BULLETIN No 380 HEADACHE POWDERS i',»3i:}- ,ji£ NOTE 7 In Bulletin No 360, page 7, I have referred to the fact that a number ot articles which are essentially nothing more than Baking Powders are offered for '•all' under names which involve the use of the word "Egg". These articles so far as they have come under my notice contain a yellow (l>c, evidently intended to suggest the presence of egg-yolk. Some of these articles contain small amounts of protein matter in the form of casein, gelatin ir powdered dessicated egg, but in no case is the amouift of such material so great as to justify their being offered as Egg substitutes or Egg Powders. The phrase Eger Powder will be interpreted by this Department as equi- \ alt tit to powdered egg, and if other material than powdered egg is present it will l)f aquired that the label shall state this The term Egg Substitute is le^ 1 Iiarac'ter and food value the article is . r kided that both as to physical : to egg material. The use of a yellow dye in any ai;i"le cSaiminp to be Powdered Egg or Egg Sll!)^titute or so named as to imply that the article is an egg powder or an egg siil)stitute, will, unless the article actually meets the requirements for Egg Pow- below permitted maximum, wc interpret the above section of the Act as perrn.t- ting th second drug in such amount only as may be considered complementarx to that in which the lirst i present. For example, ^^hen one gram acetan.l.de .^ present. 2.5 grains phenacetin may also be present; but no more. Aspirin (acetosalicylic acid) is not specifically named m the Patent Medi- cine Act. Iheresults of analysis may be thus summarized : Sampler, which meet legal requirements without detla- ration of drug ** which declare drug present 31 Adjudged as doubtful 2 Adjudged as adulterated ^^ Total »02 One sample classified as doubtful, shows a decided excess of acetanilide in one powder, but another powder is within legal limits. The discrepancy may be due to carelessness in weighing out the material on the part of the manufacturer: and it is open to question whether or not such irregularity should be permitted to escape penalty. ,• . , l The second sample so classified, declares the presence ol Antikamma which is a mixture of acetanilide with bicarbonate of soda. It is questionable whether or not the use of the term antikamnia may be accepted as tantamount to a statement that acetanilide is the active drug. Adulteration consists in the presence < f more than the permissible amount of the active drug, without declaration of the presence of such drug on the label. We have made previous inspections of Headache Powders, as below : Bulletin No. 113- January. 1906 30 samples. Acetanilide found in 28 samples. Bulletin No. 230- Dec. 1911 150 samples. Acetanilide found in 118 samples. Bulletin No. 26*- Sept 1913 171 samples. Acetanilide found in 139 samples. I would respectfully advise publication of this report as Bulletin No. 380.
