OF HALIFAX, FOUNDED DY THE Very Reverend John JLousUuan^ JAN U AH Y 24th, 1841. St, Iflavy'N Tola! Alwtiwciice Society The Committee, to whom the revision of the lliiles of the St. ISIary'a Total Ahstinence So- ciety has been entrusted, have felt tliat they will not exeeccl the limits of the duty assigned them, if they, brieily, in a prefatory sket^ch, advert to the origin and progress of an nistitii- tion confessedly the vehicle of so much nsetul- iiess to the members of a community where its character and objecir are held in such general and high esteem. In the early part of the month of January, 1841, the subject of Tem- perance was recommended by the Right Rev. Dr. IVaser, Bishop of the Diocese, to the at- tention iA the Very Rev. John Loughnan. Parish Vriest of the City of Halifax, and Vicar Gene- ral of the Diocese, who, after serious reflection upon the propriety of introd :!ing its merits to the notice of Lis flock, finally determined to address them on the practicability of imitatmg the triumphant examples with which Ireland then beamed, and of establishing institutions for such and similar purposes in this Vicariate. At the conclusion of his address, he invited any twelve individuals to meet and consult with him on the subject, assuring them of his imme- diate and strenuous support, and of his own purpose to take the prescribed Pledge. In the course of the ensuing week, the Reverend gen- V i k \u ., i ti 'at :i^.\M..:ik.-M'iLf! ^Hm tleman had the gratification of being waited upou by fourteen or more members of his parish, and after deUberately weighing tiiu subject, they unanimously decided upon tho adoption of the Total Abstinence Pledge, as the one particu- larly suitable to the circumstances of the peo- ple, and as the most certain means of effecting the object they had in view. On the first. Sunday, the Very Reverend gen- tleman took the Pledge at the Altar, and innne- mediately after administered it to the Reverend Mr. Dease. The influence of their example failed not to produce a happy effect upon the infant Society, whose members continued to grow and increase to such extent, that the ag- gregate of names at present on the Book amounts to four thousand two hundred and tv>enty seven, an unimpeachable testim.ony to the zeal of its very Reverend President, Offi- cers, and Members. The character cf the In- stitution, and its acknovvledged utility upon the morals and consequent comforts of the poorer classes of the community, have silenced the cavils of the sceptic, and commanded the sanc- tion and admiration of every well-regulated mind. We subjoin the Imn of the Pledge, which comprises an intelligible and precise sum- mary of a member's duiios, and his solemn as- surance of fidelity in their fuliilmentc P 1^ El 2D C} E . / promise to abstain from all intoxicating drinks, c^c. except used medicinally^ and by order of a medical man ; and to discountenance the cause and practice of intemperance. The ceremony of admission takes plat e at the foot of the Altar, immediately after the vesper services of the Church, the applicant kneeling ; and on being interrogated by the Clergyman as to his perfect understanding of the obhgations of the Promise he is about to pronounce, and having given his aflBrmative answer, the Pledge is solenuily administered, and the name regis- tered in the Books of the Society.
