 EXTRAORDINAR T.

 Montreal, May i6, 1814.
 Highly Important,

 NEW-Yi;RK, May y.
One of the firft mercantile houfes in this City, lias re-
ceived a letter from the Supercargo of a neutral veflel, m
a long pafTage from Gottenburg dated oflF N. London,
May 4,ftating that that day he vsras boarded by the £ngl»»n
(hip Bulwark, of 74 uns, and informed that he couianot

St into any port of the United States. The capuin ot
e Balward informed, that he was direft from Bermuda,
an.l that the Admirai(Cochranp) had ordered the block-
ade of the whole Ameiican coaft, from Eaftport to New
V Orleans. — That la«;e accounts had been received from Eh-
Ijland, announcing that anr ARMISTICE was figned be-
tween Bonaparte and the Allies on the 5th of March—
and that there would be Peace on the Continent. That a
formidable force was preparing^ithEnglrnd for this coun-
 try.

The above veffel being fhort of provifioBtf was going
 to Halifax.

 The Negociatiom

 London, March) a;
We certainly did hope to witnefs the complete over-
throw of the aiflual government of France, and that luch
alfo was the fincere with of the greater majority of his
Majeffy's miniilers, is a truth which cannot be contro-
verted. We do not hefitate to aflert, that the opinion of
the cabinet was deci4ediY exprefled in favour of the
ftrenuous co-operation of this country, to accomplifh fo
delirable an end. The defpatches brought by Mr. Rob-
infon produced, however, an effeA ditedlly contrary to
thofe wiihes. An ini'uperable obihcle to any plan which
might for its object. have the dethroning & denationalizing
of Bonaparte was found in one of the leading powers of £u.
rope^ confederated as they were for chaflifiug the fernci-
ty and exiinguifhing the ambition of the common enemy.
That power was Aufkria. The Emperor Francis was in*
deed willing to check trie inordinate encroachments of
the ruler of France, to fet fixed and precife bounds to his
territoral influence, vaflalsiges and dependencies, to infill
upon him in the heart of his own dominions retributive
punifhment ; but there he flopped. He could not con-
fent that his fon-in-law fliould ceafe to reign. The ar-
gument and entreatiesofRuflia,ofPruf&a, and of England,
proved equally unavailing, and it was found necef^ry to
yield to the infiexibie determination of a power which,
by a fingle movement of roo,ooo men could turn the
icales that held the balance of Burope; The relu<^ant,
the forced, the painful acquiefcecce of Alexander and of
