At tlio >(tuiii-\\\«stei-ii iMid <>t tho L'xcavation is soon a vein of rry.stalliiie llewli-i'uluiirod Culcito, holding crystals of Mica ami of puio green Apatite. Its altitude is nearly ver- tical am! its tliicUnoss 8 fc»'t. In a large part of this thick- ness tho Apatite is diual to al'ont one-half of tho mass, and amounts probaMy to about one-third of Ihe whole. At about 1(1 ynrds to tho north-eastward tho above vein is seen to be abruptly cut otf, apparently by a fault, and boyond this there apjioars on tiic .^anie line of strike, four parallel veins of Apatite Irnvcrsing a hoi'nblondic gneiss and oocupyiiig a breadth of about 8 feet. Their aggregate thickn('>s amounts to about '.i^ feot of pure crystalline Apatite. Beyond this place for about 80 paces tho vein lias been e.\ posed at intervals and shows portions with calcareous voin-stone holding Ajiatite, and other portions containing Apatite alone. In some jilaces it lias been much affected by the coiuortioiis and faults of the enclosing bods, but pro- serves its rich iios.-h ; and tinally, about lUO paces from the place of beginning it bends suddeuly to tho north-west, its strike being x\. 30 ' W.. and at the same time increases in volume, attaining, >it the spot where it lias been last observed, a thickness of 1 1 feet of nearly pure Apatite. At this jdai^e the ground descends and the vein has not been traced further; but there are iiidirations that it returns to its original strike, mid extends to tho north-eastward, while to tlie south-east ther* ;iro also indications of its extension to Home distance, but no opeuing.s liave been made to test it! cpiality. About l^i» tons of very pure green Apatite have been taken out tif the openings made to prove this vein. Tliis does not include tlio crystals imbedded in the calcare..us voin-stona, a large proportion of which might be dressed to a high ].erceiituge by hand picking.
