly believe I shall never require again for the same disease. More than two years have elapsed since I have had any attack of the disease, and I feel as well and safe now as if it had never affected me. I have used Burdock Blood Bitters internally and externally for one of my children, wiio was afflicted with an obstinate humor of the blood, and whose face was covered with sores, now per- fectly smooth and clean ; also my servant treated for swelled neck, and many other cases in our parish to whom we have given and recommended the remedy. Knowing that it cured me, and believ- ing that it saved my life, I most earnestly and heartily recommend it to suffering humanity, and urge all who may be similarly affl[icted to give it a trial, believing it to be a true specific for all constitutional scrofulous blood diseases, and unsurpassed as a rare healing remedy of great cleansing and curative power. Yours faithfully, EEV. WM. STOUT, Point Edward, Ont. Hints on Etiquette. Wlicn introducing a friend, couBider if the introduction is likely to be acceptable— to botla parties. A fe'ontlenian should be introduced to the lady, not the lady to the gentleman. If tlie sexes are the same, always present the inferior in social rank to the superior. Permission must be obtained when a gen- tleman is presented to a lady. One gentleman being introduced to another, should acknowledge it by a bow, net by offer- ing the hand. I'ersons meeting at a mutual friend's, not mtroduced, should not claim acquaintance if they meet elsewhere. If walking with a friend, you meet or are joined by a third, it is unnecessary to intro- duce the one to the other. At a ball or evening party, the lady of the housb may introduce any gentleman to a lady without first asking the lady's permission, after ascertaining if the lady is willing to dance. An introduction given to a lady at a ball does not entitle a gentleman to bow to her on a future occasion ; if he commits that error, the lady is not bound to acknowledge his sahitation. Letters of introduction should be sent by post, enclosing your own card— not personal delivery. If desirous to pay a high compliment to the person introduced, invite him to dine with you, and have a few friends to meet him. Letters of introduction should be given un- sealed. Afternoon calls are usually made between the hours of two and four. When returning complimentary visits, you may leave a card without going in. It is usual to ask after the health of the family. Visits of condolence are paid within a week after the event that occasions them. On makmg morning calls, a gentleman should never leave his hat in the hall— take it into the room with him— should be held in the hand, not placed on any of the furniture. Umbrellas must be left in the hall. If during a visit in the drawing-room (which should not exceed half-an-hour) a lady visitor leaves, it is polite to rise. On other visitors being announced, wait till they are seated, then depart, bowing politely to the newly-arrived guests. Avoid looking at your watch during a visit. In conversation avoid political, commercial or religions subjects ; never interrupt a person when speaking; appear to pay attention and to be interested in the conversation. Whis- pering is bad taste, or conversing in a lan- guage that all parties may not be acquaimed with. If gifted with wit, do not make a dis- play of it. Look, but avoid staring, in the face of the person you are conversing with. To be an agreeable companion,!^ is necessary to be well acquainted with the current books Oi the daj". Scandal IsineACusablc. In conversing with persons of rank, avoid the too frequent use of their title ; address a nobleman as you would any other gentleman; the Prince of Wales is only addressed as Sir in conversation ; the Queen, Madam. Many dangerous and distresBing dis- eases prevail in suninier and fall, and as they occur suddenly, often terminate fatally before aid can be had. Complaints Buch as Cholera Morbut, Cholera In- fantum, Diarrhooa, Dysentery, Colic and bilious attacks are nearly always due primarily to an unhealthy condition of the bile and blood, the attack being excited by indiscretions in diet, bad air and water, colds, unripe fruit, ferment- ing food or anything which causes an excess of bile. Cholera is now said to bo caused by a minute germ or bacillus, and rigid cleanliness and the use of dis- infectants is indicated. Choleia Morbus and Canadian Cholera are modified forms of Asiatic Cholera, with many symptoms in common, such as purging, cramps and collapse. Never neglect a simple diarrhcoa, but avoid opiates and powerful astringents which sometimes produce inflammation through too suddenly checking the discharge. The symptoms in these complaints vary greatly ; so-aetimes theid is grea*-. pain, nausea and vomiting, in other cases painless diarrhoea exists, but in al. ce.Hes the sovereign remedy is Dr. Fowler's Extract of Wild Strawlrgrry, which promptly arrests the diairhcea, soothes the pain and corrects the unhealthy biliary symptoms. It is well known to the medical pro- fession that as a blood building tonic, there is no one element in medicine of more value than Iron, the effect of which is to strengthen and restore the red cor- puscles or nutritive principle of the vital fluid, and is peculiarly adapted to those pale, bloodless conditions that we so often see in the feeble and debilitated, and especially in females suffering from nervous depression, loss of blood, pallor, weakness, fainting and the many ail- ments peculiar to their ' .x. FOR CONVALESCENTS, or during the recovery from exhausting fevers, where the strength lags and the appetite lies dormant, the gentle stimu- lant of PURE SHERRY WINE and the nourishing properties of CONCENTRATED SOLUBLE BEEP when flavored to a palatable form, makes a most valuable and agreeable source of nourishment that even the dyspeptic with inability to digest food may take with pleasure and benefit. Wine that could not be borne in any other form, will be most beneficial as a gentle stimulant in this manner; and Iron that would not be tolerated by the delicate and sensitive, will in this palatable form be quite ac- ceptable to the most critical taste. Combining XVutrlcsnt Tonic with Mild Stimiaants and Aromatic Stomachics. The very essentials required iu a wide range of debilitated conditions of both sexes and all ages, eitJier in acute or cluronio forma of disease. T. MILBURN & CO., Proprietops, TORONTO, ONT. Facts about London. London (with ail the suburbs) covers within the 15 miles radius of Charing Cross, nearly 700 square miles. It numbers within these boundaries over 4,000,000 inhabitants. It contains more country-bom persons than the counties of Devon and Gloucester com- bined, or 37 per cent, of its entire population. Every four minutes a birth takes place in the metropolis, and every six minutes a death. Within the circle named there are added to the population 205 persona every day, and 75,000 annually. London has 7,000 miles of streets, and on an average, 28 miles of new streets are opened, and 9,000 new houses built every year. 1,000 vessels and 9,000 sailors are in port every day. Its crime is also in proportion to its extent. 73,LG0 persons are annually taken into custody by the police, and more than one-third of all the crime in the country is committed within its borders. 38,000 persons are annually com- mitted for drunkenness by its magistrates. The Metropolis comprises considerably up- wards of 100,000 foreigners from every quarter of the globe. It contains more Boman Catholics than Bome itself, more Jews than the whole of Palestine, more Irisn than Belfast, more Scotch than Aberdeen, and more Welsh than Cardiff. Its beer shops and gin palaces are so num- erous, that their frontages, if placed side by side, would stretch from Charing Cross to Chichester, a distance of 62 miles. With regard to churches and chapels, the Bishop of London, examined before a Com- mittee of the House of Lords in the year 1840, said :— " If you proceed a mile or two eastward of St. Paul's you will find yourself in the midst of a population the most wretched and destitute or mankind, consisting of artificers, laborers, beggars, and thieves, to the amount of 300,000 to 400,000 souls. Throughout this entire quarter there is not more than one church for every 10,000 inhabitants, and in two districts there is but one church for 45,900 souls." Advice to Boys. A powerful, pleasant and pure in- vigorating tonic and appetizer, which cleans the foul-coated tongue, sharpens the appetite, and invigorates both body and brain to a remarkable degree. In moderate doses it is a mild and genial tonic ; in larger doses it breaks up and prevents the return of Ague, Chills, Bilious Fevtr, Dumb Ague and similar coniplaints, and fortifies the system against their attacks, imparting both ner- vous and muscular strength, and quieting undue febrile excitement if taken during the intermission of remitting fevers. In Milburn's Aromatic Quinine Wine, none but the purest sulphate of Quinine is employed. This, combined with the choicest of Aromatics to flavor, and the finest Sherry Wine in which the Quinine is perfectly dissolved, renders this pre- paration both agreeable and reliable.
