Upper Canada College, after a session most sue- on June cesaful year, closed its 30th. The examinations were in pro$;;ress daring the closing week, and the awards have been made. Last week the examina- tions for the J. Ross Robertson prizes were held. The calendar of the College gives the following as the conditions of these prizes : "The J. Ross Robertson prizes. Books to the value of $150 are annually presented to the College by J. Ross Rohertsob, Esq. , to be awaided in each form of the College for proficiency in Canadian history and geo- graphy. No boy will be allowed to take two prizes in the same school — that is, he may take it once in the lower, once in the middle, and once in the upper hchool, and to be eligible for the prize in tne upper school he must be a pupil of the College for at loast a year." . It is understood that the competition has been keen, and that the papers on Canadian histoiy and geography, prepared by an independent examiner appointed by Mr. Robertson himself, show that in | no school in the country are students better grounded in the history of their own country. Mr. Dickson, the Principal, in speaking of these piizes, said :— "This has been the most satisfactory examination, so far as the quality of the boys' work indicates, th«t 1 have ever seen in the College." These prizes were first given in 1883, and until 1886 were confined to the upper, middle and lower schools, after which they were increas- ed so as to cover the entire Olloge. From 1883 until 1894 about 20(10 volumes have been distributed in these prizes. The books embraced history, science, art, poetry, and standard literature, including sets of encyclopedias, Waverley novels, Tennyson's works and others of the best class of reading.
