How long does it require to take down and put up a set of barsi At least two minutes ; which if repeated three times a day for a year, amounts to 30 hours or three days of working time— which would yearly pay for a good gate. Or, examine it in another point of view-— three times a day, is 1800 times a year ; now, is there any man who would take down and replace a set of bars 1800 times in succession, in payment for a farm gatel Hardly r— yet this is the price paid by those who use bars that aro con- stantly passed, and the gate Is not obtained by it. Many err by attempt- ing to do a great deal with a little help; the consequence is, everything is hurried, and every thing behind-hand, and then, rliore help must be ultimately hired, or the work neglected at still greater loss. Would it not be cheaper to hoe an acre with three days' work, while the weeds are yet young, than to hoe them with ten days' work, when the weeds have attained a growth of two tons to the acre ? It would be cheaper to hire a man in time, at double price, and pay him with borrowed money at eighty per cent interest, than to permit the delay, though neither are necessjiry. tvixi ,71 -»1<» "'' nl:.y*> '' ' ■i—i ifn 1849. Let the holes be 6 or 7 feet across, and all the outer portions, or thos^ hot to be in immediate contact with the roots, filled beforehand, if convenient, with old rotted manure thoroughly mi!K«d with the Soil— this will give the young trees a vigorous start, uhtil they borne into bearing ; and in the meantime the whole ground should be gradually enriched by manuring the crops. It nirould be still better, if the ground for the young orchard could be w^ll pre pared for two years pretioutly. f.^ nt'^^M ti 71 »;;- I 1849. ^ , , . : APRIL begins on Sunday. It is belter to have smaller rooms or fewer of them,, with rich green trees and blooming shrubs in sight from every [Window, back as wdl as front, than to occupy a big house, with jbare fences, and rough grounds without. The man who doesj [not like the trouble or expense of keeping in order beds of! jornamental plants and flowering shrubs, may surround his house •with large, rich, massi\e shade trees, distributed singly and in jf^roups, which after, once under way, need no further attention than to k^ep the green grass closely shaved with the scythe beneath them. 1849. This Society offers the followiug advantages to parties insur- ing :-_ * The Premiums are as low as in any office of equal respecta- bility. Premiums may be paid yearly, half yearly, or quarterly. But half the premium for the first five years need be paid in cash, the party's own note being taken for the other half. The Local Board accept proposals for Assurance and grant Policies at once, without referring to London. No Charge is made for Medical Certificate, or if wished, for stamp duty. The bonus or share of Prpfits appropriated to the policy holder in this office, is declared annually, so that the asi^ured does not lose the benefit of any portion of the time he has been paying his Premiums, as he would do if he were insured in an office declaring a bonus every 5 or 7 years, and he should die at any time before the period of 5 or 7 years expired. In this office no such risk is run, the policy every year receiving its share or the profits. The distinctive feature of this Society is the " Loan Depart ment^** by which a policy holder is entitled to borrow a sum in cash equalin amount to two thirds of his payments. The loan is not for a temporary period, but may remain until his policy becomes a claim, if the interest is regularly paid. The great benefit of Life Assurance to all classes of persons, and especially to lliosc beginning the world with small means, !ia daily becomitig of greater importunce ; and as it becomes bel- jter uhderslood, will no duubt be much more generally attended to. A celebrated writer states that, '* nothing- is 'more un- certain than the life of a single individual." And it is a sense of this insecurity that first gave rise to Liife Assurance Socie- ties ; and in answer to objections sometin»es urged against their propriety, as implying a want of reliance on Divine Pro- vidence, the same writer observes that " provisions made by JLife Assurance are generally of :?o moderate a character as to ibe in perfect consistency with the spirit of Christianity, strictly! 'coMjes within the limits of that Divine command of providing jfor his own household, wiiich, whosoever neglects is worse than an! jlnfidel." It is particularly feeomniended and adapted to allj ivoung married men,and those about cjitering that honourablei jestate, both In town and couutry ; and while they are in theen- jjoynient of health, tiie continiiaiice (if which is as uncertain as life itself. Ninety percent, of the net profits are divided among the Policy Holders every five years. Applicants will receive every inlormalion and attention to their reque.«!ts, from the {Society's Agent at IJalilax, who lurnishcs all the necessary blanks and Medical Exiiiiiiner.
