Wh^n about seve teen jears of age Le gave his heart to God, and his life to" ttio 8ervice of the Church, through whose instrumentality ho was induced to seek tbe Saviour, tix months after hii loaversion, his name was placed on the Circuit plan as i^n I 10 «xhortcr, iu wliuh capacity, as well d» that of local preacher, he laboured zealoua'y and successfully for Christ and for souls. At the York Conference of 1831, he vras re- ceived on probation for the Christian ministry ; and at the Hamilton Conference ot 1835, under ihe Presidency of the venerab'e "Wm Lor, ani was savingly oonve ted to God in the autu an of 1849 After spending ^ix years at Victoria College, and completing the course of study ia ' m ii ii- tihftt iDstittiiiou, he was received as • probationer fior th« work of the ChriatUn Hiaiitrj in Jna% 1859 \ and after about seven and a half jeart of faithful and useful li^bor, ha fell at his post on the Point Abino Misson, on the 13th of January, 1867. in the 3lst jear of his age. His disease, typhoid fever^ was brought on by excessive labor, and after a short but seveie illness of ten days, ter* minated fat*lly. But he was ready for the change. When first taken ill he said to his anxious and devoted wife, that if it were the will of the Lord he would like to live longer that he might do more to promote the ^lory of the Saviour, who had done so much for him, but immediately added— "But I am the Lord's — yes, blessed Jesus, I am thine j I how to thy holy will ;" and from that time his mind was calmly and sweetly stayed on God, assured thct as for him to live had been Christ, for him to die was gain. Bro. Shaw w^sc young man of most amiable disposition^ modest, kind, and unselfish, beloved by al! who kuew him, and most beloved by those who knesv Lim best. He vas a dutiful son, an atfectionate brother, a devoted husband, a trut) friend, and a sincere Christian. He possessed an improving mind, was a good scholar, a diligent student, a faitbfol pastor, and an earnest, practical, anoi useful preacher, and had he been spare J would doubt- less have risen to a h'gh position of influence and usefulness in the Church 3. Kkv. O'dKiS H. Ellsworth. The Rev. Orrin H. E Isworth was born in 1817. He wa« avrakened to a sense of his falleu condition, and savingly converted to God, when, about J 9 years of age. lie at once evinced, •' A yearning pity for iQaokind, A burning chaiitjr." Anxious to save souls from death, he began to exhort sinners to flee from the wrath to come, end, for five years, as a local preacher, faithfully served the Churi;h of hijs choice. In 1852 he was called, to devote hirnseh fully, to the work of the Christian ministry. Having travelled one year under the direction of the Chairman, he was "e- ceived on trial at the Hamilton Confrence in 185.?, «*W1, for the next fourteen ytars. travelled^ succes'iively ana successfully, in the following circuits: V'enna, Paris, t^tratford, Mitchell, Bayfield, and Kincardine; here, th« Christian warrior fell at his post, victorious. I ) If r; Mr. EUxworth was a truly goou man. In all the r«IatioDf which Lb oore to his familj, the Church, anu tae world. he adorned the Christian character; he enjoyed and preached a full galration. He was a faithful minister of JesuB Christ; his popula.Hy as a preacher rested not so lauth on the hrilliancy of bis efforts as the plainness and unaffected simplicity with wLich he presented the Tital truths of Christianity. He was particularly felicitous in introducing into his discourses illustrations from nature's open hook; arresting the attention of his audience, and, with the quickness of thought, seeding the barbed arrow to the conscience and the heart. Many a wanderer from God recognized in him a Kathan, saying to them, '' Thou art the man." Domestic and personal affliftion were alike home with becoming patience and submission. After his robust frame had become exhausted by waiting upon the sick, and he had seen his noble boy fall a prey to the malignant fever, biii time came to He down upon the bed of death. There he lay for nc.'»rly six long weeks, after his son s decease, till the brittle thread was severed Jesus was always felt to be near to comfort him. He did not seem conscious that the Master was about to call him home so soon. He thought that he would soon recover to cheer his sorrow-stricken companion, and to resume 1 is loved employ. But, when asked by one of his ministerial brethren, if he felt Christ dear to him, he replied, «||y — Saviour— precious " To another, he said, '« Religion is now my only comfort " And, when asked by another, if he felt ready, if the Master should call for him, he replied, *• Ready, morning, noon, or night. " Thus died our beloved biother Ellsworth, just having entered on the fiftieth year of his age, and in the fifteenth of his ministry. 4. Rev. Joum Black. The late Rev, John Black was born in the town of Gorey, County of Wk;xford, Ireland, September 18th, 1790. He was brought up under the teachings of the Church of England, of which his parents were rigid member i, but ^ ^\© '\ran,' (to use his own words,) •' with the giddy multi- * tilde in the bro»d-,7ay. forgetful of Goo and eternity." Having complied with the request of a near friend, in the year 1806, to hear a Methodist preacher, he was con- vinced under the sermon, " that the Preacher was a man of Uod," and himp«If a sinner, sure, if he died In his present I 1 nUiie, his lot v.ould be with the unhappy damned ; and the* conviction lay heavy on his heart for some timo. A seriee of very heavy afflictions brought baclc with power thoughts of Ood rnd Eternity, which had measurably declined. " I cried to God for mercy, Lord spare me a little longer that I may become acquainted with thee and with thy • people. The Lord heard my prayer, and he raised me up." He now became a constant attendant on the Methodist ministry, travelling some miles to reach the nearest appointment. At a prayer meeting in the year 1813 he was powerfully converted to God. '• All the day long Christ was my joy and my song, and I, one of the weakest of men, knew that he is a prayer hear* ing and a sin-forgiviog God." " I had my name enrolled with tho89 whom I esteemed the people of the Lord, and by wailing upon God I obtained spiritual strength " In 18 1 9 he was appoint d leader of a class, and from time to time exercised his gifts as an exhorter. In 1820 he emi- grated to Canada, and n 1824 at the call of the Presiding Eld^r, the late Rev. Htnry Ilyan, went out to labor as a Methodist itinerant on the Cornwall circuit. In his own expre-sive language, '' with Christ in my heart, and the prayers of the Church, I went out to warn sinners to flee from tha wrath to come. Lord help thy servant that I may preach Christ and him cruci6ed, and hold forth to the people a free, full, and present salvation." Thus he 'continued for thirty two years amid the priva- tions and arduous toils of the early itinerancy, travelling in succession the Cornwall, Rideau, Cobourg, Toronto, Perth, Mississipi, Ottawa, Peterboro', Bay of Quinte, Consen con, Colborne, Bath, Sidney, Napanee, Brighton, and Stir- ling Circuits, maintaining, as his journal shows, c ose com- munion with God, the most affectionate feelings to hi» colleagues, and solicitous concern for the souls committed to hid charge : at the close of a very arduous year, remark- ing, — «« I have heard that the iove of Christ draws men through ti e and through water, 1 know that his love and the worth of souls drew me through swamps and eettle- ments." In 1866 he was placed in a superannuated relatiflBft^ co>*. tinuing, how» ver, to labour as his strength would a. low, ob the Si iney and a joining circuits. In the fall of 1866 he was compelled by increasing infir* mUles to lay aside entirely the long loved and faithfuly lulfilled t48k of life. Much of the latter portion of this u time WM spent in silent retirement with God. " I lov« Jetus and Jesus loves me," was the simple and ezpreasiTe experience of these ciosintf fcenfi. IShortly before hi^ depature, in answer to sn inquiry of • friend concerning th« state of his miod, he answered with great f am* stness— " Peace, thank God, p-rlect peace," after wh.ch he s^nk into a stats of unconsciousness, till on the twenty-eighth or April, 1867, amid the tears of a lo^^ipg a d sorrowing pe pie. aod honoured and beloved by his breth- ren, th» s rvant of th Lord exchanged mortality for life, in the 76th ye<.r of bis a^e, and the 43rd of his ministry. H- waspos^jBS d of refined and gentlemanly m-inners, of a lo»in/ and hnmble spirit, much oppose i to censorious- ness, whivh be scrupulously avoided, and would reprove by silence, or Hudible ndmt nition, if indulwfd io in his pris- eoce. Until iutimately known he was of somewhat ecc^n- tr'c trrtits of charict r, but of ejqoi.ite ability in the mansgeraent of ihe Church, and he succdfc^ei to a decree rare'y bttaiucd in winning to himEolf the affe tiona of the people. He lived and dud honoured and beloved by all who knew him. 5. Thb Rkv. Gxorqk F. Plattib. The Rev. G. F. Playter was born in the city of Londouj England, in the year 1809. His first religious impressions were txperienced when he was but five years of age, while in the city of Exeter. Early in lifd there was awakened within him a love for literature. This love continued through all the mutations of life, and he has left behind no little fruit of literary toil. In his eighteenth year he was converted under the ministry of the Rev. J. Burgess. His opening christian life was marked by great conscien- tiousness, simplicity, economy, and liberality. isix 3 ears after his conversion he came to Canada, settled in Montreal, and after much prayer, me(iitation, and absti- nence, he clearly saw his providential path conducting to the itinerancy of the Wesleyan Church. He entered it, committing himself to the arduous and responsible work of the ministry with great self-distrust, yes, with strong re- Ij^^eouioa the promised help of Him who hath said. ♦ ho, i am with you alway, even unto the end of the world" The first (onference appointment of Bro Playter was to the Matilda Circuit, in lb34, under the superintendence of the Kev. J. Carroll — one whose loving heart, intellectual abilities, and miuistiirial experience eminently fitted him >«*»! ii^l )f 15 to cUeer in discouragement, and to guide in perplexity. The remaining years of his probation were spent in By- town, Gananoque, and Perth. He was ordained in King* ston, June, 1838. The six succeeding years were spent upon the Ottawa, Richmond, hidney, and Yonge Street Circuits. During a part of this time Mr. Playter gave himself laigely up to literary subjects, preparing two vol- uminous works for the press. These cost an immense amount of research and labour, and secured every houe that could be withheld from public duties. The manu- scripts are a monument of his patient, persevering, literary and unrequited toil. In 1 840 Bro. Playter issued his '< Voice from Canada." He was a writer of great power, clearness, and logical force. In 1844 he we^ elected Editor of the ChrUtian Guardian^ and retained that oflSce for two years. The following year Mr Playter was appointed to Belleville and Shannonville, and the succeeding one, 184 7 to Norwood. At this period our departed brother passed through great mental conflicts. The question of retiring from the active ministry, which had previously perplexed bim, recurred, and pressed itself upon him with accumulated force greatly harrassed him. He mentally debated the point long and anxiously, and finally determined to retire from the itinerancy. That he might have greater facilities for publishing the works he had carefully prepared in manuscript, he purchased a press and established himself in the town of Picton. He con- tinued in connection with the press there for two years. This, in after life, he re* arded as a grave error, and he sincerely regretted the false step he had ta'en. Though honestly designing to do right, ho became fully conscious of the error of his judgment, and returned to the eflfective work in 1849, when he was appointed to Brightou, where he remttinedfor three years The remainder of his work, as a travelling preacher, extending over a further period of six years, was performed on the Kawdon, Napanee, and Waterloo Circuits. He retired upon the Superannuated List in 1858, taking up his abode upon his own farm within the bounds of th-.^ Frankfort ( ircuit His History of Mkthodism j^^nab^ was here completed. One volume alone was issued, «nd is a volume of g eat interest LiKo many other a itho s, bow- ever, Mr, P. did not find publishing to be remunerative and the financial loss entailed upon him by the issue of his first Yolume, induced biax to suiipend the issue of his second. >' f 16 He lived to eompUU the History, leaving in manuscript ready for the press another volume, bringing the whole down to the year 1847. As a preacher and as a writer, Bro. Playter wag more forcible than elegant Strength rather than splendour ap- peared both in his writings and in his sermons. A down- right honest and independent man, he contented himself with the naked statement of facts, and the plain exhibition of truths, without the slightest attempt at adornment. Perhaps he would have added to his fame and not have impaired his usefulness had he been less indifferent to all embellishment. But he was satisfied to present his thoughts clearly before the public, and apparently anxious to do so in as few words as possible. His sermons were reaarkable for their clearness. He uttered nothing at laniotn, nor anything not worth the uttering. Through his whole christian course he sought to live a godly life. He was a man of \ raver and of deep devotion. His profers&ions were not loud, but he was a siucere, humble lover of the Saviour During his last illness our dear brother was fiercely as- «iaulted by the enemy, but his confidence in his God was unshaken. He was made very happy, and this happiness continued till raised to the enjoyment of the fullness of joy in his Father's presence He suffered long, and at times severely ; but he received promised grace in required measure. He was a true Wesleyan. With the sermons of John, and the hymns of Charles, he was very familiar ; and some of his last verbal efforts were to repeat stanza after stanza of the incomparable lyrics of the peerless Charles Wesley. He died in " the full assurance of hope," on W'ed- nesday, the 24th of October, 1866, in the fifty-fifth year of his Rge, and ia the thirty-second of his miaistry. 6. Rev. Thomas Campbell. Our deceased brother was born of pious parents, members of the Wesleyan Church, in the north-west of Ireland, who brought him up in " the nurture and admonition of the Lord." The family emigrated to this country, about forty ye^ars ag^o^^^imd settled in Canada East. In 1832 he attended a serieij of religious services cohduoted by th-> late Rev. Wm Squire, in Montreal, when ho became deeply concerned for the welfare of his soul ; and, while the congregation were singing the doxology, he was enabled to believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, to the saving of his soul. He was 17 •liortly afterwards appointed to the oftlces of claf«-leftf Leeds,, Yorkshire, where be resided for several year«, during which p-riod he became truly converted to Qod in 1857 Mr. Becson came to Canada, and connected himself with the Wesieyan Church, In 1858 he waj admitted on trial by the Conference, and appointed to Chatham. In lb60he was appointed to> the city of Hamilton, and laboured with great acceptance to the people In 1864 he was received into full connexion with tae Conference, and ordained, and was appointed to the Chaudiere Mission, in connection with the city of Ottawa, where be was universally beloved. An insidious disease began to develop itself teHhe first year of his labours in that place ; but, during the second year, it assumed a mitligoant type; and, after paiofuiiy aevere and protracted sufToring, terminated in death. 18 Daring hii illneii pati«ace had iis perfect work, and a heavenly sweetness marked all his conversations. He en- Joyed a full assurance that all would be well, whether life or death. Rusting on the precious atonement, he rejoiced greatly in the possession of an unwavering conAdence ia the blessed Saviour, and a glorious hope of immortality. He died in peace, on Thursday, the llth of May, in the 37th year of his age and sitth of his ministry. His death deprives the Church of a valuable labourer in the Lord'a vineyard. Our loss is his gain. Ques. VII. The Treasurers of Victoria Collcpc, in presenting llieir Report to the Annual Mcetinfr, in addition to the presentation of their u*«ual BalHnce Sheet, wouM briefly review the proceedings of tie past — especial y of the past year — in which they see much tliat caniidt fail to call forth the devout gratitude of the friends and patrons of that useful Institution. The position in which it is now placed may be in apreit measure attributed to 'the steady, persevering efforts of the Beard in the midst of much dii^courngement and frreat embarrabsments arising from various causes, lo execute and complete the arrangements which were entered into by the Annual Meeting in 1863. The following extract froiii a ibcmer Treasurer's Report may serve to jiivo some idea of the exceedingly depressed financial state of the Institution prior to the making of tlmse arraDi:e- ments :— '• Since the preseatution of the, hahtn*-eshec.f^ the June qaartcrly salaries have hnd to be proviihd for, and the result is that the Ttensurcr hnsorerdrawn to the amount of the Government grant, so that for the remainder of the year no means are proridfd for the heavy O'Vay of interest, salaries and incidentals. The fnnncial state of the College is nam swh that the whole machinery must be >topped, or soine means pro- vided for liquidr the lupport of their families. Thus the machinery was kept moviag until suffioient money could be raised by .4««Eominion of Canada^ i} AH of which is reepeetfally submitted, ;; , ' :^:;:^.A-,:-K-f, KicHARD Jones, WMr K£&R> JScretiM, with the ed to be )a8t year. Dearly Beloved Chethren, — '* Grace be unto you and peace from God the Father, and from our Lord Jesus Christ, who gave himself for our sins, that he mip;ht deliver us from this present evil world, accordiiifTj to the will of God and our Father, to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen." Not merely as an annual custom do we thus greet you, but we heartily rejoice in the opportunity thus fiven us to testify ou- unabated love to you in Christ esus, and our ear jest desire that the bonds by which we are united may never be relaxed ; but that by mutual and zealous affection and undiminished energy, we may as pastors, fulfi.ll our obligations to God ; *' Ye also helping together by prayer for us, that for the gift bestowed upon us by the means of many persons, thanks may be given by many on our behalf. For our re- joicing is this, the testimony of our conscience, that in simplicity and godly sincerity, not with fleshly wis- dom, but by the grace of God, we have had our conver- sation in the world, and more abundantly to you-ward." The review of the work of God this year has occa- iioned both gratitude and humiliation. We praise God with joyful hearts that our labour has not been in vain '»^ \ •* 'I I- f i iiiiiii>iiiiwiliTiii»iJiil '^'iji^'^'ii&ui. . ~ — '. ? i ! !;'!-" "- :J^ * -^w>t»*iii.iiiiiiiii,ii,.;,i;„ m 100 in the Lor^l. The numerical increase of our societies has exceeded that of many former years. The returns show a nett gain of 1689 persons, viho have b'^en brought into church-fellowship Tvith ue. Yet there is no cause in this for boasting, but rather •would we humble ourselves before God. "When we consider how great a number of ministers, local preach- ers, leaders and other official persons are united together for the professed purpose of bringing the world to Christ, it would seem that the results of our conjoint labours should be greater than they are. For ourselves, Tve resolve before God to consecrate ourselves anev and with apostolic courage, amidst abounding iniquity, and insidious error, to preach with more fervency and simplicity the glorious gospel of the blessed God. Suffer us, dear brethren, to remind you of what may be considered the chief hindrances to spiritual growth in the Church, and progressive power ever the world. It is much to be feared that many who nominally hold fellowship with us, are embarrassed and impeded in everything that tends to Christian vitality and ac- tivity, by the worldly spir't which they cherish, and by yielding unduly to the secalar tendencies of the times. These destroy all relish for private devotion, and the thoughtful reading of the word of God. Family worship is neglected, and those who should have daily presented to them a living example of the divine life, are led to infer that religion is a mere profession, and the service of God a secondary matter — not the one thing needful. The secularity against which we affectionately warn 70U, has many and fearful collateral evils : most prom- inent is the inattention paid to the children and young persons who constitute the household, in all that relates to their conversion and reHi^ious culture. While tho Saviour is heard in the geniie breathings of his Divine loTe 8ay;ng, •' Suffer the Uttle children to come unto me," multitudes of these liitle ones a^e, by the care 101 lessness of parents and the neglect of the Cliurob, consigned to Mammon or to Moloch, and become the helpless victims of avarice, of pride, of selfishnjss, or of frigid forqialism. The desire for religious im- provement and mental culture is not awakened, or not encouraged. The young people of our families are left without religious literature or godly instruction, and the ministrations of the pulpit are ineffectual to minds thus neglec'.^d, and vacant, or pre-occupied by plans or thoughts wholly vain and worldly. A greater degree of attention must be paid to the baptized cliildren of our Churches : they must be treated as belonging to Christ; and you who are parents should earnestly unite with us in more general efforts for the salvation of our youth. The Conference having considered this important sub- ject, as set forth by Mr. Wesiey, and published in our Discipline, resolves to labour an ! pray more for our youth ; and we entreat you, dear brethren, to co-operate with Consider the value of souls — the love of Christ to children — the loss the Church sustains by reason of indifference — and by personal and united exertions let us snatch the rising generation from Satan's grasp. Wherever the family altar is broken down, re-erect it — galher around it your children and house- hold, and therebv acknowledge God — seek his favour, which IS better than life, and "glorify God with your body and your spirit which are His." ' ■ As a mci ns ot promotintr personal religion and the revival of We work of God, we again earnestly and affectionately entrent you not to neglect those special means of grace, wb^ch have been, from the beginning, the strength and glory of the Connexion — our class- meetings and praycr-meeting3. The neglect of these in many places painfully accounts for spiritual dearth, and the lamentable want of success to ministerial la- bour of which complaint is frequently made. Success cannot be expected where the members of the Church neglect the means of christian fellowship and prayer. ■V > I I I ,i^ * t|i ^r-- ■■■»>-'¥, f 1 1 " ' ' *"~"T"T^■Tw^' l l^t l 1M i ^ i ^i^i^Dj^^i ^r^ i ^ m ||; •>-•> > ■ ••ii"'' yi loa Your own peace and prosperity depeuvl on fidelity, and with the fruits of righteousness there will follow showers of grace, and glorious revivals of religion, ; We cannot refrain from referring io those political changes which are shortly to be eifected for the govern- ment of this country. The Dominion of Canada, era- bracing several Provinces, has been established by Imperial authority, invoked by the cseveral Local Parlia- ments. Within a very short period those who possess the elective franchise will be required to exercise it. In the heat of political conflict there is great danger of los- ing sight of the claims of religion. Use your rights in the fear of God, and be not led into the extremes cf partizanship. Eschew every tendency to an undue spirit of strife and contention. Cultivate peaceful rela- tions with those who differ from you in judgment, and pray that God, "by whom kings rule and princes decree justice/' may guide the future of our expanding Dominion, and establish the confstitution on a firm and immovable basis, an imperishable gem in the crown of our beloved Queen Victoria. You will be gratified to know that our C mnexional Funds have been sustained and increased, but it is fielt to be a cause of regret that the Fund for the support of Superannuated Ministers, and the Widows and Orphans of deceased Ministers, is not commensurate with the demands made upon it, and it is painful to state that the comparatively small amount allowed to the claimants has been diminished by one-tenth. The Conrerence therefore earnestly entreats all the members of our Church to consider the necessities of our worn-out Ministers, and manifest a practical sympathy for ihe widows and children, most of whom are exclusively df jendent on your christian liberality. So deeply im- pressed were the ministers of the Conference with this f ct, that they have unanimously agreed to raise their own annual subscription from four to five dollars. 103 Our Educational Institutions —the Importance ef which cannot be over-estimated— are, through the Divine blessing, in a state of prosperity. The embar- rassing debt, which for so long a time impeded the operations of Victoria College, has been extinguished by the generous liberality of numerous friends, and the report of that Institution, brought before the Con- ference, is most encouraging. We again commend the College to your eonsideratioH. and doubt not but that many of your sons, and sons' sons, will receive the benefits of a sound religious education, fitting them for spheres of usefulness and honour ia our beloved •country. ^ We eomraend to your notice the Female College at Hamilton as an Institution eminently worthy of sup- port, in which your daughters will receive a thorough ■education, and by careful culture become th-e ornaments and strength of society. We rejoice to assure you of its prosperity^ and the growing interest which is mani- fested towards it throughout the country, and which, we tiLst, will continue to increase. The Conference ha-s been one of great interest, and characteriied by cordial harmony during the discussion of important and exciting subjects. Our religious services have been attended by t'le divine blessing. The dell unction of the Holy societies is 63,262 ; being an increase of 1,689 during the year ; the whole number of ministers in our Con- ference is 612, including Superannuated Ministers and Preachers en trial. Our Female College numbers 140 pupils; our Victoria University includes 63 under- graduates in Arts, 8 in Law, 223 in Medicine, and 58 pupils in the preparatory school. We have 721 Sabbath Schools, in which there are 4S,4f95 pupils, (of whom 3,606 meet in class;) 6,906 teachers; with 118,967 volumes in the libraries We occupy seventeen Indian Missions, on which there are 2,044 church members, speaking three diflfijrent Indian tongues; we have 140 Domestic MIssicas, including 18,691 church menbers, and on which there are 193 ministerial labourers. Thus, in Canada alone, (irrespective of those in Hudson's Bay and British Columbia,) we have up- wards of 200 Missions, on which the Gospel is preached in six different languages, and which are entirely supported by the liberality of our congregations. In the last official census of Canada, upwards of 350,000 of the population returned themselves as adherents to Methodism ; and we believe a much larger number are attendants upon our ministry. But W3 are far from satisfied with this measure of success; we are humbltd and abased that it is not many fold greater. We believe, with the agencies we employ, and the fields of labour opened to us, that wo ought to gather thousands to Christ, where we gather only hundreds. We have humbling and painful searchings of heart on this subject; we renew our cov- enant engagements with our Divine Master and with each other ; to pray with and for each other whenever we meet, before parting, as far as possible ; to talk and pray with others, whenever prarticable, in regard to their soul's salvation ; to seek a deeper baptism of the Holy Spirit, that we may be at all times enlightened, empowered, and anointed for every part of our great work, and find in it our meat and our drink ; to be k. >J«J*. JW J< mm 107 instant in season and out of season, always abounding in the work of the Lord ; looking for the fullness of the blessing in our own souls, and in our congregations. We believe that we whould be much assisted in these great purposes by the example, sympathies, and labours of one of the n ost approved members of your own body; and we therefore venture to suggest and solicit your appointment of the Ueverend William Morley Puncheon, A.M., as our next President, with the request that he muj be permitted to travel through our connexion, the current year ; believing, ss we do, that his counsels and ministrations will, under the Divine blessing, greatly edify us and our people, immensely benefit our entire Church and country, and contribute largely to consolidate, into one mighty community, Methodism throughout British North America. We beg to recommend for your approval and appoint- ment, as our next Co-Delegate, the Rev. Lachlan Taylor, D.D., — a brother loved and honoured amongst all the evangelical Churches on both sides of the Atlantic. We also desire the continuance of the Rev. Dr. Wood in the oflGice which he has so long and so honourably filled. We have been favoured and deliglited, during our present Session, with the presence and communications of Delegates from the Wesleyan Conference of Eastern British America, and of f^everal niea)bers of the Con- ferences of the Methodist Episcopal Church in the United States, our elder and beloved brethren in the one wide-spread Methodist Church of America. Our present Session has been one of great harmony and much spiritual profit ; we go forth with one mind and one heart, to our appointed fields of labour : en- treating an interest in your supplications, and im- ploring the richest outpourings of the Holy Spirit upon you and upon ourselves, that we may be holy, faithful, and successful in the work of our Lord Jesus Christ, Ir -m t1 ♦ s Signed on behalf and by order of the Conference of fca Wesley an Methodist. Kevirend and Dear Brethren,— *'*:-;' Wo thank you for your affectionate Address, and for your excellent Deputation, in the persons of the Reverend Doctors Richey and Pickard — brethren hon- ored and beloved — to whose communications we have listened with great interest and delight. We refer yoa to thera for information in regard to the state and progress of the work of God amongst ourselves. We may simply state that we have received 1^ young men on trial at this session, and 23 young men into full connexion, after a satisfactory probation of four years; that we number 612 Ministerial lab- ourers, includiiig Superannuated Ministers and Preach- ers on trill ; that the number of members in our Soci- eties is 58,262 ; that we have 193 Missionaries, and 20,735 members on our Domestic and Indian Missions, supported entirely by the liberality of our congregations, apart from the distant work in which we co-operate with the Parent Society in Hudson's Bay and British Columbia ; that our Female College numbers 140 pupils, and our Victoria University includes 63 Under* graduates in Arts, 8 in Law, and 223 in Medicine, and 58 pupils in the preparatory school ; that we have 72 1 Sabbath Schools, including 6,906 teachers, 48,4.95 pu- •--■ -'fp jm I : 110 pile, (of whom 3,600 rae^t in class,) and 118,970 vol- umes in tiie libraries. Our people have erected a larf:5e number of excellent churches during the year, and we have had gracious revivals on many Circuits. We have not thought it expedient, the present Ses- sion, to form several Annual Conferences, with one General Legislative Conference ; and upon no other plan, as we are given to understand by your Represen- tatives, is it li^3ly that yoa would be willing to estab- lish a more intimate ecclesiastical connexion with the Wesleyan Methodist Conference and Church in Canada. But though we yet remain separate and distinct bodies, we are one in heart, in doctrine, in worship, in church polity, in usages, in operations and aims ; and we trust that at no distant day we shall be more perfectly united together in one great Christian community of Confer- ences and Churches. Our greetings will be presented to you by our beloved Brother, the Rev. Lachlan Taylor, D.D., whose visit to your Conference will, we trust, strengthen our bonds of Christian fellowship, and be promotive of those com- mon sympathies which animate us as members of the great Methodist family. We go forth to our appointed fields of labour resol- ved with renewed devotion and fidelity to consecrate ourselves to our great work of spreading scriptural truth and holiness thnughout the land ; and wo unite our earnest prayers with yours, that God will pour upon you and us both the unction ot His Holy Spirit, for the office and work of the ministry in those portions of His vineyard which He has respectfally assigned to us. The intercourse which we had with your honoured and highly esteemed representatives at the London Conference of 1865, the Reverened Charles Elliott, D. P., and the Rev. George Peck, D. D., was of the most delightful character. Their discourses and counsels were most graleful and edifying ; and at the present Conference our hearts have been warmed and enlarged by the cheerful, intelligent, learned, and Christian com- munications of the Rev. W. Nast, D. D., who has ren- dered most valuable assistance to us in the German de- {>artment of our Missionary Work. We revere and ove these estimable brethren, and rejoice to feel that in this distinct and unquestionable manner you coaUoue 1^ Jll Ir 112 to attest the lirieal and unbroken connection tlmt enisTs between the Methodist Episcopal Church and the Wes- leyan Mothodifet Church in Canada. The rcstoiration of peace to your great country by the termination of tho fratricidal rebellion, originated for the defence of a system, " tlio sum of all villainea;" to- gether with tlie complete overthrow of that giojantio in- iquity, has filled our hearts with gratitude to God, while we sorrow deeply in considering tho dreadful sacrifice of blood and treasure by which your amazing conquests have been achieved. We sympathized with you in your sufferings, we rejoice with you in your successes, and wo pray God that you may be fully endowed for tho fulfillraetit of those weighty responsibilities which in your case are the necessary result of victory. You have before you the greatest work ever under- taken by a Christian people ; the education and train- ing of millions of ignory^nt and once enslaved persons, to fit them for the enjoyment of freedom, and to enable them to discharge the duties of free citizenship. God has preserved to you national unity ; and we earnestly pray that with progressive power and influence, you may, in union with the Christian people of Great Britain and other nations help to spread throughout the world the blessings of heavenly light and Christian civilization. We are in this country passing through a transition state of comparative colonial isolation ; and by the es- tablishment of the Dominion of Canada, embracing Heveral Provinces under one Confederated Government, are assuming a status of nationality, calculated to pro- mote our growth and prosperity. But we are not insensible to the solemn truth that ** except the Lord build the house, they labour in vain who build it; " and as our responsibilites- are augmented, so are we resolved to increase our evangelical efforts for the salva- tion of our country, and the universal spread of Scrip- ture holiness. • • ''tfV^:W. :f Jf .Ttf«M'T**'!t« kte' »W^'- A'0»>- — 3y Iho 1 for " to- io in- wliilo nifice (uests your 9, and 'or the ich in lis Oar bolovod Methodism has devolopcd itaelf largcFy within th«4)aat ftnv years.
