OF ITS OBJECTS, The Natural History Society of New Brunswick is estalilished for tho purpose of promoting the study of the Physical Sciences, for effecting the formation of a general and Provincial Museum, and a Scientific Library, and for the purpose of facilitating the acquirement and dissemination of useful knowledge. ARTICLE II. or ITS CONSTIT0TION. 1. The Society shall consist of five classes, namely: OVdinary Members, Members for Life, Corresponding Member, Honorary Members, and Asso- ciate Members. 2. Members shall be persons desirous of forwarding the objects . of the Society. 3. Corresponding Members shall be persons residing at least ten uiiles from the City of St. John. 4. Members for life shall be persons who may make donations of $40 m money, in articles for the Museum, or books for the library (the two latter to be valued by competent persons); or who may be elected as such at the annual general meeting of the Society, for important services per- formed, and after due notice has been given. 5. Honorary Members shall be persona of high standing, who are eminent for their scientific attainments. 6. Associate Members shall consist of Ladies wto shall be instituted by the Council. 7. The Officers of the Society shall consist of a President, two Vice- Presidents, a Treasurer, a Corresponding Secretary, Recording Secretary, a Librarian, and three Curators ; all of whom shall be elected annually from the ordinary members, and shall be re-eligible. K. ARTICLE III. or THE KLK(TION OF MKMBKK.S. 1. All persons desirous of being admitted into the Society, cither an Ordinary Members, Corresponding Members, or Members for Life, must bo proposed agreeably to form (A.) in the Appendix hereto, which form must be subscribed by at least two members of the Society. 2, Honorary Meml)erB must be recommended by at least three mem- bers, who Khali certify that tiie candidate is a person eniinent for bis attain- ments in Science, .'J. Every recommendation of a candidate, as an Honorary Member, must be delivered to the Recording Secretary, who shall Bubn)it the same to the Council for enquiry ; and when the recommendation of such candi- date is approved by the Council, it shall be signed by the Chairman, and read at the first following ordinary meeting, previous to the ballot being taken. 4. The proportion of votes requisite for the election of any person, shall be at least three-fourths ot the ballot. 5. Whenever any person is elected an Ordinary Member, the Record- ing Secretary shall immediately inform him of the same by letter (according to form B. in the Appendix) ; and the election of Corresponding, Life and Honorary Members shall, likewise, be communicated to them by the same officer, as soon as possible, by a letter suitable to each particular case ; and no person shall be considered a member of any class until he has sig- nified his acquiescence in the election. 6. Every person elected an Ordinary Member is required to pay his first contribution within three months of the day of his election. 7. Ladies desirous of admission to the Society as Associate Members, shall have their names submitted to the Council through the Recording Sec- retary: and if approved, shall be instituted members of this class without election, of which institution notice shall be given according to form B of the Appendix. ARTICLE IV. OF THE ELECTION OF THE OFFICERS ANI» COUNCIL. 1 . The Officers of the Society with three members to form a Council, shall be elected annually by ballot at the General Meeting of the Society, on the third Tuesday in January. 2. The officers shall enter upon the discharge of their respective duties at the meeting following their election ; and the Council for the past year shall continue in office until that time. k ARTICLE V. OF THE CONTRIBUTIONS OF MEMBERS. 1. The first annual contribution of each Ordinary Member shall be the sum of $3, and the annual contribution of such member after the first, shall be the sum of $2. All contributions to be due in advance on the 1st day of January; and all new members to pay their contribution for the year in which they are elected, unless elected after the 1st day of October. k I ■ •> 2. No Ordinn, y meml^r whose annual contribution shall bo in arrears for one year, shall Im5 eligible to office, or to vote at any meeting of the Society ; and shoal.l such annual contribution remain unpuitl for two year, the member shall be notified personally to pay the same within twenty days ; and if the same should remain unpaid after the expiration of such notice, the name of such member shall be erased from the roll of the yociety at the next monthly meeting thereof. 3. The aj.nual contribution of each Associate Member shall be one dol- lar (*1), and Hhall become due at the same time as those of Ordinary Mem- bers, an.l Associate Members shall forfeit mendiership when default of payment for one year has been satisfactorily shown to the Council. ARTICLE VI. OF THK PRESIDENT AND VICE-rRKSIDEVTS. The President shall take the Chair at all meetings of the Society at which I e 18 present, and shall regulate and keep order h. the proceedings. It shall be his duty to state and put questions, according to the sense and intention of the meeting, and to carry into effect the Constitution and Bye- Laws of the Society. OP THE LIJJHARI.'LN AND CURATORS. .V, aI' '^^'^ '^"^^ "^ *''" Curators shall be to have the superintendence of the Museum; to take charge and care of all articles given to the Society and deposited with it, except when the same shall fall under the supervision of the Librarian. They shall ,tlso in concert with the Co.mnittecs, in the various departments, arrange, label and catalogue the articles and speci- mens contained therein. 2, The duty of the Librarian shall be to take charge and care of all books, papers, maps and drawings of the Society; to catalogue the books of the Library, and to issue them to the members of the Society in accordance with the rules, now and hereafter to be enacted, ARTICLE XL OF THE ORDINARY MEETINGS, 1. Meetings shall be held on the first Tuesday in every month, and the chair may be taken when five members are present. 2. The chair shall be taken by the officer or member entitled to the same ; the business of the evening shall commence at eight o'clock precise- ly, or at such hour as the Council may appoint, and be conducted in the order prescribed by the Bye-Laws, 3. The annual general meeting of the Society Hhall be held on the third lue8,lay in January, at 8 o'clock in the evening, to receive and deliberate upon the report of the Council on the Htate of the Society, an.l to elect the ofhcers and member* of the Council for the ensuing year ARTICLE XIII. OF TUB PROPKRTV OF THK .SOCIETY. 1. The whole of the proi)erty and effectH of the Society, of what kind •oever, shall be vested in the Council of the Society, and subject to its con- trol for the time being. 2. -Every paper, map, plan, or drawing, which may be presented to the Society, shall be the property thereof, unless there shall have been a previous arrangement to the contrary ; and the Council may publish fae same m connection witli their transactions, or with the consent of the author, in any other form. 3. No communication matle to the Society shall be published by any other pcraon but the author, without the previous consent of the Council. 4. No papers, plans, maps, or other property belonging to the Society, shall be taken out of the rooms thereof, without the conssnt of the Council, or in accordance witn a Bye-Law hereafter enacted; but every member shall have a right to inspect the same at such hours as the Cour.cil may direct. * ARTICLE XIV. OF DONATIONS, 1. The names of all persons who shall have contributed to the Museum or Library during the past year, shall be read at the annual general meet- ing ; and such persons shall be recorded as benefactors, in a book kept for the purpose, and in the published transactions of the Society. ARTICLE XV. No alteration of, amendment of. nor addition to this Constitution shall be made, except at the annual general meeting, and after a previous notice of at least one month, given to the Council, stating the subject and nature of such alteration, amendment, or addition by the member or mem- bers proposmg It ; and no such amendment nor addition shall be adopted except by a vote of /u,o. be announced. 4. Business arising out of the Minutes to lo acted upon. 5. Communications received since the lost meeting to be announced^ and read if required. 6. Communications from the Council to be brought forward. 7. Candidates to be balloted for. 8. Donations received to be acknowledged. 9. New business to be taken I'p. 10. Papers on the Lists to be read. II. It shall be competent for any member of the Societ., ro propose a qaestiou for discussion, and notice of such qut stion and of the subject of papers and essays presented for reading -\t any meeting shall be given beforehand to the members in such manner as the Council may determine. III. It shall be the duty of the Council to make such rules for the care of the Library and the issue of the book* to the members of the Society as they may deem necessary and proper. IV. Alteration 8 of these Bye-Laws may be made ai «uiy Ordinary Meeting, by a vote of a majority of the Ordinary Members present thereat — one month's previous notice of the proposed alteration having been given at an Ordinary Meeting of the Society.
