JAME8» CLUB," of Montreal. 2. Politics and religious questions of every Politicsand description shall be absolutely excluded from Religion, the objects of the Club. 3. £ach Candidate for admission shall be Candidates, proposed by one Member, and seconded by an- other, by a. proposal in writing, to be inserted in the book of Candidates, and signed by both mover and\seconder, and shall be brJioted for .at any ballot which may take placo viter the * lapse of one week from the time of such pro- posal, provided the name of the Candidate and his proposer and seconder have been posted in the Coffee-room, under the hand of the Secre- tary, at least one week before the day of ballot. No ballot shall be valid, unless twenty mem- bers actually ballot; and one black ball in seven shall exclude. 4. But the Subscriptions of new members ballotted for on or after the first day of January in any year, shall extend to the 15th day of April in the following year : this rule to apply to members who have joined the Club during the present year. That the Report of the Building Committee now readj be received and adoptedj and that in accord- ance with its recommendation^ the Annual Sub- scription of Ordinary Members be increased to Seven Pounds Ten Shillings per annum^ on and after the 15/ A April^ 1863. No member shall be admitted to vote on vol^g &c. ^^y occasion whatever, or enjoy /any of the privileges of the Club, until he shall have paid whatever Entrance Fee or Subscription shall be due by him. All Entrance Fees and Annual Subscrip- Paid to tions shall be paid either to the Treasurer per- Treasurer, sonally, or to his credit to the Bank of British North America. 11. Any Member who may be absent fromMemV Canada during the whole period for which the ^^^^ Annual Subscription is payable, may be con- Bidered as a supernumerary Member, and be S exempted* from the Subscription during the"^ continuance of such absence ; but any Mem- ber availing himself of this indulgence must notify the same, by letter, to the Secretary, who shall insert his name in the book o\ Supernumerary Members. Officers in Her Majesty's army and navy, inArmyor and persons holding military and civil ap- pointments under the Imperial Government, who may be stationed in Canada for an indefi- nite period, and any other persons who shall satisfy the Committee that their residence in this country is temporary and precarious, and subject to be terminated by the occurrence of circumstances beyond their control, shall bo eligible for election as members without pay- ment of entrance Fee, but subject to the pay- ment of an Annual Subscription of Seven Pounds Ten Shillings, or a Semi-annual Sub- scription of five Pounds currency, and to the Constitutions and Regulations of the Club gen- erally ; such Members to be denominated " Privileged Members," and to enjoy all the advantages of the Club, except that of being elected Members of the Committee, or voting in any way in the affairs of the Club. The Committee shall meet weekly, on a Weekly stated day, to transact current business, and Meetings, to audit the accounts of the preceeding week, three of whom shall form a quorum. 20. The other meeting shall be held on the Wednesday fortnight, for the purpose of de- ciding on such propositions as may have been submitted at the former meeting ;^nd the chair shall be taken at all meetings atfC^clock. A quorum of twenty qualified Members shall be necessary to constitute any annual or special Meeting of the Club. 22. The Committee shall have power at all times to convene an extraordinary meet- ing of the Club, on giving fourteen days' notice, to be posted up during that period in the CoflFee-room of the Club, specifying the object of such meeting in the form of a resolu- tion ; at which meeting no subject shall be discussed beyond that specified in the notice. 23. The Club-house shall open every day for the reception of Members, at 7 o'clock in the forenoon in the summer, and 8 o'clock in the forenoon in the winter, and shall be closed and the lights extinguished at 1 a.m., except on Saturdays when the hour of closing shall be midnight ; and no member shall be admit- into the Club after these hours on any pre- tence whatever, unless specially authorized by the Committee. Any cause of complaint that may arise Complaints, is to be written and signed by the Member so complaining, on his bill , which complaint must be specially noticed by the Committee, on settling the weekly accounts ; and any in- attention or improper conduct of a servant is to be stated by letter, under the signature of such Member, which being put in the Secre • tary's box, must be laid before the Committee at their next weekly meeting. 29. All Members are to pay their bills, for Pay Club every expense they incur in the Club, before ^^^'^' they leave the house. 30. No game shall on any account be played No Gamb- for money, except whist ; nor dice used in the ^^"^* Club-House, except at backgammon. No higher stake than quarter dollar Points shall be played for, nor shall any bet exceed one dollar. Smoking. No Dogs. 12 The games of Picquet and Pool are permit- ted to be played for limited stakes. The limits of stakes to be fixed by the Committee. 31. No smoking shall be permitted in the Club-House except in the room set apart for that purpose. 32. No Member is on any account to bring a dog into the Club-House. Constitu- 33. Any Article of this Constitution may be aUered^^ ^® altered, amended or suspended for any length of time, by consent of two-thirds of the Mem- bers present at any Meeting specially con- vened for that purpose; provided that such alteration, amendment or suspension shall have been specified in the notice summoning such Meeting. 34. The ordinary weekly meetings will ue held every Tuesday at half-past Four o'clock, P. M., at which three shall form a quorum. In the absence of the duly appointed Chairman, a Chairman for the day will be first elected, and the minutes of the last meeting having been read, the question will be put by the Chairman " that they be confirmed ?" If the minutes be objected to by a majority of the Members present, the particular subject objected to will be reserved for consideration, either at an extraordinary meeting or at the next ordinary meeting, as may be de- cided upon, and, if not objected to then, the Chairman will affix his signature thereto. After the disposal of the minutes of the previous meeting, all such matters as require the consideration of the Committee will be brought before them, discussed, and decided upon. For the dispatch of business, the Committee will at each weekly meeting appoint two of their number, to be called the "Active Committee," to superintend the ordi- nary business of the Club, and submit a weekly report of their proceedings. 24 SECRETARY AND MANAGER. As Manager, he will have the general control and superintendence of the Establishment, under the Com- mittee. As Secretary, he will attend all meetings of the Committee and Active Committee, — note their reso- lutions, and minute them in the books of their pro- ceedings. In all his written official communications, he will state expressly thut they are made by direction of the ''Committee. Besides his attendance upon the Committee, he will conduct the official correspondence of the Club, draw up Eeports, keep regular accounts of all the financial con- cerns of the Club, an account of the wine and other stores in the Stock Cellars of the Club, an account with the Butler and Housekeeper for wines and stores de- livered for the consumption of Members and for the use of the Establishment ; examine the accounts of the Tradesmen previously to their being submitted for final adjustment, and will pay the same when passed by the Committee. He will ascertain that all goods and provisions de- livered are in strict accordance with the orders given, and correctly charged in the Tradesmen's books, and will sign such books. He will attend to all communications, receive infor- mation upon all subjects connected with the business of the Club, and particularly all matters relating to the Members thereof. He will submit to the Active Committee a weekly statement of the receipts and disbursements of the Club. He will place before the said Committee for the time being, the Receipts for payments which have been autho- rized by the General Committee at its previous meeting, with the exception of such as are paid directly by the Treasurer ; and will pay over to the Treasurer, at least once a fortnight, all monies received by him. u- f H / k ^*«^VJ^ 25 HOUSEKEEPER. She will be responsible for the cleanlineBS and order of the house, — the conduct of the female servants, — the care of the Linen and general stores, will check the Linen, &c., both on its delivery to and return from the Laundress ; will receive and check all supplies of provi- sions, keeping an account of their weight and quantity, which she will report weekly to the Secretary ; and will see that good order and economy are maintained in the Servants' Hall. /f' STEWARD. The Steward will constantly reside in the Club House, and will have the custody of the Plate, Cutlery, China, &c. He will have the general control and supe. intend- ence of the Men Servants in his department, and be responsible for their conduct and cleanly appearance, and in case of misconduct will report the same to the Secretary. He will account daily with the Secretary for all monies received from the Members for supplies. He will make the established charges for all Provi- sions, Wines, &c., and cast up and receive from the Mem- bers the amount of their bills. jAKjf ^t^^ BARMAN. He will have the custody of all Wines, Liquors, Cigars, &c. He will account daily to the Secretaty for all monies received from the Members, and give in an account of all amounts due by Members for supplies received from the Bar. He will be charged with any deficiency which may occur in the stock of Wines, Liquors, &c., placed in his custody. 26 COOK. The Cook will have the immediate direction of the Kitchen department, and of the Assistants therein as far as concerns the performance of their duties ; — and will prepare the daily Bill of Fare, with the concurrence of the Steward, keeping all orders for the issue of the Kitchen supplies for daily comparison with the Dinner Bills, it being understood that no such supplies shall be issued without an order. HALL PORTER. He will enter in his book once a day the name of every Member coming into the Club House. Strangers calling to see Members will be shewn by him into the Reception Room, and intimation of their arrival immediately sent by him to the Member enquired for in the house. If a letter for an absent Member be applied for by another Member who may wish to forward it, the latter will be required to pay the postage (if any) and to sign an acknowledgement in the Porter's book of his having received the letter, in case of any future question. He will assist the Manager in the examination of ac- counts, making out orders for the issue of the supplies from the Kitchen, writing and dispatching of circulars, &c.. and make himself generally useful in the Establish- ment in such ways as the Manager may require. *^ WAITERS. The Yardman will light the Fires, saw and cleave Firewood, convey Fuel at proper times to the various apartments, clean knives, keep the Footway in front and Yard in rear of the House constantly clean, and perform all such other duties as the Manager may from time to time direct. i-* <^ GENERAL SERVANTS' REGULATIONS. No Officer or Servant will receive, under penalty of immediate dismissal, any present whatever from the Members or Tradesmen of the Club ; and any Trades- man detected in giving such will be forthwith discon- tinued, and never dealt with again. No Male Servant will absent himself from the Club -.'* House without leave from the Manager, nor Female Ser- ( vant without leave from the Housekeeper. No stranger will be admitted into the Club House except on business, and the Servants are strictly prohib- ^- ited from receiving visitors or followers. Dinner will not be served to the Servants after Two ' o'clock, P.M., except when they are prevented by duty from attending at the regular hours. No Linen, &c., will be washed by or for any Servant '% within the Club House. \ Eatables left on the dishes will be taken direct to the ''i Kitchen, and in no way appropriated by the Servants. Servants while on duty will not talk to each other, except on matters connected with their business ; and no Servant is permitted to address an individual Member in the house on matters either personal or relative to the concerns of the Club, all communications of the latter kind to be made to the Secretary for the information of the Committee. If any money or articles supposed to be the property of Members shall be found by the Servants in the Club House, they will be delivered to the Manager. 28 The Servants' entrance in rear will be under lock, and the key thereof be in the custody of the Steward; No application for re-instatement of a Servant who may have been dismissed on the representation of a Member, will be read or taken into consideration unless it come through, and be recommended by, the Memberon whose representation he or she was dis- missed. %^ T ENTRANCE HALL. No Stranger will be admitted to view the house unless accompanied by a Member, and then only between the hours of 12 and 4 in the day. No large boxes or articles of baggage belonging to a Member will be admitted into the Hall, and bags or port- manteaus sent by Members wishing to dress will be con- * veyed to the Dressing Room. • '* COFFEE ROOM. Breakfasts may be served from eight until eleven o'clock, A.M.; Lunches and Dinners from noon until eight o'clock, P.M. ; Hot Suppers from nine to ten o'clock, P.M. ; Cold Suppers up to twelve o'clock, P.M., and Li- quors, Tea, and Coffee up to one o'clock, A.M. ; after which no orders of any kind can be received unless spe- cially authorized by the Active Committee of the week, on timely application in writing to the Secretary. Members ordering dinner or luncheon will fill up their dinner bill themselves^ and not employ the waiters to do so. Articles of glass, earthenware, &c., which may be broken by the Members, either in the Coffee Room or elsewhere in the house, will be paid for by them. -jfe V. «» f^'M I MORNING ROOM AND UPSTAIRS ROOMS. No pamphlet, advertisement, or notice of any kind will be laid on the tables, or put up in the Club, by a Member ; but any pamphlet, &c., which it may be '^ -wished to make known to the Club, shall be sent to the Secretary to be laid before the Committee for ap- proval. Writing materials will be provided in the Morning Room. The Strangers' Boom is for the exclusive use of Mem- bers entertaining strangers, in accordance with Bulft 13, of the Constitution. ^ The House Dining-Room is appropriated for House dinners on such days as the Committee may decide ; on all other days any Member may engage the room, with the Card-Room adjoining, for a party of not less than six, provided he gives previous notice to the Porter, who shall enter it in the Book kept for this purpose, and on days when the room is not engaged, parties of not less than four can dine in the room, subject to its being oc- cupied by others if required. The Smoking Boom is appropriated exclusively to ^jSmokers, and Smoking is permitted in the Upper Bil- yliard Boom. • * Billiards during the day in the non-Smoking Billiard Boom, and said room used as Card Boom during the *^,evening; no smoking, except to parties playing, and Hhat with the permission of the Party. The charges for Cards will be 2s. 6d. per pack if new, and Is. 3d. if second-hand, and in addition each Player . shall pay Is. 3d. For Billiards, 7^d. for the English game of 32, or 6d. for the American game of 50 ; and Is. 3d. for the English game of 63, or Is. for the Ameri- can game of 100. No eatables beyond a Sandwich, Toast, or Biscuit will be Rllowed in any room besides the Coffee Boom and Strangers' Boom. No Servant will be allowed to enter the room where a general meeting is assembled. ) 30 DRESSING ROOM. Any portmanteau, bag, or bag|;age of any kind must be taken away immediately after use, and not allowed to remain in the Club House for future use. No servant of the Club will be employed by any Member to clean clothes, boots and shoes, or to assist him in dressing. No Member, except on special duty, nor servant of a Member, will be allowed to go down into the basement story of the house ; nor will any such servant be allowed to go into any other room than the Dressing Room, and then only to assist his master in dressing.
