. OUR PROVINCIAL METROPOLIS.

I HE changes wrought during the past fifty years have made Toronto an important
factor in the progress and advancement of the County and Pro\ ince ; while its rapid
and substantial growth in population, wealth and material resouices are fast maldng
it the chief city of the i^ominion. This being the case, there is a well-grounded con-
viction in the minds of many representative men that the time is opportune for
embodying in endurii\g form a detailed record of events covering the period
since the first settlement of the city and county.

In response to this urgent demand the undersigned is about to undertake the
publication of an Illustrated History of the City of Toronto and York County.

In the History of the City will be found, in separate chapters, a resume of facts
connected with its early settlement; our religious, charitable and educational institutions; the
learned professions ; the various societies, arts, manufacturers and mercantile interests.

In the event of sufficient encouragement being accorded the enterprise as to warrant publica*
tion, the volume will be printed on heavy calendered paper, from new type ; will be handsomely |
and substantially bound in half-moiv>cco, with gilt edges back and title stamp, and will contain
about 800 pages. In a word, it will be the publisher's aim to produce a book which shall not only
be a useful and reliable work of ref jrence in the library, but a source of pride and satisfaction to
the inhabitants of the Capital of thu 1'rovince and the Metropolitan County of the Dominioa

The literary portion of the work m'\\\ be in charge of gentlemen of acknowledged ability in
their several dep.irtments, prominent among whom may be mentioned Mr. G. Mercer Adam, "
and Dr. Mulvan\'. - Q^^e, -^zW — ipfT*'

As a large outlay will be entailed in the production of such a publication, a liberal patronage',
is necessary. If warranted by an experimental canvass, everything will be done to carry the work
to a successful and early completion.

To this end the cooperation of influential and public-spirited men in the city and throughout

the county is invited, and their cordial assistance asked, in giving such information as they only

can furnish to the staff of writers engaged, thus conducing to its completeness, accuracy and

value.
