GENTLEMEN, We boy to request your kind co-operation in pro.uoting the Centennial Celebration of the First Settlement of Upper Canada by the United Etnpire Loyalists, which it is proposed to hold in the n.onth of June next. In doing so, it is only right to inforn. the public of the n.armer in which the scheme originated. When it was decided to hold a Celebration of the Senu-Centennial of the Incor- poration of^the City of Toronto, Dr. Wn.. Canniff, who as the author of the " History of the Settlen.ent of Upper Canada" has given n.ore attention to this subject than probably any other person, and who is himself of U. E. Loyalist descent, ,nade the suggestion that, as the Centennial ok the Founding OF THE Province fell, also, in the year 1884, a Celebration ok that Event might be combined with the Semi-Centennial of the chief City of the Province. That suggestion was adopted, and the Com- ,nittee of Management of the Semi-Centennial set apart one day of the Celebration week-Thursday, the 19th of June-for such Centennial Anniversary; and Dr. CaunifF was requested to take the initiative in promoting the U. E. Loyalist Celebration. A Local Committee was formed, and several preliminary meetings wire held. As it is earnestly desired that this Celebration shall not be a local but a Provincial movement, the tirst step taken was to invite, by correspondence and through the Press, the co-operation of the difterent Municipalities of the Province, and of all patriotic Ontario Canadians, and, especially, the descemlants of U. E. Loyalists in all parts of the country-the term U. E. Loyalists being intended to en.brace all who came to Upper Canada in consequence of the political troubles attending the Revolutionary War, whether their names were on the Official " U. E. List " or not. It cannot be too stronply affirmed that this celebration is (le.sif:fne(l to be a patriotic tribute to the heroism and fidelity of our U. E. Loyalist Forefathers, witliout pronouncing jud<^ment on the political issues which divided the British American Colonies a hundred years ago. The descendants of the U. E. Loyalists are to-day divided between the political parties of the country, and it is confidently anticipated that a generous tribute shall he paid to our common ancestry, without reference to party lines or political opinions. The hearty co-operation of the Press of the country is deemed indispensable in calling the attention of the public to the claims of the Founders of Upper Canada to such recognition. It is also considered highly desirable that Local Committees should be formed in as many places as possible, to arrange for taking part in the proposed Celebration. For this purpose this Circular is sent to the Provincial Press, to County and Township, Municipal OflScers, and to other leading gentlemen, as the persons who can most readily bring the subject before their respective communities through existing organizations or otherwise. Where there are any prominent de,scendant3 of the U. E. Loyalist stock, in the various communities of the Province, it is especially desirable that this Centennial Movement be favoured with their active co-operation. Immediate action .should be taken, as no time is to be lost if the Celebi'ation is to be worthy of the occasion, and of the heroic men and women whose memory it is designed to honour. The descendants of the Mohawk Indians who accompanied the U. E Loyalist settlers, and took possession of the lands reserved for them on the Bay of Quinte and the Grand River, it is full}' expected, will take an active part in the celebration. A meeting of all interested in this subject will be held in the City Hall, Toronto, on the evening of Tuesday, February 19th, at 8 o'clock, when it is specially requested that local Committees throughout the Province should be represented by deputations, or that they should report organization and make sugsrestions bv written communications. It is desired to form a large and influential Permanent Committee, representing diflferent localities and different phases of public opinion ; such Committee to be appointed by open nomination and open vote of those present. The pro-tempore Committee does not presume to make any .suggestion as to the mode of the Celebration, leaving that to the consideration and decision of the Public Meeting hereby convened. The i'()ll(nvinj:» named gentlemen have expressed, l»y their presence at the preliniinary meetings or liy written or verbal conununications, their sympathy with this movement, and their purpose to co-operate in carrying ic to a successful issue : — His Honour Lieutenant-Governor Robinson.
