On motion of Mr. Payne, " Ordered, that the Clerk of this House, do obtain from Mr. Hawkins, a copy of his ' Plan of Naval and Military Operations before Quebec in 1759,' a work illustrative of that interesting portion of History, so memorable of the prowess of the British Arms, and Death OF THE ILLUSTRIOUS WoLPE ; also a copy of his History of Quebec, for the purpose of being placed in the library of this House." Extract from proceedings dated City Council^ Halifax^ Mova Scotia, Dec, 26, 1842 : ^' Resolved unanimously, That it is the opinion of this 5 Council, that Mr. Hawkins deserves the highest credit tbi the labour and untiring zeal which he has manifested in getting up his Plan of the Military and Naval Operations of the British Army before Quebec in 1759, exhibiting at once a comprehensive view of one of the most distinguished events achieved by the British Army, feel much pleasure in recommending it to the support of their fellow citizens, and that this Council do subscribe for the said work," (Copy) CU}f' Hallf St, John, Mew Brunswiekf Feby.e, 181.3. On mocion ot Alderman Peters : Resolved unanimously, That his Honour the Recorder be requested to communicate to Mr. Alfred Hawkins, in answer to his letter, addressed to his worship the Mayor, and express the pleasure felt by the Corporation of the City of St. John, in declaring the high sense entertained by this Board towards him, as the author and publisher of the splendid Plan of the Naval and Military Operations before Quebec in the year 1759, under the immortal Wolfe ; and they have much satisfaction in requesting that he will furnish one copy, to be framed, and placed in the Council Chamber of this City, in commemoration of that glorious achievement which secured to the British nation so valua. ble a territory as her North American Colonies, and to those Colonies the blessings of British Liberty. From a thorough knowledge of the environs of Quebec, having resided there for ten years, the greatest part of that period on the Plains of Abram, and from a general acquaint- ance with the operations of 1759, as detailed in various publications, and as described by individuals who had a share in those operations, I feel warranted in recommend- 6 ing Mr. Alfred Hawkins's Plan as well deserving the atten- tion of those to whom it is dedicated, and the patronage of the British public. '* In the performance of the agreeable task delegated to me,T most cordially felicitate you on the good taste exhibited by you in the choice of the subject of your labours, destined as it is to extend a knowledge of so interesting a part of our history ; also on the able and elegant manner in which the whole has been completed. Aware of the difficulties you had to encounter, and the sacrifices you were necescarily obliged to make, I feel impelled to compliment you on the energy and perseverance displayed by you in relation to the mattf r.
