McGibbon, Q. C. - Percy C. Ryan, B.A., B.C.L. H REPORT OF THE SEASON 1894»95. rriHE third year of our club life is drawing to a close, I aud a brief rctrosi)ect of our aii'airs is necessary. The "* general condition of the club is highly satisfictory, many new members having been added, bringing our complete membership up to 91. We regret to record the loss, by death, of one of our most valued members, the late Mrs. C. T. Williams. The Treasurer's report shows us a balance on the right side of $87.69. We have held tifteen regular meetings during the year, eight business meetings aud seven for the discussion of papers. Our regular programme was slightly altered, the paper on " Physiology " and the paper on " Music " not being given, but for the latter a very ai)ie and charm- ing pnper on "Emerson" was substituted. It is undesir- able that the printed programmes should be in any way disturbed, but the circumstances were unusual ; and whilst ranch regret was felt at the club not hearing these papers, yet the postponement was unavoiJabla. As will be seen from the reports of departments the subjects discussed were all important, and the discussions were carried on with much spirit. There is a tendency, however, to choose subjects too technical or abstract for the average woman. It should bu remembered in arranging the programme that these papers are not to be read to a body of special- 6 ists. The wider cultiiro of the day has certainly fitted women to take a very general grasp of a large range of subjects ; but it should be remembered that we ara women of varied tastes and talents, in fact wo are not specialists ; and whilst the function of a club should not bo mere entertainment of its members, yet there are many subjects interesting in themselves and doubly interesting to us as women that would reach every member because in some relation to her own work in life. This, too, might be done without in any way lowering the ideal of the Club, and the result would be to increase the interest of each mem- ber, make discussion more general and intensify the esprit de corps that undoubtedly is a feature of our organization. Apart from the regular programme of work, lecturt).s wore delivered on the following subjects : " Malformation of the Pelvis and the Spine," by Dr. James Chalmers Cameron, at which her E.\.cellency the Countess of Aber- deen presided, and to show the importance she attached to the subject brought her daughter. Lady Marjorie Gordon ; " The Bread and Butter of the Nation " was given by Mr. J. A. Eobertson, Dairy Commissioner for the Dominion of Canada, a literary lecture on " Shelley," by Mr. Walter Townsend, and one by the Eev. J. Edgar Hill, on "Human Nature and How to Make the Best of it." These lectures were of the most valuable and interesting character, and, treating as they did, the three sides of our nature : the physical, mental and moral, were a fair exponent of the scope of the work attempted by the Club. The practical work of the Club has not as yet brought forth a great result, the best fruit ripens slowly. The study classes grappled with two very difficult authors this year, Emerson and Browning, but the difficulties encoun- tered have but whetted the appetite, and, like Oliver Twist, we are calling for " more." • All excellent plan (arranged by the Home and Educa- tion Department) to introduce cooking into the public schools, has been rendered unnecessary by the sudden determination of the School Commissioners to establish a course in their new school, the Aberdeen. May all our plans for work find as speedy a realization. The petition presented to the School of Art and Design has really accomplished its object, the Council having resolved to establish classes for women, but as yet are undecided between classes in domestic science and those in applied design. However, the Council has asked for a report on the subject before making a final decision, and it is hoped that the importance of the latter work will be influential in opening the art classes to women. It sliiuld be grati- fying to the members to know that the advice and co- operation of this Club were invited nc alone in th' matter of a:K t ging these classes for women, but al > m regard to the approaching International Expositiou, to take charge of the Women's Department. A decision has not yet been reached as to the desirability of undertaking such a re- sponsibility. The social side of our nature has not been forgotten, three very successful teas having been given during the year. The Club members are indebted to the President for the opportunity of meeting the distinguished lecturers, Mrs. Mountford and Miss Mary Proctor, daughter of the as- tronomer, Richard Proctor, and the study class through the kindness of Mrs. Reid and the Alumnae of McGillhad a charming afternoon with the Rev. W. S. Barnes discuss- ing Browning's poem " Old Pictures in Florence." We are indebted to many ladies outside and inside the Club circle for music at our monthly meetings — music too which was of a high type, and added much to the afternoon'^ enjoyment. i 8 The prosperity of the year has been fitly crowned by the gracious acceptance of the Honorary Presidency by Her Excellency the Countess ».f Aberdeen, who has on many occasions shown her warm interest in the Club and her sympathy with the work we are banded together to do. With an Honorary President known through the wide world and regarded as the noblest type of woman- hood of the present day; with a President whose zeal, capability, and devotion to the highest interests of the Club cannot be equalled, much less surpassed ; with mem- bers whose enthusiasm is as conspicuous as their ability, we can look forward with confidence to a year of greater prosperity than even those since the year 1892, each of which has been more successful than its predecessor. Respectfully submitted, Marguerita Macnaughton, Recording Secretary. R ■ 7 n d e 1- 1, a i- r f oSqdo&sS-^^cS?^ ^o ?^ 00 OQ -t-a H a? H i-MOJXOt-aJOsiM So o o 1^.
