This year marks a memorable epoch in the life of tlie venerable pastor of St. Patrick's. On March sth, he cele- brates the Golden Jubilee of his priesthood. His devoted people have not been unmindful of the event; and f(»r some time past they have been looking forward with pleasure to the occasion when they would offer him a token of their love and esteem, and join with him in thanking Almighty God for the graces and blessings He has bestowed upon him during the fifty years of his priesthood. Mgr, Carmody was born in Groom, Gounty of Limerick, Ireland, on the 3rd March, 1822. At an' early age he expressed a desire to study for the priesthood, and from that time, it became the sacred care of his pious parents to encourage his holy aspirations. He was accordingly sent to the Seminary in Youghal, Go. Gork. where he prosecuted his earlier studie.-', and afterwards made a distinguished course in Theology, in All Hallow's Gol- lege, Dublin — that teeming womb of missionary priests, who have carried the light of the Gospel to every coun- try in the world. At All Hallow's he was ordained priest, on the 8th of March, 1845, by His Grace Archbishop Walsh, the first Archbishop of Halifax. After spending a short time with his relations and friends, the young priest set out for the field of his future 15 labours. He sailed from Waterford, on the 10th of April, 1845, and arrived in Halifax on the 20th Mav — a lone: passage it seems to us in these days of ocean greyhounds. Since then, Father Car mod v has ministered in most of the lahourous missions of the Archdiocese — Yarmouth with Tusket Wedge, Meteghan with Salmon River, St. Croix with Weymouth, Couberie. T)igby and Annapolis, Chezzetcook with Ship Harbour. Tangier, Sheet Harbour and Quoddy, Rerring Cove with Ferguson's Cove, Ketch Harbour and Prospect, Windsor with Wolfville, and St. Patrick's, Halifax, where he has laboured for the past seventeen years. While yet but a young priest, he was made Canon of the Cathedral by Archbishop Walsh. On the death of Very Rev. Mgr. Power, in the year 1887, he was appointed Vicar General of the Archdiocese, and in the month of June, 1892, he was honored by His Holiness Pope Leo XTII, who raised him to the dignity of a Private Cham- berlain. 16 FROM THE PEOPLE OF ST. PATRICK'S PARISH. To the Very Rev. Monsignor Carmody, Vicar General of the Archdiocese of Halifax, N. S. Very Reverend and Dear Monsignor, Obedient to the Fentiments of gratitude to Almighty God that animate us to-day, we, the people of St. Pat- rick's Parish, gladly avail ourselves of this joyous occasion, to offer to you the sincere homage of our respect, to assure you of our unchanging love, while adding our humble but heart-felt felicitations .-> the many that you will receive on this the Golden Jubilee of your , Priesthood. As a young Priest, filled with holy zeal, you have ascended the hill, successfully surmounting the many crosses and trials incident to a life spent in most of the scattered and laborious missions of the Archdiocese, during the past fifty years, and are now descending into the valley, a valley lighted by the undying lamp of the faithfulness, fond love, and tender devotion of those amongst whom you have labored so well. You have indeed reached the golden age of maturity. Time has sown fresh and fruitful seeds of affection in your dear old heart, time has, indeed, whitened the locks of your venerable head, yet time has but mellowed in the woll- beloved Monsignor of to-day, the faithful soul and loving heart of the zealous young Priest of fifty years ago. In congratulating you to-day, Very Rev Monsignor, permit us to offer you this golden chalice and paten with the accompanying cruets, a gift, of its own intrinsic value, inade(iuate to the occasion, but rich in the sincere respect, gratitude and love of your parishioners. Tlease accept it, and with it our united hopes, that Almighty God may spare you for many years to come, to use it for His greater honor and glory, and the good of this parish. May your bark still continue to sail upon a golden sea ; and when the Master sees fit to sever the golden links that bind us, may it be to hear his loving words, '' Well done thou good and faithful servant, because thou hast been faithful in a few things I will place thee over many, enter into the joy of the Lord.''
