Sec. 35. All Cantons in a Department shall be numbered in consecutive order, according to date of organization. 15 Sec. 30. Cantons may select suitable names as a particular designation, at option, except that the names of living persons shall not be used; and where such special titles are used, they shall follow the word "Canton." Sec. 37. A Canton cannot change its name at will; it must forward a petition to the Department Council, setting forth such desire, and giving the reasons why the name of the Body should be so changed; and the Department Council may grant or refuse the petition. Sec. 38. After a Canton has been duly mustered into the service, the mustering officers shall hold an election for the elective officers of the Canton, which election shall be conducted in the same manner as prescribed for the annual election of Canton officers, and the result shall be immediately canvassed and declared by the mustering officer. If the Canton is mustered in during the last half of the Canton P. M. year, i. e., between October 2Gth and April 3Gth, the first officers shall continue in office during the re- mainder of that year, and the year following, without further election. Sec. 39. Cantons shall hold regular monthly meet- ings or Cantonments, and may hold such other meet- ings as their By-Laws shall prescribe. A quorum for transacting business in a Canton is five Chevaliers, and no business can be transacted unless there be five members present. Sec. 40. A uniform Code of By-Laws may be pre- pared for each Department by the Department Council, but each Canton may adopt such By-Laws as may seem proper; provided, the same do not conflict with this Code or the laws and regulations of the Order; such By-Laws shall not take effect until approved by the Department Council, or, during its recess, by the Department Commander. Sec. 41. A Canton shall have and use a Seal, which shall be approved by the Commander of the Depart- ment in which such Canton is situate, to which officer 16 impressions of such Seals shall be forwarded for approval, before the same shall be used. Sec. 42. At the annual installation of officers, each Canton shall make returns upon blanks, to be prepared and sent to it by the Department Council, of the names of officers installed, and of its retired officers holding retired Commissions, with the rank and gra,de of each; also the number of Chevaliers, active and honorary, and of the number admitted, suspended, expelled, discharged or deceased during the year; also of its receipts and expenditures during the year; and of its assets. Cantons directly under the Sovereign Grand Lodge will report to the Department Commander and to the Adjutant-General; in other Departments, to the Department Commander. Sec. 43. At the regular annual installation and muster of the Cantons, the Countersign shall be pro- mulgated to Chevaliers. Should a Canton, from any cause, fail to muster on the day named, then its officers are charged to proceed with the installation, muster and inspection of the Canton as early as practicable thereafter. At which time the Countersign shall be promulgated. Sec. 44. If a Canton does not meet within the period of a year, the Warrant may be reclaimed by the Depart- ment Council. After the arrest of the Warrant of a Canton, the Body becomes defunct, and its former members cannot exercise functions as organized Chev- aliers. Sec. 45. A Canton cannot surrender its Warrant, muster itself out of the service or dispose of its prop- erty at will; it must first make application to the Department Council, or, during its recess, to the De- partment Commander, requesting to be mustered out of the service, setting forth the reasons therefor; and should it be determined to so muster out the Body, all its property reverts to the Patriarchs Militant of the Department. 17 Sec. 46. A Canton desiring to surrender its War- rant and be mustered out of the service, shall turn over to the officer reclaiming the Warrant, all of its effects, such as regalia, uniforms (if owned by the Canton), banners, flags.
