(Sgd.) E. GILPIN, Jr. H((lif(i.r, May 18, J.8Kk HALT FAX, j,,iy W, JSSo. WILLIAM VanSLOOTEN. Esq., Eastern Development Co., 95 Milk Street, Boston, Mass. Dear Hir, — I regret that al)sence in Cape Breton has preventt'd earlier attention to your letter of the lOth. It would he difficult to give any exact estimate of tlie iron ore })resent in all the Watson areas. In the case of the best known properties, viz., the Specula;- and Fall Brook it may ])t; said on the No. 2, area there has been found a sx'ven foot bed of specular ore extending about a mile on the pro- perty. Averaging the ore at a thickness of 5 feet, there vyould be to a depth of 200 feet 825,000 tons of ore. A similar estimate may be given of the other Specular ore propi'rties lying further to the eastvv'ard. On the east side of the River the Ross area covers acon- siilerable run of red licvmatite ore. It is believed that the ground between the synclinal Kennedy and Ross outcrops would be about SOO acres of ore averaging about 4 feet () inches in thickness. In the case of the Fall Brook ore I am led to believe that the property holds about a mile in length of ore not less than fifteen feet thick on an averagi.', which would yield to a depth of 200 feet about 2,250,000 tons of ore. I am unabU' to give any estimate of the amount of ore in the French river area but it is apparently Vi>ry large. The cost on mining would vary witli each ore and each _ I mi ^ bed. The cost would run I presume, loaded into cars, at the mine from (SO cents a ton at the Fall Brook to $1.85 a ton on the most expensive of the Speculai- areas. I should tliink the Fall Brook property could be opened with a view 12 ot' reaching a daily out-put of :}()() tons at a eo.st of (including two miles of railway) sav S."i5,()()(). Tlie cost of tianspoi't tVoni the Watson piopcitn's vaiu's jKcoiding to rates efiected and 1 could not say nnich altout it.
