Winter evenings are seasons for domestic comfort, mental appl|« cation, aud'sociality. They are delightful periods of time. The mind participates in the little comforts the body feels. These evenings should be the means of great and permanent good to the young. They should not be frittered away in listless idleness, accumulating nothing, but squandering itiestimable treasure. Visit your barn with as much punctuality as the sun comes to the me- ridian. Morning, noon and night your four fooled dependents, the sour- ces of your wealth as well as the objects of your bounty, should be fed iind looked after, with as much solicitude as if they composed a part of vour fainily — cattle well wintered are half summered. His Excellency John Frost, with his in- ! visible puiverizeis, will in case of fall ploughing, perform wonders as {regards subduing a hard and rough soil. But if your land is naturally light and loose, it will be injured by fall ploughing. Freezings and thaw- ings destroy the little adlpsiveness, belonging to a light loam, and its most fertilizing particles i^ill be given to the winds and waters which wait on winter. It is not uncommon in April, for influenza to prevail : other diseases, top, are frequent. Now if you have any disease, and think it necefHiary| to lutve medical aid, go to a regular physician, who has knowledge aadl experience ;, and not to some quack. who has neither. Even as early as November he seems already im- patient to begin his sway. If you leave a door ajar, he slam^ it wide open and comes puffing in, and blows the newspaper into the fire, over- sets the clothes-horse, and cuts sundry other capers of the sort. He takes advantage of every still night to steal into the garden and pinch off the heads of the flowers. He mounts every black cloud, and from it sendat down a flurry of sleet, hail or snow, he clutches the reigns of govern- ment, and in a few dayb " congeals every brook." In many places it will be very good husbandry to rake up all th.; leaves of trees, and the mould which has been produced by their decay, which can be procured at a reasonable expense, and cart and spread them in your barn yard to absorb the liquid manure from cattle. A warm fire, with warm hearts around it, makes a paradise even in winter. Improve these long winter evenings in the acquisition of useful and en-i tertainingknowle^e, and convert your fireside into a little academy, ■your children being the pupiW and their parents the preceptors. An un- cultivated intellect is much more to be dreaded and deprecated than a barren or badly managed soil ; and you may sow the seeds of knowledge jand bring the fruits of virtue to maturity, as well at this time as in the sommer season. When you hear the wind howling around the house , and see the frost on the windows think of the poor. If you hear of any person! s^aflfering for want of food or fuel, go and see theyare made comfortaWe— your own heart will feel a secret joy, andGod will approve of your conduct. jb^jk^ i- Tl Mean the oth| Noon, tion of I Noon t| or the Where I result i o«tinie is I ^ to the CO M to ,_ ^ N— CO CO 09 lU CO to CA 4» 1*^ -^ ^-'-1 rfk 1^ w CO M)0 ( t« bS y^ i^ CO •u en O) )»>■ t« 0)0 0) 1^ Oi or o o c 1-^ 09 C w c CO t>» •J SO Winter. 32m. ni. n. w.i . 30in. e ve, n ^ ,> High >uth.|pl EQUATION TABLE. 183 9. The Equation of TVme is the difference between Apparent and Mean Time, and therefore serves for the conversion of either time into the other. The numbers here given, show for Greenwich Apparent Noon, the distance of the Mean Sun, from the Meridian, or the por- tion of time to be added to, or subtracted from, Greenwich Apparent Noon to obtain the corresponding Mean Time at the same Meridian, or the time which ought to be shown by the Mean Time Clock. — Where time is deduced from observations of the Sun, the immediate result is apparent time; to convert it into mean time, the equation of ^o«time is necessary, and it is to be applied to apparent time, according to the precept at the head of the column. »-©CCQ0»lOlCJ« ~ edtO"'o;ooDo eo lo .- o tc cc «j cs m i^ «0 «5 (9 OD 00 CK> ^" •!
