VIII SECTION II KNOLISH HISTORY, LITERATURE, ARCKAOLOOY, ETC. A CANADIAN BIBLIOGRAPHY FOR THE YEAR igox By LAWRENCE J. BURPEE FOR 8ALB BY J. HOPE ft SONS, OTTAWA ; THE COPP-CLARK CO., TORONTO BERNARD QUARITCH, LONDON, ENGLAND xgca 3967 t^Q-\^wmon II., 1002 [888] TxAUfi. R. 8. C. VII.- .1 Caiuiiliiiit IlibHwiraiihij of the i'ear I'tOt. By Mn. Lawhence J. Burpee. (Read May », 1903.) The preparation of the following bibliography was undertaken at the request of the late Honorary Secretary of the Royal Society. Sir John Bourinot had for several years advocated the compiling of an annual Canadian Bibliography, to be published in the Transactions of the Royal Society, which would cover everything of importance by Can- adian writers, bearing upon subjects included in the English Litera- ture section of the So<'ii'ty. He had had some thought.^ of atteiiii»ting tuch a bibliography himself — and his admirable bibliography of the Royal Society proved his special fitness for the present task — but the pressure of other engagements made it impossible. No other member ol the Royal Society seemed prepared to undertake the bibliography, and Sir John Bourinot, knowing that I had had some little experience in work of this nature, asked me to attempt it. I had several opportunities of discussing the plan and scope of the proposed work with Sir John Bourinot, and we finally decided to include, not only books, but, as far as they could be identified, pamphlets, pai^rs in wviety transactions, and magazine articles. Tn the latter class navo 1 een inciiided (luarterly, '"i thly and weekly periodicals — everything, in fact, except newspape»j. Of course, the list has not been confined to Canadian periodicals, yut includes, as well, Canadian work in English and American magazines. The con- tents of Canadian college magazines have also been embodied in the bibliography. The list is confined to books, articles, etc., in English, but the original intention to restrict it to subjects covered by the English Literature section of the Society was not found aUojrtther feasible, as it was sometimes difficult to define exactly what what did not belong to that section. I have consequently not only material in history, biography, fiction, poetry, arc! and other subjects coming within the 1 wnidaries of the En erature section, but also considerable matter belonging to t tific sections. Although these sections have, of recent yea fairly well covered by special bibliographies, it did not seem dcsiral to exclude anything that might serve to supplement the material they contained. At the same time, the bibliography does not profess to be anything like exhaustive, so far as pvroly scientific publications are concerned. 184 ROYAL SOCIETY OF CANADA I am indebted to many friend* tJirou>;hout Cunudii, ond abroad, for a«i»i«tancc in Kuthcring dutu; and would ei»|K«cially like to acknow- K'd^e the very . omplete ii«t furiii-hed by Mr. Araold Haultain, of the writing!. ..i Dr. Uohlwin Smith. The librarian* of tho several Canadian college* have iu*a been mo>«t courteou* and helpful. No paui* nave been nporod to make the bibliographv a* complete as po**il.le. both 0* to ihe book* ami article, included, ami the data descriptive of each. Not only ha* every avaUable source of informa- tion iH'cn personally cxninined, but. where book* or periodical* were not acce**ible here, data has been *wurcd from the puldishers or from the custmlian* of public librarie*. Notices asking for data a* to privately printed book* and book* printetl abroad, were pub- lished in the literary weeklie* of Lon.lon, V.>w York, Boston and Chica^'o. as well a* in ncwsiwpers in all the ioadihg Canadian cities. Finally, to gather up a* much a* possible of the residue, direct corres- pondence was had with many Canadian authors, of whose work I felt that I still had insufficient data. This involved the writing of several hundred letters, iloving exhausted every possible avenue of informa- tion, I am still only too conscious that the biblio.^'raphy will show many omissions and many inoccuracies. For these, in view of the difficulty of covering, in anything like an exhaust. ve manner, such a wide and vaiitd field, one iiuiy i)erhaps claim at least a measui-e of indulgcnie. This bil.Iio<;raphy cannot be more disappointing to others than it is to the compiler. In attempting such a task one IS forcibly reminded of the warning of a veteran bibliographer: "If you are troubled with a conceit of accuracy, and would have it com- pletely taken out of yon. prepare a bibliography." In addition to the bibliography proper, there will be fouu an Index of brief Titles, which may prove of service to those seeking material on a given topic, rather than the work of a particular author. Poetry will be found in a section by itself. It is, of course, patent that the value and usefulness of such a bibliography as the present depends very largely upon its being con- tinued from year to year; but one man can hardly be expected to give the time demanded by a task of this magnitude; nor in anv event can one man do it justice. If I may be permitted to make a suggestion, it 18 that, in the event of this Canadian Bibliography being continued from year to year, the work should be divided among a number of men, each having a special knowledge of the subject entrusted to him. One might collect the year's publications in botany, another gather the work in history, a third deal with geolog}-, a fourth with fiction, and so on, both in English and French, through the entire range of subjects. The [avBPtt] A CANADIAN BIBUOGRAPUY OF THE YEAR 1901 888 «l D material might then be handed to u general editor, thoroughly conver- •ant «ith bibiiography and modern cataloguing mien, who could put it into uniform shape, arrange it in proper order, brint; the data into har- mony with tho mott approved prat^tice, and prepare a full index of titles, with croM-referenccii, subject headinfta, etc. In this way, a biblio- graphy wonld be prepared, year by voar. covering im whole field of humn knowledge, so far at* Cansdiin work i-i rone rued , a bibliography whicu would be of genuine service to student.^ both nt home and abroad, and aliku creditable to Canada and the Roynl Society.
