 and Regulations : — 
 
 SECTION I. 
 
 GENERAL LAWS. 
 
 1. — ^Thc object of the Society shall be, the Mutual 
 
 Improvement of the Members by debating of Ques- 
 
 ' tious, reading of Essays, Conversations on useful topics, 
 
 and by a Magazine to be contributed to by the members. 
 
 2. — ^The Society shall hold lyeekly Meetings in the 
 basement of Gould Street U. P. Church, on Monday 
 evenings at 7.30, commencing on the first 3Iouday of 
 October, and ending with March. 
 
 3.— No alteration in the Laws shall be made, except 
 at the second meeting of the Session, \rhich shall be 
 the Annual General Meeting, and that with the con- 
 sent of two-thirds of the members present, and notice 
 of such alteration shall be given at the preceding 
 meeting.

 4.— All Papers read before the Society iImII be con- 
 sidered the property of the Society. 
 
 SECTION n. 
 
 MEMBERS. 
 
 The Society shall coosist of Ordinary, Honorary, and 
 Corrf'spondiug Members. 
 
 I. — Otdinarif Mcmben. 
 
 1. — Any pcrscn desirous of becoming a member 
 shall bo proposed by a viltt«;n recommendation, signed 
 by a member, and read in open meeting. 
 
 2. — ^Tho election 3hal! take place at the Meeting 
 foUowing such recommendation. 
 
 8.— Every ordinary member shall, before taking any 
 part in the business of the Society, subscribe to the 
 Laws^ and pay an admission fee of fifty cents, and after- 
 wards suclt further sum as may be imposed by the vote 
 of an ordinary meeting. 
 
 4.— No ordinary member ^hall be entitled to vote or 
 take part in the business of the Society while any such 
 c3tttribution remains unpaid. 
 
 II. — HoTftorary Memberif. 
 5. — Honorary Members shall be such persons as may 
 be thought deserving of the honour by the Society. 
 
 6. — Honorary Members shall be proposed by a written 
 motion signed by two members, handed to the Secretr.y, 
 and read by him at two separate Meetings previous to

 the Meeting for election, and shall be elec*od by A

 9. — Honorary Mcmoors shall bo entitled to all the 
 privilcgss of the Society but shall be exempt froai all

 III.— Corresp'^ndlng Mem hers. 
 8. — Corresponding Members shall be pcrso'jj resident 
 out of Toronto, who are desirous of contributing to the 
 objects, of the Society, and shal'. be elected in the same 
 manner and enjoy the same privileges as Honorary 
 Members. 
 
 SECTION III. 
 
 OFFICE BEARERS. 
 1. — The office bearers shall be elected by the majority 
 p/esent at the Annual General Meeting. 
 
 2. — Any o5ice bearer absenting himself for three 
 consecutive meetings, without a sufficient reason, shall 
 vacate his office. 
 
 1 — The Presuhnt. 
 
 3. — It shall be the duty of the President to preside 
 over all meetings of the society at which he is present, 
 and to preserve order, and the decision of the Chair 
 on questions of order, shall be final.

 III.— The Secretary. 
 
 5. — The Secretary shall keep an accurate list of all 
 the members and obtain their signature^, to the laws, in 
 a copy kept by himself, in which he shall also insert 
 all alterations which may from time to time be made 
 in the laws of the Society. 
 
 6. — He shall make minutes of the business of the 
 Society in a separate book. 
 
 7. — He shall, at tlie Annual General Meeting, 
 furnish to the Society a statcnieut of the aflfai/s, certi- 
 fied by the Committee of Management. 
 
 IV.—Thc Treasurer. 
 
 8. — The Treasurer shall collect the admission fees 
 and other contributions, and shall be responsible for 
 the same, when so collected. 
 
 9. — He shall keep regular accounts and minutes of 
 all his transactions in reference to the affairs of the 
 Society. 
 
 10. — He shall at the Annual General Meeting, 
 furnish to the Society a statement of its financial afiairs, 
 certified by the Committee of Management. 
 
 il- — If one I\Iember fill both the offices of Secretary 
 and Treasurer, all the articles in this and the proceed- 
 ing sub-section shall apply to such member.

 MUTUAL IMrROVKMENT SOCIETY. 
 
 y.— The Editor. 
 12.— The Editor shall read at every fourth meeting, 
 all papers contributed for insertion in the Magazine, 
 and if approved of by the Society, squall stitch the same 
 together and preserve them. 
 
 VI. — Committee of Manayement. 
 
 13. — The Committee of Management shall consist of 
 five Members, (President and Secretary included,) of 
 whom three shall form a quorum. 
 
 14. — They shall disburse the funds and make all 
 necessary arrangements for the ordinary Annual or 
 other Meetings, and generally manage the affairs of tho 
 Society. 
 
 SECTION IV. 
 
 MEETINOS. 
 
 1.— Meetings shall be Ordinary, Monthly, Annual 
 1 or Special. 
 
 2. All Meetings shall be opened and closed with 
 
 Prayer.

 3. — The business of an Ordinary Meeting shall pro-

 4. — Every fourth Electing shall be called Monthly^ 
 at which the order of business shall be the same as at 
 an Ordinary Meeting, but the readiu^' of articles in- 
 tended for the Magazine .«shall be substituted for the 
 Essay or debate. 
 
 5 — The last i\Ionthly Mooting of the Session shall 
 be a Soc'ul Meeting, when Addresses shall be delivered 
 by Members and others chosen by the Committee of 
 Management, but the preliminary business of Ordinary 
 Meetinc:s shall not be transacted. 
 
 III. — Annual General Meeting. 
 
 C. — At the Annual Meeting, Reports shall be laid on 
 the table, office bearers elected, proposed changes in 
 the Constitution considered, and any other special busi-

 2. — The following motions shall oc in order at any 
 time or at any meeting : — 
 
 a. — To adjourn the Meeting. 
 
 I, — To postpone the J)ebate or IMscussion. 
 
 3, — Every motion, before being put to the n)te, shall 
 be handed to the .Secretary in writing, with the names 
 of the mover and seconder. 
 
 4. — In case of an e(|uality of votes m any question 
 before the Society, the Chairman, presiding, shall have 
 the casting vote. 
 
 5.__Xo Essayist shall occupy more 4han twenty min- 
 utes in reading his Ess:iy. 
 
 6. — Xo Debater shall speak longer than iifteen min- 
 utes, noi shall a reply occupy more than five minutes. 
 
 7. — No Mcuiber shall speak twice during the same 
 debate, c.Kcopt the leader on the athnr.ativc, who shall 
 have liberty to reply, after the other Debaters liave 
 spoken. 
 
 8. — The question debated shall, after a sumnnng up 
 of the merits by the t'hairni:in, be decided Ly the 
 majority of the Members present.
